I know that folks mean well when they classify a performer as underrated. I am of the opinion that saying someone is underrated dismisses their achievements. A New Englander Jeffrey Osborne has long been among my favorite male vocalists. Far from underrated Jeffrey Osborne has 5 gold and platinum LP's to his credit in addition to numerous top 40 hits. Love Ballad, a personal favorite of mine, stands as a testament to his incredible talent. I have often mentioned and posted I Just Wanna Be Your Friend, theme sing to The Toy, starring Richard Pryor throughout the years. Its a fabulously positive tune with a message for all men, with a stellar vocal performance. I only wish that the tune had been released as a single so that more people could have heard and taken its message to heart. Holding On When Love Is Gone is on favorites playlist which I play and listen to regularly. Stranger and Love Ballad will forever stir me to emotional depths like few other tunes ever have or ever will. Listen to this tune, these vocals and you, like myself, will know that there is nothing underrated here as this tune represents vocal perfection. ….I have never been in so much love before,...What a difference, and when we walk hand in hand I feel so real, …..What a difference a true love made in my life, ….And what we have is much more than can see, What we have is much more than they could see,...…. I'm white. To be really accurate, I'm PASTE white. I mean I burn under a full moon! And I grew up in a middle-class midwestern home. But ever since I was a little kid virtually ALL of my favorite singers were black and man oh MAN did I wish I could sing like Jeffrey Osborne!! Still love his music 40 years later. Still can't sing like him, or Luther, or Lionel, or Billie Ocean, or a dozen other legends.

Hello! I’m curious. Where did you hear all of these great singers? Was it on radio in your midwestern town? I was in high school when this record was released in 1983 and we didn’t have as many outlets for music as the kids have today. However, I grew up in DC, so you heard this music on the radio constantly here.

What great memories, Thomas Cole! Way cool! Always loved this. I'm a fairly good whistler, and I whistle this often, particularly at the market. I get some nice looks from the ladies now and then and it makes me think I've got game (when I really haven't). Anyway, I can't help but think that others recognize the tune, and maybe enjoy it. Perhaps just as much as I have for all this time. Peace.

I had all but forgotten about this song when I rediscovered it on an old K-Tel cassette I had from when I was growing up. All the standards of 1983 that still get played were there. And then there was this one. I never realized what a gorgeous song this is. Osborne's voice is simply out of this world, and that cosmopolitan arrangement with the steadily building tempo paired with his vocals make this heads above anything that has come out in the last 20 years. It makes today seem so much sadder that artists like him don't exist anymore. It's all so colorless and bland now.

I fell in love with this song the first time I heard it in late 1983 and bought the 45 which I still have. Still baffles me that this great number stopped at #30 with all the airplay it got back home. What a great dance number and the melody. As other commenters have stated Jeff hasn't gotten the recognition he deserves. He turns 75 in March 2023 so don't forget happy birthday wishes.
