Makes total sense to me. My process of glazing over the painting multiple times is one of those things where it may take me more steps than painting without glazes, but it allows you to eventually cover more ground so you can spend the time to focus on the details in the end. What a cool video. Im no serious artist, but I do dabble in a bit of scribbling myself. I describe it that way because I’ll never have the steady hand to make anything that doesn’t look like vandalism in a bathroom stall. But i do acknowledge the skill and precision required to execute a well translated piece of art and take it from the mind onto the canvas. Paint is such a strange material to work with, for me at least. The way it needs to be spread and layered…. Really cool to see an image come together that way in real time. I can only really scribble 2D doodles with pens and markers. Im no true artist. What you do, takes so much skill and creativity in terms of depth, layering, colour mixture, and so much more. Again, very cool video.

Hi, Cristina. The files are just .MP4 video files. You can watch them in iTunes or QuickTime player if you're on a Mac or in Windows Media Player if you're on a PC. Jeff, can you do a similar glazing technique using oils? Just really thinning out the paint with a good medium instead of water? I should just go and try it. I would have never thought of doing that until watching this. I have been trying to get the same effect on a few paintings, but I have been doing it the pain in rear way of mixing different shades of paint instead of something like this.

Matthew Eble Hi Matt. Absolutely you can glaze with oils. I do it all the time. It's how the old masters used to work :-) I'm working on an extensive oil painting DVD right now about my entire process and then some. But that won't be out until April. But I also have plenty of videos on my channel that show some of my oil techniques, too.

I love art for these back and forth processes. When i'm sketching digitally i like to quickly get forms and then use the eraser on a low opacity to fade it back and then draw over it repeating the process, and i also adapted this to traditional drawing but instead of dabbing it with an eraser i lightly smudge it with my finger or some paper towel, then repeat the sketching process, and by the end this leaves me with tone that i can erase for highlights. I can't wait to get in more practice with traditional paints cause last time i did, i didn't even know about some of these techniques, it was more about color theory at that time. But yeah, always appreciate seeing an artist's process, thanks for sharing!^-^ Oh! Also, if you haven't seen Wylie Beckert's work before, you should check out her channel. She is pretty dang good with her wash technique :]

Thats good advice to go and just paint. All my life I have only been drawing with a pencil, whatever came to my mind. Because of that I always start by drawing somewhat way too detailed, and then putting paint over it like I'm coloring it in, cannot get over the fear of paining over what i have just drawn and loosing the creation.

Hey Jeff, I love your fantasy paintings, I find them incredibly inspirational. I just had one question, I've been trying for years and years to paint realistic things so that I could eventually do horror/gore graphic novels and surrealist paintings. The only problem is that I find realistic things incredibly boring and takes the fun out of doing art for me, and when things go wrong and I can't make the painting look good, it makes me want to shoot myself. Do you think it's best to just draw fantasy things from the get-go, using references, or start from basic realism? And how do you personally practice drawing, do you study anatomy etc or just play and experiment how you see fit? Sorry if the questions are a bit bleh, but I'm in a weird mood lol.

An artist in a weird mood? How strange ;-) LOL. Don't sweat it. If you find trying to paint or draw a certain way to be boring, then don't do it. Especially if your goal is to create art for graphic novels. You have to be absolutely in love with the style of art you are creating in order to sustain it for the number of pages of art you'll be making. You could be woking on your graphic novel for years. One of the great frustrations of being an artist is having vision, but not the skills at the moment to make that vision happen. I definitely went through this early in my career and still do at times. If your vision for your graphic novel, or art in general, is to be more realistic looking rather than cartoony, then ask yourself if this is the right time to begin your graphic novel project. Maybe it gets put on the back burner until the day your drawing/painting skills have met up with your vision. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. There are lots of paintings I chose not to do because I didn't have the skill at the time. I revisited those painting ideas later, when I finally learned how to paint better, and made successful paintings :-) Some of those ideas finally came to realization 10 years later. That being said, you MUST learn how to draw "boring" things. I do recommend you draw from life if you have the opportunity. Nothing, and I mean nothing, tops drawing the human figure from real life. Go draw animals at the zoo or even taxidermied animals at a public museum. Set up still lifes in your home (vase with flowers, animal skulls, fruits, metal objects, etc.) to draw. Get outside and draw nature, too. Draw those trees, plants, automobiles, buildings, etc. Once you start drawing from life, you'll start to see these things in a whole new light. You think you know what a tree looks like until you sit down to draw it, studying every limb, every imperfection, every leaf. Trust me, the boring stuff won't seem so boring after a while. And drawing the boring stuff will serve you well when you go to make your graphic novel. A graphic novel that is just panel after panel of zombie heads and spilling guts just isn't interesting. All that boring stuff is what will help you set your mood, setting, and give your characters a rich environment to live out your story. I personally practice drawing from life and from imagination. These days time is a factor for me. I only draw from life when I can make the time. But I do still make the time for it. But I find inspiration from other artists' works or from various books. Then I let my imagination fly and just draw. A lot of this is about repetition. The more you draw, the better you get. The more control over your medium you will have. FYI, my imaginative drawing has only been made better because of all my years of drawing the boring, realistic stuff. Check out this video I made a few years ago about figure drawing. Thank you so much for the kind words. My glazes most often consist of just paint diluted with water. However, I also glaze with acrylic glazing liquid (I use Golden brand) added to the paint. In this video I just diluted with water though.

Thanks a lot! I'm going to embrace embarrassing myself and present another question, please. Do you dilute your paint to the same kind of consistency as the gesso, or thicker, for this illustration painting? Do you ever work on paper?

throughout the course of a painting, my paints reach many different levels of consistency depending on the stage I'm at in the painting or what's called for to achieve a certain effect. That holds true for this particular painting. And I rarely do paintings on paper, but I have done it in the past. The few I've done were on gessoed watercolor paper.

Great work Jeff! I have been struggling with acrylic glazing mediums and the grisaille under painting method. I spend a lot of time working the monochromatic value underpainting and it comes out great but I get stuck on the glazing.and end up going back over it with an allaprima approach. Do you use additives such as glazing medium or matte medium for your glazes, or do you just water down the acrylics as a glaze? I have had some success using colored inks but would love to hear about your method. I'm also considering your workshop dvd.

Hi Nick. Sometimes I use just water added to the acrylics, sometimes I use a glazing medium. I only use the glazing medium when I want to either paint large areas and need the paint to stay wet longer so I can get better gradients or if I want the paint to stay wet longer so I can "sculpt" with it. That is, to put the glaze down, but then quickly work back into it with a very opaque color so I can get lots of interesting meaty or buttery textures. It feels very similar to oil painting when I do that. Thanks for enjoying the video.

Do u glaze with a glazing medium or u just add a little water with paint? And glaze like that.

Jeff- I meant to write earlier and say how much I enjoy the acrylic technique DVDs. (I'M OFFICIALLY PIMPING YOUR DVD) I'm so inspired by your work and the awesome quality of your instruction. My wife thought I was losing my mind on this posting of yours. I'm cheering "Yes!, Yes!" every time you apply a new layer of glaze, or when you get to the highlighting. She thought I was watching a sporting event. I joked that I was watching porn-- at least my version of it. :-) That little quip afforded me a spectacular eye-roll from her. Mission accomplished. Also-- will you be considering a DVD of oil-based technique? Thanks for the wonderful work. J
