I was one of the little boys being dragged to the back of the Hall to receive a beating back in the early 70s. My mother did that often. She also did it to me in response to my - almost daily - admission to getting into trouble with the teacher for talking in class that day. I got fed up with the beatings and called out in desperation for help from the magic dude in the sky to help me avoid yet another spanking. I still remember many of the adults in the congregation laughing at my cry for help. And, I remember one elder in particular revelling in telling and retelling the story throughout my childhood and teenage years. When I had my own little boy, at first, I spanked him too. But, after only a few spankings I realized they were cruel, as useless with him as they were with me, and frankly unneeded.

My father, a former JW elder, beat me as a child, quite severely. Any attempts to talk to him about this where blocked by him. I have stopped talking to him for 15 years now while he still wonders what he could have done wrong to deserve this. sometimes shunning is the right answer.

Thank you for making this video. As a survivor of extreme child abuse labelled as "corporal punishment" and "loving discipline", this video firmly entrenched in me the need to call it out for what it is and was. Thanks so much!

@Paul Grundy, thank you so much for putting this together. As I sit here, I mourn over the fact that I have been improperly trained to expect as well as except abuse. This video it's helping me in my attempt of understanding why I struggle with such a tremendous amount of *"learned helplessness."* I was 25 and pregnant with my 2nt child before I ever hit my mother back. I had wished it didn't have to go down like that, but it did. All 3 of my (now adult) kids can tell you that they have never received the abuse that your video shows is clearly promoted by the org. I never wanted to break their spirits as mine was, so I had to turn that around when I became a parent. Don't get me wrong, I've made mistakes and have chosen to be accountable to them and requested their forgiveness. I believe that was helpful when I was holding them accountable for their actions as well.

ApostatBabe Linda James I never thought of it that way, but yes as a child I did in fact expect to get hit either at the KH or when we got home after the meeting, for talking to my siblings during meetings & not being able to sit still for 2 HOURS!! They were programming us from infancy!!
@apostababelindajames74615 жыл бұрын
@@michellem2042 Yes they were. And our parents too. The org taught our parents to be like a child of the org. When they speak of the org as "the bride" & "the mother," this is putting them in a child like position of obeying the (spiritual) parental direction coming from Jehovah's chain of command ({supposedly}) though Jesus, then the governing body, (notice the holy spirit is nowhere to be found in the hierarchy of the Watchtower.) So in order to be a good Christian parent, one must obey the parent org witch has told them that one must not spare the rod on their children. (So beating them is what is meant by "it") ➡️ It will save their lives.

It is interesting isn't it, that they don't insist on a literal interpretation of hitting children with a literal rod (well... anymore, it seems they used to). That's what the Bible says to do, but "oh nonono that's just a metaphor, it means [whatever we say it means]". Yet they insist that the 2 witness rule is literal & must be followed to the letter, likewise with blood, shunning, it goes on (& others like birthday rules are based on nothing). Why can't they just arbitrarily decide that THOSE things are metaphors - like they did with the rod? They pick and choose scripture, _that_ bit is a metaphor, but _that_ bit is literal. Sigh.

Sitting in conventions for so many hours on weekends as a little kid and I was expected just to sit still. My worst fear was falling asleep cus that meant getting walked out to the halls or bathrooms to be hit and than i was just supposed to come back smiling. Oh yeah and seeing other kids going through it too and not one elder in charge stepping up to put a stop to it 😤

Our congregation elder always use to say this from the platform. " make sure your child understands that it will always be more uncomfortable for him in the back room then in the seats at the kingdom hall" I kept a wooden spoon in my meeting bag. I pray for Gods forgiveness as well as my childrens forgiveness.

@Paul Thanks for this important video! Spanking or beating a child produces a terrified child. How sad that Watchtower doesn't seem to understand that. Unless they DO understand and WANT the children terrorized. Also, I must say that Geoffrey Jackson acts like an unfeeling robot. He gives me the creeps :/

Hello Paul, Thank you, sir. The WTBTS do not want to admit that physical abuse of children was widespread and accepted. I was unable to get an answer when I telephoned Bethel in London and asked them what their policy on the physical chastisement of children was. I was told to look at the website! I remember several children in my former congregation suffering appalling abuse. The adults just let it happen. Don't spare the rod. Peace be with you, Rick

Thank you so much for the video Paul. The Governing Bodys flip flopping and changing standards need to been exposed. So interesting that they feel able to be slightly progressive in this area, but continue to hold fast to rules that allow Child Sex Abuse to continue within the congregations.

She hated that,and of course I never was spanked, at all,no physical abuse.It does`nt serve a purpose.I have`nt been to a meeting in years,so I don`t get to see what`s going on,They should use discipline ,that shows love,patience and tenderness.That`s much more beneficial.Thanks for your information,as always.(I have never gotten baptised,was born into it,and am now a 65 yr.old woman)
