I'm getting taller at 64 years of age by working my traps and back! A major curve in my neck has completely disappeared in a matter of months, as if it were never there. For 30 years you could've rested a pencil on the ledge my neck offered, and now a shoulder slump is disappearing. I have a HIGH CROSS 4degree scoliosis, and it seems to be responding as well. I avoided back and leg work as I had too many injuries, so I lifted air until I got things working. To learn the squat, I did deep knee bends holding onto a pole. Now I squat with weight to the correct depth. ABS 20-30 minutes FULL BODY (daily variance by heavy or light,) 2hrs lifting CARDIO 30-40 minutes following. I built up to this demand over a 6 month period. Today I get to go heavy, so tomorrow instead of a day off, I will do full body conditioning lifts, high rep.

Conclusion: For the neck, 40-70 reps per session with flexion and extension based exercises (lateral movement optional) up to 3 times per week. For the traps, add 6-10 extra sets of direct isolation work, but keep in mind that other exercises also hit the traps, so be careful to not get carried away with weekly volume.

Just a little anecdotal evidence to add: I've always used an over/under grip on deadlifts and developed highly asymmetric trap development. I didn't put 2 and 2 together until the past year (I previously believed it was because of my sport training from a specific stance). Now I'm trying to retrain my deadlift grips to reverse the odd shaping of my traps (one bulges, the other slopes). For what it's worth. Thank you for sharing!

What’s crazy is people don’t even realize that you can’t even get “jacked” from just taking steroids. You need to actually workout and eat healthy. Yes it enhances your ability to gain muscle and gets you past you natural physical limits, but you still need to put work in to get there. So even if you use steroids, you still can’t be called a fake.

It's helpful to tuck the neck in when performing these movements. If you try it yourself, your neck extended normally or tucked in when you do the exercises, you'll feel the difference. I’ve been having symptoms like neck pain, heavy head, brain fog, tinnitus, and tachycardia. That was 3 months ago, have not been able to lift since. Be EXTREMELY careful when training your neck, you really don’t need to go very heavy with it. Also, if you’re training the back side, a harness is likely your best bet

Your neck looks amazing. Thanks for pointing out how ridiculous EMG activation is; EMG activation of neck during deadlift high, 0 growth of neck after weeks long study of heavy deadlifts. If you want a bigger neck you either A) have to train it directly B) have good genetics for your neck or C) use anabolics which are proven to grow the neck and traps at disproportional rates without training them.

I've had serious results by doing pretty light plate loaded for the front, and neck harness for the back. Looots of reps. But, perhaps in combination of being a little on the heavy side, it resulted in sleep apnea. Luckily that stopped when I stopped training my neck and it shrunk in size. I do have to begin training my neck again though, cause it releaved a bit of neck problems I've had for many years, which often ends in heacaches. And, of course, it looked beastly af ^^

You probably won't see this but hey-ho. I think you may have misunderstood the findings from the first study (Conlan) and the significance of the second study (Navy one) The first study states a MUSCLE cross sectional increase from 19.5cm2 to 22cm2 = 1.5cm2 growth of muscle in CSA (Approximately 12.82% growth in MUSCLE CSA). Assuming an average neck is 15.25 inches circumference (assumed from the navy study), the average TOTAL neck CSA = 119.4cm2. This means the percentage of the neck that is muscle is (19.5/ 119.4 x 100) around 16.3% (makes sense as the neck is filled with bone and other stuff as well as muscle), will use this later) With the increase in CSA from the muscle the average neck would grow from 119.4cm2 to 121.9cm2 , which assuming the neck is roughly circular means a circumference growth of 15.25 inches to 15.41 inches. A growth of neck circumference 0.16 inches over 3 months. The second study states that the circumference grows from 38.8cm to 40.2cm or 15.28inches to 15.83 inches which is equal to a growth of 0.55 inches. Which is far more than the first study which makes sense as the second study trains the neck forward back and side. In fact working out the area increase in this study (from 119.8cm2 to 128.6cm2 = 8.8cm2) equates to a growth of 6.84% Assuming the % of muscle to total neck area worked out previously is approximately correct (16.3%) then the initial muscle CSA in the group was 19.8cm2 and increases to (19.8cm2+8.8cm2) 28.6cm2. This means that the actual muscle growth in this group was 30% over the 3 months (which is actually higher than the splenius (neck extensor) growth in the first group was 25% over 3 months I believe. To put that into perspective, if a 15.5inch arm was to grow at that rate you would gain 1.75 inches in 3 months (conservatively assuming 80% of the CSA of the upper arm is muscle). So the second study actually correlates very well with the first study. If anything the growth is a tad on the high side. What this shows is that the neck muscles do react well to resistance training, shown in both groups. However, the actual amount of muscle in the neck means that the total circumference does not increase that much. So if you want real growth there, it's going to take a lot of time and consistency.

Yeah i can confirm that I train my front and side muscles 5 times a week with a 25kg plate for three sets each side for almost two months now and though my neck looks a lot more muscular now my circumference has barely increased by about 0,9 cm.
