@ylowknfe3 жыл бұрын
I always feel a little weird when that line hits. Frank, insane as he is, might just see a bit more *because* of that insanity. Jeffrey could've left the ear alone, but he took it to the police. He could've stayed away from Sandy, but he used her to gain information regarding the ear, Dorothy, and consequently Frank. He could've stayed away from her apartment, but he went in. He could've bolted when she knew he was in the closet. He could've left at so many crucial moments and absolved himself of all the chaos that would follow, but he didn't. Despite his conscience, Jeffrey enjoys this world he's entered. I think we've all got a little of Frank bottled up inside us, but throughout the course of BV, Jeffrey is letting it out. And for better or worse, he's loving it. Jeffrey desperately wants to let out the id inside him, and Frank knows it. "You're like me."
@jamesoffutt28012 жыл бұрын
@@ylowknfe that's a good point, and the fact that Jeffrey is a voyer paling in comparison to the madness of Frank Booth. This older man has more experience in the world of voyeurism. Great lengths of rape, and to add, extreme licentiousness. As well as the company of three younger men slightly older than Jeffrey, who are just as nuts and perverted as Frank is. I'm sure Jeffrey if he had it in him, he would have hung out with these freaks and got cool with them. Dorothy too, yeah, she's kind of like him too. But they can't handle the sensation of the insane world of Frank Booth and his friends because Booth is a monster. Compared to these two and experienced people.

Yes, Jeffrey on some level has the same kind of depravity and aberrant sexual curiosity that Frank has. I've always seen Blue Velvet as a metaphor for confronting your own darkest desires and repressed evil. At the end, when Jeffrey shoots Frank in the head and kills him he's also symbolically destroying that part of himself. In the final scene, we see that he has regained the innocence and serenity of his old self because he has banished the demon. And he has brought light to the world rather than darkness by finally reuniting Dorothy and her child.

The genius in Hopper's portrayal of Frank Booth is that he is so sick he can almost make you feel sorry for him. His personal trauma does not justify his evil, but he's still a very human villain as monstrous as he is. But when I first saw this film I still felt sorry for Booth at this point because it's where he changes from just being a bombastic, brutal, cruel, violent monster to a human being in great emotional pain, and you wonder what caused it. He's a villain who makes you feel uncomfortable, and it's at this point you realize how trapped he is by fate. Booth is a character as brilliant in creation as in Hopper's portrayal. He really made him come to life.

I lived in Wilmington NC for 5 years, and went to trade school right across the street from the police station in this film, which was actually torn down less than a year after I moved there! Also, I used to eat at the Dixie Cafe, which was the same location where "Jeffery Bolemont" and his girlfriend hatched the plan for Jeffery to play "amateur detective" and sneak into "Dorothy's" (Isabella Rosellini) appartment. I also drove past many other buildings in Wilmington that were also used in this film.
