Hats off to JKW for being open about getting a free bike in order to do a review, then proceeding to give real world, balanced feedback, including the negatives. Most Tubers are cagey about the transactions they have with brands, and still sing nothing but endless praise for products they’re sent to review. Being so straightforward gives a lot more weight to your reviews!

Observation: In your i9 test, you landed front wheel first which kind of "whiplashed" the rear down onto the railroad tie. In this test, you landed rear first which allowed the force to be transferred forward and away from the rear wheel. I'm sure an engineer could explain the forces in play a lot better... But I think this contributed to the results. Either wheel is impressive though! I'd love to see a part 3 where you compare an older "standard" rim profile wheel like a DT Swiss EX511 or similar.

Good point Paul, I did three separate track impacts though, can’t believe not a single one of those mangled the rim! It was really surprising.

Keep in mind that a mounted and inflated tire will lower spoke tension. I’ve seen a 10-15 kgf shift from this! Perhaps the I9 spokes are stiffer? Stainless generally has a lower elastic modulus (assuming the I9 spokes are 7000 series Aluminum)

I’ve been using the ibis wheels now for about 3 years(mind you I’m pushing 220lbs also!)have a blkbrd send set now, I love these rims. Having a set laced to i9 hubs this week. Absolutely 0 issues, tacos or serious dings on the S35 now send set. And only 99 for a rim, best deal out there for a rim!

Do you think tightening the spoke tension across the board might kind of bridge the gap in feel on the trail between these and your preferred I9's? I mean obviously it won't be quite the same no matter what, the spokes being aluminum vs. steel. But maybe you could get that more snappy, directly connected, energy efficient feel beck a little by upping the tension to like 100 or 120? I have these on my 2022 Ripmo AF, and without a gauge or anything, i could FEEL that the spoke tension was less the other bikes I've had and it's interesting you could qualify that. Or maybe it's best left alone because that compliance is what keeps them so tough? Maybe any contact with an Ibis engineer you may have could find out?

Currently using these Blackbird wheels on an Ebike and so far so good. If the cheap hubs fail, I do plan to upgrade to some reliable/good DT350’s. I weigh 150lbs and normally run 27-28psi out back on DD tires otherwise I will destroy rims (heavy 55lb Ebike). On the new BB wheels I am running 23psi with just 1 puncture I was able to fix with a tire plug after 900 miles so far.

No, I'm so light on wheels that I rarely have to true them. Once in a while I might come up short on a jump, but when I dented that rim I was trail riding, skipping over some roots and hit one hard enough that I thought the rim would be a little off, but it was buckled. I don't know if they're better now, but the S35's I got in 2020 were super thin.@@TucsonDude

My 2020 Ripmo came with s35 aluminum rims and they flat spotted the first weekend I rode them. I kept riding them for the season before upgrading to carbon rims (LB 933) and I'm super happy with how much stiffer the new wheelset is! It looks like Ibis fixed the biggest problem with their rims and now they are indestructible! Hats off to Ibis. (Not ever giving up my LB rims though)!

On a Ibis spec sheet it says they use Sapim D-light spokes - that is a 1,65 center section. 0.5 is fraction Park Tool doesn't account for,.This means real tension is bit lower. Also you compared inflated tyre spoke tension with bare wheel spoke tension, which is going make a difference of about 15 kg force at this thickness from my experience. If the tool is somewhat calibrated It looks like wheel on the lower end of the tension spectrum No the best for longevity. Also sounds like it affected your impression. Still... i desire Send rims for my own build. Cheers!

I really wonder if you can do all those stunts on an actual ( Ibis Mojo, for example…) carbon fibre bike without truly damaging the frame. Not exactly sure if the same tension on the frame is as it is on a wheel made of what must be as strong as Titanium. I have an 2nd edition mojo from 2007 and still riding and also titanium moots enduro and also an M5 aluminum Specialized fsr elite all of which have been through some intense ( there’s a brand we don’t see much of nowadays…) wear and tear over the years and are super light but I dare not do half the stunts you did any more! My gut tells me it’s not the i9 aluminum spokes that make those wheels feel more “energetic” but rather the i9 hub itself. @@los1379 does it? it would need to measure stress, not tension 🤔. And say it did, the spoked would fall in the elastic part of the stress/strain curve, in which case all you would know is if you were deforming it plastically. Pretty sure its just tension though. What Jeff was doing is not easy, to relate tension to ride feel across materials and geometry, 🤷‍♂ maybe he can bring on an engineer from i9 to explain
