Great stuff putting this on, I never got to see it. 80s were great. Sportsnight, midweek sport special, grandstand AND Sunday morning specials from the States on ITV, great days. More 80s British boxing please 👍👍

This fight was in the 1970’s, not the 1980’s.

Wonderful Fight When Boxing was Boxing....Harry Carpenter the Best in the Business and a Great Ref Harry Gibbs...Marvellous
@stuartjohnson7967 Жыл бұрын
You talk complete nonsense. Carpenter didn’t have a clue, and Gibbs was bought in the Cooper-Bugner fight, and the same applied in this fight as well.

@@stuartjohnson7967I think you're right. Carpenter often got things completely wrong.

@@michaelb2388 I think he was just very biased towards British fighters and never told the true story of how the fight was evolving. I am ashamed to let you know, I asked and got his autograph at the A.B.A semi-finals roundabout 1978/79 when I was about 12/13. Ahh well ya live and learn - hindsight…!

Green should never have beaten Stracey, but the fact is, that Stracey, like so many British boxers of the era, had too many fights in too short a time.

That`s not right. He had a 9 month gap before this fight.

Proper boxing. Green worked on a carrot farm in the the fens. Tough old school job.

Holy f#%k I don’t remember Green being as wild as this

Good stoppage decision from Gibb.

Green was wide open to the uppercut and Stracey never threw it.

This was John's comeback fight after losing the world title the year before and he'd also had a fall out with his manager, it didn't work out for him, no disrespect to Dave Green who gave it his all
@robinhammerton15633 жыл бұрын
Years later Harry Carpenter picked this as his favourite fight. Green was too good for Stracey but not for Sugar Ray !
@Telcontar19622 жыл бұрын
Is that surprising? Great fight but very limited boxers. Footwork was virtually non-existent from either fighter and Green was so predictable as to be almost robotic. A less static boxer would have handled Green no problem. Unfortunately Stracey was a very static boxer. Its why Green was able to soften him up with his head early on. SRL just took that head clean off.

There is no way in a million years Green should have been matched with Leonard.

This fight reminds me of the TONY SIBSON ALAN MINTER fight that took place in this same ring years later, when you had another young upstart ((Sibson) taking on the older, former world champion Minter. Both Green and Sibson would go on to receive several opportunities to fight for the world title, but unlike their predecessors, they never won it.

Green came at the wrong time. Massive heart. Would have been Light Welter world champ had the title holders not avoided him. Palamino and Leonard were just too good for him.

Terrible refereeing by Gibb in this fight unfortunately! Letting Green get away with the ridiculously constant use of the head was appalling!

He did not, Harry Carpenter, was a great commentator

I'll second that my good man 💯👍 unlike the dross we have now commentating on championship boxing that sound like they know SFA about boxing & quite often f****** don't!!!!🤔🤨🧐🙄😠😡

I liked both fighters very much if strachey had been a harder puncher would have been a comfortable winner.

Stracey had a great KO ratio 👍🏽

Green was the golden boy of boxing, and a dirty so’N’so. Stracey never stood a chance of winning this fight. Green got his comeuppance against the great Carlos Palomino next fight. Jurgen Hansen and Sugar Ray sparked⚡️ him as well. If John H. had both his eyes, I reckon he would of won.
