I am 61 years old and I guess you could say my "style" is realism. But I also do abstract and a lot of different things. I only just hit on that I love watercolor, gouache and acryl gouache. I think sometimes we get caught up in what's our style instead of doing what we enjoy. I am not formally trained in art. I went about learning on my own, I have been drawing since I was a child. Its who I am. Do what you love and it will be good!

Omg this is so helpful because I think for myself I need to try different art styles instead of just sticking to one thing like sketching or just flat digital art. Love this video! Really going to implement some of these ideas, really wanna get out of my comfort zone and try paint like watercolor or acrylics.

I personally think that there's a confusion between style and genre (not only you)... A style is not "semi realistic" or "colors" or that. It's to me something intangible in your way of drawing and painting, how you trace on the paper and see. An art style can be found even when switching genres. Another youtuber made a video about art style today, she show three examples where you could tell the three were her. Different, but still her ina way. It's like for writing... You style is not sci-fi poetry theater romanticism naturalism or idk what. It's in your writing your language even of you are using sentences or verses. A style is something that... Can't be described I think in the way it's really... How the hand is putting the graphite or any other thing on the paper how the eyes and the brains are seeing and translating... But many people are taking "cartoon" as... A style. It's not it's a genre. And even taking the style of someone else, you'll have differences with it. Because you are not that person. Having different possibilities of... Techniques we could say (semi realism more csrtoony etc.) is useful and as you explained there's different function and aims to each "techniques" but they are not... Different art style I would say ? All of that is to me also why going artist does not have a style or are struggling to find it... It comes with a little bit of experience and practice, with a data bank of images, of drawings and paintings you have seen made tried. I'm not saying it can't be influenced, even if there's an unconscious part to, as far as I'm concerned, you can decide to paint more like or more like... Even if... I think there's think we won't change and to which we are drawn to without even realizing it ? I've always been drawn to things with a harshness in them, often contrast in colors, with neon and bright colors. Well... When painting I'm naturally more at ease with hard edges and I can do blending... (it took me a lot of work to make it look correct as having good looking piece with a harshness and hard edges has come far more naturally) but I'm not... Fond of it. It's not feeling like me and I don't have as much fun. I like harsh contrast with edges, light, colors. I can't really describe what it is so I'm calling it harshness ha ha ^^' but it is mot that simple than "harsh edges harsh light harsh colors" it's a whole... Vibe, style... Something.

Yes, I agree! Although, I do think there's 2 types of styles. There are styles/genres of working that are larger categories or umbrellas: like realism, cartoon, etc. Then there's one's own unique voice/subtleties that makes their art feel like theirs. One is conscious, one is sub-conscious. You can switch up the "genre" as you say (although I still refer to these as "general styles"), but it will always be influenced by your personal style/voice. I use the term loosely to just refer to different ways of drawing/rendering/stylizing, I guess. But yes, I also think the word 'style" is over-simplified and there's definitely a lot more to it!
@emmanieemma8996
@emmanieemma8996 4 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with your analogy about writing. Personally, I love to do all things creative, and the issue of style/genre is pretty much present in all artistic mediums: drawing, painting, writing, singing, music, and so on! To me (and it's probably not like this for everyone) there's two stylistic names when it comes to the art that you create: genre and voice. Genre is more of a category, and multiple people can create art of the same Genre. Voice is what makes the original art that an individual person creates *unique*. You can dabble in different Genres or categories, but since the art is created by your hand it has your voice. Art is so beautiful, isn't it? :)

i literally dont have a consistent art style, every painting is its own style, like 2-3 paintings done in the same few days might be similar in style cause i might be in a mood for a style for some time but that's just it, otherwise there's no consistency lol, on one hand, it's good cause i like doing whatever i want and not restraining myself to one consistent style, but on the other hand it's really freaking hard gaining a social media following cause everyone, including myself, is looking for artists to follow that have a consistent style, 😩😩

I have so many styles, but with most of them you can tell I drew the piece. its only with 3D work when it gets harder to tell I did it. one of my old high school teachers was constantly telling me I will get nowhere with art because I don't have one set style. yeah good thing to tell a teenager (I just told him to bugger off and stop drawing in my sketchbook, and didn't go back to class after that lol [didnt need the credits anyway])

I love your new winter intro. 😊 I understand what you're trying to say. 😊 I find I have different styles too, and certain subjects make me want to draw or paint in a particular style. When I'm feeling rested and alert, I seem to gravitate towards stuff with more detail and other times I prefer looser, more abstract styles. I still need to practice other styles, though to push me out of my comfort zone and learn new skills and try different mediums. 😊 My life drawing teacher use to say to us that it was good to try other styles and the 'rules' that go along with them so you knew what would happen of you choose to intentionally break the rules. 😊

It’s good to have some style of making art! In that way you have more inspiration to create something with other mediums than if you only use one ‘art block’ is harder. I used to only love charcoals & pastels but now I also have different mediums I like and different styles of painting like abstract or semi realistic with abstract forms. Have a great Christmas break and have a merry christmas !

Listening to this I had two responses. First, to work commercially, you have to find people to buy your work, so to find buyers, do you want to be consistent, have a predictable style, and be reliable that way? Or do you want to be versatile, and be able to do any assignment that comes through the door, no matter what the client wants. That leads me to a second point, and that is about how you see your freelance work - are you a SERVICE, and make only the art your clients want, OR do you make PRODUCTS, any way YOU want them, then find buyers that like them enough to pay for the finished work? If your business is a service, the art buyers may come find you because they saw your previous work and want more of the same. If you make products, you may go longer between sales unless you are really good at marketing and sales, and know where to find customers, but you make any art you want. And clearly you can do both, and have commissions or freelance assignments going between making your own products. But i do think you have to consider your style when you are looking for buyers.

I personally have several styles. One is more realistic, I first make the watercolor drawing in a more gentle manner and then add some sharper details in pencil. The second one is 'handsome' and kinda Gothic, it's very influenced by Tite Kubo (the hatching) and Katsura Hoshino (the way the objects are lighted). Then I have this cute style that's suitable for a children's book, the shapes are very simple and the colours vibrant. All three have evolved a lot for the last 3 years and I'm just in high school.

I really like Heikala as well. And yours is a similar style that is why I subscribed to your channel. My style is something like both of yours when I am patient and in the zone! Otherwise it tends to be a simple cartoonist style or just dabbling and trying things. I am still growing as an artist and dont feel I have reached my artistic voice yet. I love watercolor but still exploring gouache as an added medium as well as color pencil. I am still on the learning curve and trying things out and feeling what I love in my own work and what doesnt work for me and what I enjoy doing the most.

I love, love these kind of videos! Feel free to keep them coming! xP In regards to style, I think there are two general types: your drawing style and then your rendering style. And within those two types, you can have many styles or methods. As you said, that's a great thing because it can help prevent boredom or even art block than if you only did the same thing with the same medium. I hope you have a great holiday break, and I'll be looking forward to your new videos as well as that shop update! ♥

I feel you SO much. I constantly jump between wanting to do Digital, Watercolor, coloring pencils and markers, and I want to get good at everything but I feel like I never fully commit to one of the tools that I really learn it. Watercoloring is what I do best and have worked with the longest. Then with digital it's even harder cause there are so many different ways to color with it, what sort of style donI want to pursue with it? I don't know. For watercolors I tend to lean mostly to illustrations and with digital and markers it's usually more for character introductions.

I've noticed the variety of my art styles as well! I primarily use watercolour with humans/humanoid creatures as my main subject. That style is my primary art style and is also the one I use for doodles and stuff. It's somewhere between cartoonish and semi-realism I'd say. I usually work on A5 format, but sometimes I get in the mood to use a bigger brush and use A4 sized paper for portrait stuff, which goes more in the semi-realism to realism style. Lately I've been dabbling into oil painting because of an art class I'm taking in my free time and that's mostly realism and I've discovered I really like painting realistic portraits with oils! I do a little digital art every once in a while and that's mostly a very clean version of my earlier mentioned semi-realistic doodle style (tho the clean part is mostly bc I get intimidated and am afraid to experiment a lot). My marker art is similar to digital cause I'm just not a fan of heavy shading. This kind of turned into a ramble, whoops, I find this topic very fascinating and am excited to see what styles I develop in the future!

Your work is beautiful..Your style is what you draw,paint ie,animals ,people etc..mediums used is mixed or one ..I use pencil and paints as you do ..but here’s what I do and I think it may help a bit and worth a try..I love watercolour,but not very good ,but I am with pencil..so what I do is go in and go as far as I can with the paint ,then I use Watercolour pencils..this I for instance if creating a ball do the deeper colours where needed,then gently wash over the pencil and blend out ,do this in layers as to get it perfect then you can go in and put in shadows where necessary ,but remember pencil il highly pigmented.. when it looks better I then finish with normal pencil..This produces a really beautifully piece of work with as much detail you want to put in ..it’s worth a try..I found this because I could not get all the detail like hair , or variation in colour depth and got frustrated ..I don’t like suggesting but you were a bit unsure as I was and this is my solution..my work is not as beautiful as this though but at least I get it to look better this way lol 😀
