I am glad you mentioned the grip. I picked up a used Montana, and customized it with auto body filler because the grip was not good at all. Now it's like the AuSable grip. You might enjoy the Montana more if you try the same. I just taped off the riser above and below so that I wouldn't make a mess and then sanded it down to perfection. I used the grip on my Shakespeare Yukon as a template. I covered it with a homemade bullhide grip afterwards. It feels great in the hand and the performance is not affected at all. BTW I still use my old 31# Shakespeare Yukon to work on my form. :) Bet wishes to you and the family!

Jeff, I had the Ausable for a long time, and it was a fantastic bow. The noise was one thing that bugged me though. I was able to make it dead silent by making my own yarn silencers for it. The trick is to have 2 sets. one at 10" the other at 14" - Instead of making a silencer that weighs 25-30 grains for one, I split them up to weigh around 12 grains a piece. After I did this the bow didn't make a sound even with a 8 gpp arrow. It also doesn't lose anymore performance by adding two heavy silencers. just thought I'd pass it along since you like a quiet bow for hunting :)
@JeffKavanagh9 жыл бұрын

I took my new Bear Authority compound down to the local shop yesterday to get some help with the setup. Among the things we talked about over the course of it was strings. He said he's not impressed with any of the strings manufacturers put on their bows, compound or traditional. A year or so is about all you can expect from an OEM string. In the case of my two trad bows, it was weeks.

1, great chemistry between you two, always positive! Refreshing in this political climate! Thanks! 2, knowing what a Tribble is...!? Wow! 3, 50lb!? That's serious control! Very impressive. 4, have you consider "ruining" her by having her compete in Olympic style shooting. I'm not sure if instinctive and Olympic style will conflict or compliment (I use Olympic style with sights, rods, different limbs etc. I do own a 50lb wood recurve, no sights & stable rod, to change up my practice routine). Lastly, great vids, looking forward to see more.

Big Beary ( in Australia ) Love your clips, great chemistry and obviously inspiring shooting by you both. I'm not sure if you guys still read these comments...or hopefully reply to them?? A year ago....I was adamant about getting a mid-weight Bear Recurve, but at 6'3" and with about a 30.5" draw, I was worried about stacking and possibly even compromising any of the ( one piece ) Bear models. This clip made me swap my choice to the longer ( 64" ) AuSable Long-bow....Jeff's words..."there is no hand-shock, at all" are now ringing in my ears. I had to pay up front and wait 11 months for my 45lb bow ( about 50 for me ) In the shop it felt way powerful and I guess all the shop distractions made me miss the noise and yes...hand-shock. It has the D97 Flemish Twist string ( as supplied ) and I set the brace height at 7.5" ( as suggested ) Initially I was firing the arrows I had plenty of ( 400 spine, 32" ) and these were predictably way too light. I then played around with a heavier field tip ( up from 100gn to 125gn ) and then fitted a full length of heavy line-trimmer cord...thus making a reasonably balanced 600 grain arrow ( or about 12grains per pound ) STILL the bow is heavy on the shock....I think it may go better with an even heavier arrow?? Also, I think the bow's extreme light weight means that there's no mass to absorb the huge forces. I have reduced the brace height a bit and that appeared to work a little...I'll keep dropping it down in increments towards the minimum suggested ( 7" I think ) Other than that, I'll try a padded glove in my left ( Bow ) hand and see if that helps. I saw one suggestion by "Fuzzy Puppy" 7 years ago, about applying TWO sets of string silencers...I will definately try that. Now that I have a 50lb AuSable, I'm even MORE impressed with Lucy's technique and un-canny strength. Any comments about this bow, with a tall shooter would be much appreciated.
@johanfynbo5377 Жыл бұрын
I am also shooting a 45# Bear Ausable. I have the brace height at 7.3". I don't get hand shock often, but it can happen - I think when the release is not clean.
@michaelgow8050 Жыл бұрын
@@johanfynbo5377 Thanks for your comments Johan. I think you're correct about anything other than a good smooth release being punished. I did change back to split-finger ( effectively raising my nocking point ) which helped straight away. The worst thing is my damaged wrist. The best solution came in the form of a retro-fitted RECURVE-type handgrip which I cast out of polymorph and put over the existing handler. This now places my wrist in its strongest possible shape and totally pain-free shooting followed...a huge relief. The retro-fit handle does not interfere with the beautiful ( Bubinga ) riser in any way and is totally removablle. Cheers Mick

hey Jeff... all the way from the UK. Love your videos, I've learnt a lot from them. I was checking out your videos from the past and maybe I missed it but I was looking for information regarding aiming when shooting bare bow. I'm ok when shooting three fingers under as I use the shaft of the arrow as a reference point, however, when I shoot with one over and two under I have no sense of what to use as a reference when aiming. Maybe you could do a video on aiming/sighting your target?
@JeffKavanagh9 жыл бұрын
+T1G3RKN33 I don't aim when i shoot. I shoot instinctively and don;t use the arrow as a reference point at all. What you are describing is Gap shooting and for that please check out Jimmy Blackmon.
