Prof Sachs, such an intelligent and articulated intellectual, full of sound ideas that would benefit the society as well as the government, yet MSM and policy makers don't seem to be interested in those ideas. A sign for a country or a society going downhill when it only tunes in to what's popular or the rhetoric. In 50 years, America will look back and regret what it is doing now where both parties compete for popularity rather than performing sound governing and improving people's life. You can criticize China or call its name whatever you want, but that's essentially why they have been so successful in the last 40 years and why the government enjoys over 70% of its citizen's support (according to Pew's research). The bad news, if we want to look at that way, for America is that they are no where near to be overthrown. I would say they are only on their first mile of a long marathon run.

In 50 years China will have about one post-65 pensioner for every worker and its population will have declined from 1.3 billion to about 600 million due to its demographic collapse. Even the ever-compliant UN's documented of this alarming collapse in their updated report on the CCP. An analysis of the 2020 Chinese census data by Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (a Chinese think tank) shows the same. It is hard to see China as the hegemon of the 21st Century with half-empty mega cities of pensioners. Is there any way this can work economically with more pensioners than workers? We'll find out soon. The UN released in late August 2022 a report on the Chinese genocide of the Uyghur in Xinjiang. It is objectionable in the West for China to create a province-wide Soviet-style gulag for the incarceration of millions of hated religious and ethnic minority for 're-education'. And recall that China is a police state with AI monitoring and a social credit score (so dissent is not allowed pending ruined lives) and continuous nationalistic indoctrination in support of the CCP. So surveys are pretty meaningless. By comparison America has a stable demography and may have a larger population than China in 2100. Let that sink in and then consider who wins the race for the 21st century.

Plants live off carbon dioxide... The carbon count is 400 parts per million or .04% of the entire atmosphere. The US produces 15% of the global C02 emissions which is half that of China. Thats 15% of the .04% of c02 in the atmosphere. Even if all man made C02 emissions were eliminated, you talking about maybe lowering temperaturs by a half of degree in the next 100 years? C02 levels in the Paleolithic period were 5 times higher than they are today. What we really need to be concerned about is reigning in pollution, building better socioeconomic safety nets, conserving energy and taking care of the planet. Not running after a wild goose chase on C02. Hell, double the atmospheric C02 and watch the rain forest regenerate and the sahara desert shrink. At several times in earth's history there were NO polar ice caps, yet we seem to have made it so far? I hate to be a skeptic, but apparently I need to get educated.

Mr. Sachs seems to like authoritarians and police states and hates messy democracies. This is instructive to evaluate his opinions, especially since Mr. Sachs sees no difference between these governmental systems. Most in the West would disagree or strongly disagree. In fact, ongoing human rights abuses as documented in the August 2022 UN report on the genocide of the Uyghur in Xinjiang by China is one of the reasons why Western democracies and organizations (NATO, QUAD) are increasingly skeptical or even hostile of China. Values matter, except for Mr. Sachs who doesn't care - except when he relishes in blasting America for long-past sins. It also should be pointed out that China is intensely nationalistic, and this has increased after President Xi came to power. In China the hyper-nationalistic citizens are called Little Pinks. To be clear, valuing your country isn't a bad thing and in many ways is a strength - except as Mr. Sachs portrays this in a negative light and only afflicting America (which is absolutely not true). This suggests a rather obvious bias or even hatred, which is also useful in evaluating the value of Mr. Sachs' opinions.
