All details (geo, spec, price, availability) about the new Ibis Ripmo V3 are available here: jenson.sjv.io/IbisRipmoJKW. HUGE thanks to Jenson USA for sponsoring this video! Anything purchased from that link, or the following, will help support my channel. Thanks in advance!
I also did a video about the new Ibis Ripley V5! Check out the new Ripley at Jenson USA here: jenson.sjv.io/... And YES, the new Ripmo and Ripley are the SAME carbon bits, just a different shock and rear clevis. However, the ride feel is very different.
Ibis loaned me a complete, Shimano XT equipped Ripmo bike to make this video- yes, I’ll have to return it, and hopefully no time soon! And it’s worth mentioning that Shimano is a proud sponsor of my channel, so thanks to them.
To start the test, I rode the bike 100% stock for a couple rides. Then, it was time to dial it in! The first thing I did was to swap it over from mullet (all size medium and small ship only as mullet) to dual 29. With the stock Ibis Blackbird Send wheels, I upgraded to a set of MaxxGrip, Double Down casing tires from Maxxis. jenson.sjv.io/... and jenson.sjv.io/...
The Ripmo still felt overall small: a little short, and a lot low. To improve this, I swapped on a longer stem, and went a little higher on the bars. I’ll get a much taller set of bars installed soon- likely the Renthal FatBar I bought a while ago: jenson.sjv.io/... in a 42 (wish I had a 50!)
I went to a deeper drop seatpost, as the bike came with a 160mm post, which I found intrusive when sessioning bigger jumps and steeper trails. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of the BikeYoke remote, so I also used a OneUp remote. I did have to slide my saddle forward a bit with the longer seatpost, worsening the feeling of the bike being a little smaller than the prior generation. I used a OneUP dropper jenson.sjv.io/...
With these changes done to the bike, it was time to log our first day filming. This bike was riding well! But the 35mm Blackbird wheels from Ibis tend to be a little challenging to adapt to when it comes to cornering. I had plans to change wheels, but first, noticed a bit of excessive flex in the rear end. I reached out to Ibis, who verified something was actually wrong with my swingarm, and we swapped it for a replacement. We found a small manufacturing defect, and the replacement has been much better. The Ripley I was riding has not developed any issues.
With a new swingarm, I swapped on a set of my beloved Industry Nine Enduro 305 wheels. This improved ride feel, cornering, and hub engagement.
The rear suspension was good, but I was looking for a bit more support. Going up to .7 volume reduction was the first move- this was a big improvement! I still wanted more support, so it was time to head to an aftermarket rear shock. With the new Ibis platform being coil compatible, I reduced a 230mm DHX2 coil shock to a 60mm stroke. jenson.sjv.io/... I look forward to riding this shock a bunch- and it’s currently using a 450# spring.
Next I’m going to put miles in on these Santa Cruz Reserve 30HD wheels, as I do prefer the 30mm inner width rims, and believe it or not, those Reserve wheels are even stiffer than the Industry Nine alloy units. jenson.sjv.io/...
I’m rocking a splendid summertime kit from my supporters at Endura! Check the full kit here at Jenson USA: jenson.sjv.io/...
jenson.sjv.io/...
jenson.sjv.io/...
Head to www.DrinkLMNT.c... to get your free sample pack with any drink mix purchase.

one this I want to say is that bike looks so much better because I didn't like the cruveed top tub and this one looks amazing.

I liked the old look more. But I look at it more in real life than a side profile photo online, and I think a lot of the styling is only appreciated in person. I also much preferred the V2 generation colors over the subdued new tones, but I ride where it's muddy. Around here, brighter, more solid colored bikes look much cleaner after going through the puddles.

@@JeffKendallWeed You nailed it. So many haters look at the bike in online pics and never see it IRL. They also have no intention of buying one but still need to comment on the top tube XD. If you see the v4 ripley/v2 ripmo from a standing angle, they look great.

I prefer the look of my "Bug Zapper" blue V2. I've got many compliments on what a beautiful bike it is . I also like the old frame on what I call that horseshoe component on the upper rear triangle. Makes it so distinct out there on the trail from everything else. I think the new version Ripmo looks like the Yeti SB140, especially the purple.

Jeff: Incredible reviews of both the Ripley and Ripmo .... superb narrative, filming, editing, etc. Not sure how you did both so fast with such excellent quality, but Kudos to you and your team! I also appreciated your comments at the end on the Ripley vs. Ripmo choice you'd make. Given the type riding you do (aggressive, playful, high speed) I was pleasantly surprised you chose the Ripley. At age 77, my choice for sure would be the Ripley. Oh wait, I have the v4 and love it! 😊More than meets my limited skills and makes me smile each time I ride it. Rule #1 is FUN!!

Thanks for watching, and thanks for the note! I love the shapes of the old bike in real life. On the internet, where a sideways profile photo is king, the new bike definitely looks sharper. IRL, the new design is definitely nice, but it's not as unique as the outgoing. I preferred the brighter colors of the older V2 version (bright blue, and light brown, both glossy), but that's just me. I think in 5 years, the old V2 and V1 bikes will look pretty old, where as the new V3 shape will be more current and will hold more staying power.

Thank you for saying the quiet part out loud...same exact frame for Ripley V5 and Ripmo V3 just different linkage parts. Some will think that it's cool to be able to have 2 bikes in 1, but I doubt very many people will switch around between the two configurations and reality is that it's a compromise and cost savings measure by Ibis. Going to be tough to build up a lightweight Ripley with a frame that weighs about 2 pounds more than the V4.

Shadowcat owner here - Nice choice! SB as stock is very supoortive and maybe a little harsh over chatter compared to a horst link bike. But the benefit of having so much support in the linkage (DW) is that you can remove spacers, adjust pressures and so forth to smoothen the chattery stuff while not compromising the traction and midstroke. With a horst link or driven single pivot, you can only do so much. Eventually you'll run out of spacers or gizmos, and you'll ruin the point of having a horst/single pivot - plushness and forgiveness.

I do agree, Santa Cruz, yeti, specialized, ibis needs to stay away from mixed wheels. Also adding additional pivots (29 to 27.5) only adds more areas to fail. This is why I love yeti. No unnecessary pivots! I do not like flex bikes! I love rigid still bikes and do the wheels to flex a bit. So for me ibis again it is a big NO. The spectral fits me great with my 186 cm (6'1"?) and long legs and short torso. Looking at Ibis sizing they suggest a size L for my height but size XM is actually way closer to the geo of my spectral. Size L ripley is like 28mm longer than my 150/160 bike (whaaat?!). In my experience canyon falls actually slightly larger in its sizing compared to other brands. And now I'm confused and don't know what size ripley should I get. @@j-b776 I love my yeti. it has some compliance/flex built into the frame, but it’s very controllable. A lot of people will disagree with me, but I sort of feel like the yeti is the long legged trail bike more so than a light duty Enduro bike/all mountain. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. It definitely still wants to go fast, but it is a very good jumping bike as well. I’m just the type of guy that trades bikes every six months that’s the only reason I’m looking at the next new bright and shiny thing. If you go with the yeti, you’ll love it.

Would also love a comparison to the new stumpy. I own the 23 evo and my son the v2 ripmo, so curious on that comparison. As for in-bike storage, I'll likely never go back to a bike without it. The feeling of riding with nothing on your back is worth the hassle of digging stuff out.

best comment ever on frame storage 😂😂✌

Thought it was just me that dislikes frame storage. Seems like an unnecessary item to fail, rattle and provides minimal utility. I’m glad brands like Yeti hasn’t jumped on this bandwagon yet, but will likely follow suit.

I've never had any issues with rattles on my SC HTv3. I'm able to fit everything I need for a 3hr ride in the frame storage including a micro water filter (I strap a spare tube to my frame to free up internal storage). I love riding without a pack/hip pack on. I felt the same about internal storage until i started to really take advantage of it. It's such a fantastic feature to have on longer travel bikes.

Is there any talk of an alloy frame option for the ripmo?

Jeff, if the medium Ripmo and Ripley are both the same frame and size, why did you need to put a longer stem on one and a shorter stem on the other? Does the change in linkage make that much of a difference in reach? Thanks.

Great question! The riding style changes with the travel. The Ripmo needs to be bigger so you can smash through more obstacles and have enough space to feel confident. The Ripley is a small bike, with less capability, and needs steered around obstacles more.

I took a chance and ordered the V3 a few weeks ago on limited information after I couldn’t get my hands on a V2S. I’m pretty stoked at all of the options to really dial things in. I’ve been wanting to try the DVO JadeX for a while, I’m curious how that would work.

What do you think of the V3 suspension design compared to the V2? Is it more efficient ?

Did you try it on both 29 and 27.5? I just ordered a medium. Can decide what wheel set to use?
