In this video I create an acrylic painting on the backside of a Magic: the Gathering card. However, this is a special M:TG card. It's called an artist proof and is only given to the artists that work on Magic: the Gathering.

You've recently come to be a big inspiration to me. I found you by chance doing an assignment for school here at MIAD which I saw you went to and I love your work. I also started playing Magic recently and by chance I had one of your cards laying around from back when I collected but didn't play. I love your videos and the way you paint so I've begun to get more into traditional painting, and I've been thinking about trying to alter my cards for fun. I can already feel myself improving a lot more.

Nice work as always! Anyway, I got a tip for the tape issue. I work as a decorator/painter in Sweden, and we often "lock in" colors after taping. So, paint some acrylic white at the edge of the tape, let it dry and do the actual painting, and voilà! You get a sharp edge after removing the tape.

@jeffmiracolaartist
@jeffmiracolaartist 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. And no, I don’t ever varnish them. For two reasons. I don’t want to risk the card curling up. And I don’t think the owner would appreciate the varnish smell. I’m used to the smell and it never bothers me, but it can be quite strong to a non-artist. Happy holidays!! 😊
@floydartx
@floydartx 3 жыл бұрын
@@jeffmiracolaartist fair enough :) A good lascaux spray varnish would not curl up the cards as it is what I use on every painting I do on paper. But yeah.. the smell. Luckily a nice plastic sleeve solves all :D

You can use a white ceramic tile as a palette for acrylics and once it’s full just use a window scraper and boom, clean again lol. Saves ya using CD cases if you end up just slinging them. Also, do you not use any varnish through an airbrush to finish it off? Or is it safe to assume that most collectors are going to be putting the card in a case/sleeve so you don’t have to worry about them touching it enough to rub the paint off?

Again, awesome vid. You mention you don't like the paint from tubes as they tend to be too thick. On the other hand you also mention that you thin down your paints with water. Couldn't you thin the tube paint down with water? Or does that dilute the paint too much? Are the soft body paints already premixed with a medium? Sorry for all the questions.

This was amazing!! I’m thinking about painting a deck of cards for one of my friends. I’ll probably use the classic bicycle brand...should I be using a base for the paint? And do I need to use a sealer like mod podge??
@jeffmiracolaartist
@jeffmiracolaartist 4 жыл бұрын
Emma U´Ren I haven’t painted on bicycle brand cards. I think they may be a little more shiny and slick than these Magic: the Gathering cards. So yes, you’d want to put down some kind of base coat first. Either white or clear gesso will do just fine. As for a top coat afterwards, you may not need one. But a spray on varnish would be fine. Like a clear acrylic sealer. Just try to spray that on outdoors as it will have fumes. Also, make sure you do a test or two on cards before doing any final paintings. Because you want to find out if the cards will warp after they dry.
