I've been shooting on and off (mostly off) since I was 5 years old or so (38 now). I've never shot a bow with sights (I did get a Robin Hood Jr. Compound bow when i was 15 or so but quickly took the sights off). Every time I try to aim or think too much about the shot, it goes completely out of the window. I see a lot of videos these days from people like The Push Archery and Clay Hayes who went from instinctive to aimed shooting. Maybe one day I will convert, but overall I feel like the less I think about my shot, the less I hesitate, the more I feel my shot, all of those things combined, that is what makes archery fun and fulfilling for me. Again, maybe one day I will give up in defeat but I still believe that this is archery in it's purest form.

Thanks for all the work you and your family do in inspiring old, new, and future archers. I appreciate the advise. I've been trying to get my 17yr old son to pick up my 35lb Samick and can't seem to get him "in to" flinging arrows at targets yet. Any kind of sport "games" you can suggest?? (i.e. Basketball "21" / 1 on 1 / horse) Maybe score based approaches will fuel the fire. Thanks

hey Jeff I posted a question about knocking points on your last video, and you asked me to elaborate, what I was really asking was as a beginner will installing my knocking point with just a bow square be OK, or is there more I should consider when installing a nocking point loint.
@JeffKavanagh8 жыл бұрын
+William Stanway Hi William. I find that as a general rule the nock point will end up being anywhere from 1/8" to 3/8" higher than square on a bow. That is usually where I will start when i set a nock. I will usually nock an arrow on the string from underneath as well. Once you start to shoot it is easy to see if the nock place is close or not by your arrow flight. If the arrow starts to "porpoise" in flight then you will know it needs slight adjustment.
@Williamstanway8 жыл бұрын
+Jeff Kavanagh cheers Jeff, I think the point is to try and experiment a little .
@JeffKavanagh8 жыл бұрын
+William Stanway that's exactly correct. The nock point can be different with every bow and every shooter. It just takes a bit of playing to get it right.

Have you tried to have the arrow resting on your thumb i.e. on the right side of the bow This require a riser with no shelf

I love the vids with both of you in them although it must take 3 times as long to make them do to all the laughter! But love the vids for sure! Any ideas on how to take the limb twist out of my Shakespeare? Some one left it strung up in a hot car this summer.
@JeffKavanagh8 жыл бұрын
+MIshooter This video was one take actually. We just have fun together all the time. I am very lucky that I get along like this with both of my kids. A good way to take a twist out of a limb is by heating up a towel with hot water and using the towel to slowly warm the limb and then carefully twisting it back into place.

Ha Ha Ha, awesome . love the relationship you have with your kids,,, ( and she's going to kid your ass if you don't move that light out of her eyes, I know because I've seen that look in my daughters eye,, and then she kidded my ass) Love the idea finding the feel of what's right and wrong with your shot. The samurai used a similar idea, inthat, they would shoot at a target that wasn't much more than an arrow's length away taking away the distraction of aiming. Practice the form and learn the feeling of the correct form. Another great vid thank you.

Just wondering if you don't worry about the cock feather when shooting in the dark...the one that orientates the arrow on the string? Normally it is a different colour. Regards, l shoot traditional style ...Bear recurves,and have appreciated your lessons Jeff.. regards from Australia.❤❤@@JeffKavanagh

Hi Jeff, I've been shooting for a few years very similar to how you and your daughter shoot. A lot of people tell me my form is bad though because I'm shooting split finger, and I "swing" my shot meaning I start drawing the bow as I bring my bow arm up, (noticed you and your daughter both do this too) As well as many people feel that a shooting glove is inferior to a tab. What is your opinion on this?
@JeffKavanagh8 жыл бұрын
+Heidi Hinnershitz My thoughts on a shooting glove? Well Howard Hill, Fred Bear, John Schultz, Byron Ferguson, Ron LaClair, Glen St. Charles, (i could go on) all used or use a glove when shooting. I think we are in good company and not really something which can even be disputed. Also I'd like to see any of the people arguing against a "push/pull" or "J stroke" method that we use to draw hit a bird in flight or a moving target of any kind with the pre-draw method of drawing they use. Not going to happen.
@heidihinnershitz72198 жыл бұрын
Thank you Jeff, you bring up some very good points! I agree it's much more natural to swing shoot when you're hunting, starting with the bow arm fully extended then drawing is just not fluid or natural. I've been watching your videos for a few months now, I really appreciate you taking the time to provide these instructional videos and for answering everyone's questions 😊! Your kids are very lucky to have a dad that shoots and hunts, I sure wish mine did! Thanks again and good shooting!

I just have a question. lately I have been shooting a bit to the left. Is that a problem with my form or is it something else? Oh and that end part scared me half to death. Great video too.
@JeffKavanagh8 жыл бұрын
+Jacob x that could be a result of a few different things. it is really difficult to diagnose with out actually seeing you shoot. It is a common symptom of many different possibilities. It could be arrow spine, how your gripping the bow, frame alignment, etc.
@jacobteel30508 жыл бұрын
Okay. Thank you. I will look into those things and see if any one of those will help me. I will also try the blind target shooting and see if I can find my problem that way. And thanks again.
@Gamerdude5358 жыл бұрын
+Jacob x If your form is all well and good and you're shooting right handed then your arrows are a bit too stiff. Try heavier arrowheads. if you shoot left hand it'll be the opposite and the arrow is a little too flexible iirc
@jacobteel30508 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for the tip. I will try it as soon as I get the time to get heavier tips.

Why split finger? All the guys at my range shoot 3 under.
@JeffKavanagh8 жыл бұрын
+Snafu Snafuedem I have always shot split finger. I like it because I like to have a good "feel" of the nock and it works better for all of the wing shooting I do. I can find the nock much faster than if I shot three under. It's the same reasons I much prefer a glove over a tab. I am in good company though with Howard Hill, Fred Bear, John Schultz, Ron LaClair, Byron Ferguson, etc.
@TheClimbhard8 жыл бұрын
+Jeff Kavanagh Which glove do you recommend? I've always shoot tabs but I'd like to try out the glove to see the difference. Thanks!
