What most of you seem to forget is that, in the original 94/5 production, Hyde was also a projection with pre-recorded vocals. Jekyll would turn his back to the audience during Hyde's lines to grab a breather. Do I like the concept of the one man switcheroo? Yeah, it can look great if performed/timed well. Do I think this version fit the metal aesthetic of the production and should be judged on its own merits? Absolutely.
@CoalDiamondandhisawesomeness3 жыл бұрын
Well, in the very original world premiere production from 1990 they actually had another actor playing Hyde from behind a one-way mirror!

"What most of you seem to forget is that, in the original 94/5 production, Hyde was also a projection with pre-recorded vocals" that was during the Pre-Broadway engagements / tour. To anyone saying this version takes away the fun of seeing an actor change seamlessly between roles, you're not wrong. What it does add however is the freedom to play with the timing a little more. You can play around with Jeyll's cries even when Hyde is screaming. Watch the way Constantine falls to the ground and screams and cries in agony while his hyde is standing over him. That's something you just can't do with the other version
@totaljekkie6 жыл бұрын
I agree but in the other version the actor still can embody what both characters are going trough as they portray each side. To me that’s more interesting. Anything timing wise that can be gained in this version seems to be thrown away by too much going on.
@00rabbit74 жыл бұрын
Let's not forget .... This is how it was originally. No cheesy explosions and flying bats etc... But Hyde pre recorded in the mirror. The tour with Bob Cuccioli did that before Broadway. 1997 Broadway invented the cheesy flipping back and forth... And now we feel cheated that this went back.

I absolutely love this version and here's why; in the original version the actor switches back and forth between the two characters, illustrating their split personalities and showing off the actor's ability to transition between the two seamlessly. However, that's only if it is done right. With the traditional method, actors run the risk of playing it disingenuously and what should have been a suspenseful and heart-wrenching moment for the audience, turns into a dull cliche, or worse, comedic. This version however, shows the internal struggle Jekyll faces by shifting the perspective from outside to inside his mind. Look at the digital effects. The images of shattered glass, fire, eyes fixed on Jekyll while a demonic Hyde menacingly looms over him are symbolic. What better way to illustrate the chaotic state of Jekyll's tortured mind?

Something that I would like to see, because I would love to be a Broadway director/scriptwriter when I graduate college, is if they had the mirror like this version but Hyde would only show up when Jekyll was looking directly into it. And they sort of did the same thing with the one-man-fight in the original broadway run. They would have to position the mirror at a certain angle and make it pretty big but I think it would be fascinating to see a Jekyll and Hyde fight in one man's body like how they initially were, but make it look like two different people from the audience's perspective. Almost like they're directly looking at each other, which is the mirror, but really Jekyll is just looking back at himself and he sees Hyde.

That sounds absolutely awesome and I'd so love to see it! I can imagine Jekyll walking back and forth past it in the first bit of the song not noticing it until Hyde starts singing-

About everybody talking about the one or two actor version of the song, i want to give my vision about it. One actor - I thing it's powerful, and you can see how the pain and agony jekyll show during the transformation, as he's quickly becomes hyde, it's good, and its very important to the show. Two actors/pre recorded - I thing this role thing have such more power, like you are now deep into the jekyll and hyde universe, and you know see the show like the two characters see as well, you watch jekyll looking at hyde its a powerful and very significant thing, you are seeing just like the characters is seeing, and this can be such a powerful meaning in this show. Well, that's my opinion, i love the both
@brinmoody5 жыл бұрын
the one thing I like most about this version is the general idea behind it... Instead of having it be a physical back and forth like how it is more traditionally done, this really makes it more of a mental battle... We're seeing what is going on inside of his head as he's fighting with Hyde. Hyde is trying to claw his way out, and Henry is pushing back, and we're seeing that mental struggle Henry is having (live on the stage) with Hyde in his mind, trying to keep his hold over Henry.

I was definitely blown away by the visuals, but it still doesn't make up for the magic that was seeing an actor portray two roles as once in the same song. There's just something about that that no special effects would be able to top. And let's be honest, I think we can all agree that the reverb effect at the end was a little much.

Absolutely ridiculous. I think most of us who love Jekyll & Hyde can agree that it is a pretty silly show, but playing "Confrontation" in this style completely robs the show of one of it's highlights - seeing an actor believably switch between both personalities. The special effects lighting that served the show so well during "Transformation" is so over-the-top it drains away any power the song is supposed to have. Constantine has a fine voice, and can belt if you allow him to (and even if he couldn't do that, he's still better than Hasselhoff), so why cut the legs out from under a good performer? I don't get it. Still, this show tends to get rebooted every ten years or so... thus I look forward to the 2025 production of Jekyll & Hyde starring Jaden Smith.

@sheldonyoung43853 жыл бұрын
I need to know how people do not see this as an internal battle? A mirror is a symbol for the reflection of who somebody is. This is a perfect way to represent a 'confrontation' between his outer more "normal" self and his inner dark personality. It is still internalized because he is speaking to his own reflection. He isn't fighting with another 3 dimensional being 🤷♂️ it also gives the actor a chance to actually breathe on stage... we can't have them run out of breath during a performance now can we? 😅 however, it is not negating or going against the other way of performing this song, which can be just as effective if done right with a lot of talent... I think that both ways are both incredible and no one should dislike the one way just because the other way is the version you're used to 🤷♂️ also it's nice to see a change and someone trying something different for once because a copy of something else can get quite boring 🙈

Oh wow. This was absolutely NOT my style. It's interesting how they switched from the one person switching between Hyde and Jekyll to background motion and Jekyll. The background thing is not really bad. And it makes it a lot easier for the performer! Buuut. Of course it's hard to portray Jekyll's struggle this way. Well. After I heared Anthony Warlow's version it's really hard to compete with the master. But we have to add, that Anthony did only the concept recording( as far as I know) and they were able to cut. Which is not possible live. Still we have to give Constantine credit! Jekyll/Hyde is a really hard character to play and I think he did well. BUT still I don't like it.

Seeing this I sigh and wonder what has gone on with people's minds. While I am glad this amazing play has been revised, I don't like this. I understand the modern effect but personally I prefer the switching back and forth. It really shows Henry's struggle to with hyde. I love the set and how they put it up but it may have been a little too much. This is just strictly my personal opinion. Too much rock. While I understand the voices it was a little distracting from the duet. I don't really like the actor. Brent Ramirez did a lot better. If he, or any other actor, did it, it might be better. I think they just need to go back to the drawing board and rethink a few things first.

Sure, the visuals are neat, but how does anyone like him? The singing was absolutely terrible and hard to understand.

Nope. David Hasselhoff and all before him did this number so much better. Hyde is the evil of a man. I want to see the struggle not a screen. My comment has nothing to do with this actor but the design is very disappointing.

Bitch don't EVEN compare Constantine to the Horrendous Hasselhoff! He was the worst

@@mrseddiediaz I have seen worse than Hasselhoff but I wouldn’t call this performance art either

Ridiculous. Looks like a cheap theme park show. And what a stupid final spin.

Amy La Rue Good rebuttal. My favorite part was how you said the things that were good about this clip. Listen, that's cool that you're a Constantine fan. And by all means, cheer him on. Objectively, this is bad theatre.
