Hey Jehu, I'm an engineer down in Texas - I can definitely help reverse engineer the bms on these units. Let's get in touch
@OldBillOverHill4 жыл бұрын
Hey, I'm a retired engineer in Colorado, do you have a good source of schematics? I'm reverse engineering some other packs now. Looks like are using power transistors for diodes with the base lead clipped and just using the emitter/collector junctions. Thermal protection seems to be standard 65 degree thermisters. Darned components are hard to read with these old eyes and multilayered PWB's makes circuit analysis challenging. I worked for Western Electric as we brought the AT&T PBX's to fully digital class V. I retired from Avaya Bell Labs in 2001 as a software test engineer working on voip and ATM cloud development.

I'm doing this with the other scooter batteries now. My tests show they are in good shape but the design is such that the cells get out of balance. I'm charging them in smaller groups and then applying the charge to the entire pack after getting them all balanced. I found a great site that has a forum on it and found the data sheet for the LG batteries. They are typical 18650 2600aH cells. So to fully charge them you need to bring them to a 4.2VDC and hold that voltage at a constant current until they accept no more power. This is for testing and re-balancing only and the manufacturer recommends cycling them at less than the test values. I mentioned I use Outback MPPT charge controllers and they have a program for this chemistry. I'm amazed at the cost compared to stripping and building out the 24VDC banks. I'm going to use 18 of them with 20 cells each and that represents 900aH/3.2kWH of storage at an 80% cycle curve. According to independent testing they should have a 5000+ life cycle. Over 13 years if cycled everyday.

i know those batteries , those came out from OKAI scooters , which (at least here in italy) can be rented from a company named TIER those things are built to be a water sealed tank anyway the small connector of the battery goes directly to the charging port .... nothing fancy there the big connector is both power and data from/to the ESC the data use the USART protocol (9600 baud ) apparantly the BMS sends his information back to the ESC , which it must responds , apparently that message is always the same and HERE scootertalk.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=69&t=6284&start=520 they find out the exact pattern ( which by the way is 0x3A, 0x13, 0x01, 0x16, 0x79 every 5 sec ) there is also another great news the BMS replies to this message by sending back the current % of the battery ( and much more stuff ) so you don't need any external system to monitor the state of the battery you can leave the batteries in thei metal container and use them as it is ( which is pretty convenient because you can store them outside )

Finding the BMS microcontroller chip on the board might help to identify which comm standard it uses? Or even a dedicated interface controller chip that communicates with the BMS’ MCU?
@jamesturner21264 жыл бұрын
There is a 5v and a 0v pin on the connector. If you jump the 2 pins with a high value resistor like 2kohm, it should pull the 5v down low enough to trigger on the BMS. It needs a high value resistor to prevent damaging the trigger circuit. I'm up here in San Francisco. I have 12 Jump Bike packs, and several other large lithium packs.

None of the small wires read 5V, trying all small wires with 1k to each other and all possible external pins - found yellow to Batt+ or either small plug charge pin causes Batt+ to Batt- to read 0v versus 16v with all wires open. The 16v is not the battery bus because no current behind it and will not take input voltage. I Put 42 v to small connector charge pins and the BMS turns on and I see 32v on large connector pins.

It's turned off because the batteries are below threshold voltage. If you recharge them and there should be a wakeup button or something to bring the controller back online. You normally don't want to have them sitting around for long time without a charge. Love your videos, thanks.

i winced when you put it to the saw but if you're able to cut the exact depth of the aluminum and only hit the rubber insulator then maybe you can just cut a window where the bms is located?

Hello, got one of these scooter batteries you sold me, still in metal housing. Playing around it Seems like 42V into the small plug turns on the internal charger. I can see the large plug Batt+ and Batt- jump from 16v to 32 or so, plus it draw a decent current. Maybe just putting ~42input voltage to the charge input turns on BMS and chargers. A good BMS is powered by the battery, not switched on externally. Also the large plug leads look to be Batt+ and - directly not switched by BMS. Are you also seeing that with the opened ones. Was thinking those pins would be open until the BMS connects BAtt- to external wire.
@ericr47214 жыл бұрын
36.8V to the small connector does nothing had to go to 42, Also figured out polarity by checking resistance from small connected pins to large connector pins. One of the small connector pins reads connected to large connector Batt+ pin. So that is positive input.

I would suggest leaving as much of the rubber on the scooter packs as possible and only cut it back for any of the soldering on those points at the end. Go slowly. I accidentally ripped off that black wire connection atop the BMS on two of four of these scooter packs whilst peeling off the rubber coating. Plus there are so many points to accidentally short or damage on that exposed BMS board.

Here is a question/ idea. Do you think that they ever use a Hall type sensor as a quick Kill switch on a BMS? If for a scooter, maybe this would be a hidden safety feature to prevent theft etc. I have built an underwater DPV and it is common to use a magnetic reed switch as a safety on off to ensure no accidental arming. It may be that somewhere on the BMS there is a hall switch or reed switch. Maybe a strong Neo magnet may just be able to happen upon the lucky spot for activation? It may be worth considering. If you get it to work I will buy two off of you for sure!!

i just hope they have not a microcontroller like makita that bricks and tags the whole setup as BAD , makita use non reprogrammable counter chip that not yet been reversed ( and probably will never because when the ic is in this bricked condition its a one time Write on is part that cant be writed back to a non writed bit *OTP* one time programming ) , i would like to help you to bypass this microcontroller because after all the controller just shut off the BMS circuit , unfortunly im from canada i can only help from there lol , if you can only give some descriptions of majors IC that look bigger than a normal bms , give us the ic number and i will search it out for datasheet for you for free ! then with the shematic of the ic that control the bms , its a step , your video have explain more than i was ever asked for , it will be a manner to me to thanks you for your sharing hi from quebec canada did this ''rubber '' have the weitht and texture of typical rubber or its more heavy oily and skin like ? , color look like sylver-oxide thermal pads that i SAlvage under sustain boards of somes plasma tvs if it is , its some build of quality what you get !

Lithium metal and lithium-ion cells and batteries installed in or packed with equipment are mailable via air or surface transportation. This is off Canada Post

Seems like everywhere I look these NCRbd are being 'decommisioned' en masse and very cheap. Of course I'm buying a bunch myself, but I have to wonder....
