messing up is part of the artistic process! i recently picked up drawing again after stopping 10 years ago, and i drew what was probably the ugliest leaf ever drawn, but it felt so good! why? well, because i was doing something that i loved again, but also because it would be a point of reference for when i redrew that leaf in a much prettier way. your mistakes help shape you into a great artist! they help you learn and grow. don't ever be afraid of growing!

Pip Plays What helped me was getting a really small sketchbook. It’s so cute and small and just makes me feel at ease. Having a big sketchbook can make you feel pressured to make fully finished (and big) pieces. With the little sketch ook, my drawings are smaller which makes drawing details harder which then results in less complicated pieces. And you can bring it anywhere with you! For the past week I was traveling and whether I was in a car, sitting on a bench or laying in a bed I could just grab my little sketchbook & pencil and draw whatever was on my mind. I hope you consider and try this!

My advice: view every "bad" drawing kind of as "bad art" leaving your system. It's really motivating to flip your view and think "yes, I can draw that awesome thing that I see in my head, I just need to cleanse the bad stuff out of my system first." Sometimes, even with a mindset like this, it feels devastating to not be perfect. But if you keep going, you will get there! (I'm a professional artist who isn't even drawing that long and this mindset really helped me to get to the point that I'm at now. So if I can earn my living by doing art after four years of drawing without being a prodigy or some shit, you can get there!)

I have a cheap sketchbook I bought with bad paper that I got so I can mess up as much as I want and then I have a sketchbook with nicer paper where I make stuff that I think is prettier that I spend more time on the drawings/paintings in there and do stuff that I am more confident in drawing. The cheaper one takes the pressure off, I also do a light pencil scribble in the middle of the page so its not so scary all blank.

I feel like it's super all over the place when it comes to sketchbooks and their purpose. I see people on the internet constantly berating people for having a nice and clean looking sketchbook while others get annoyed if your sketchbook is messy and unfinished. There is no wrong way to fill a sketchbook. And let's say some artist tells you that it's bad to have finished illustrations in your sketchbook because they used to do that too and it ended up stressing them out. Well, that's their experience, but not everyone is like that. And if you end up relating to that then it's better for you to have found out yourself through your own experience than to take their word for it and follow their instructions like it's the only correct thing to do. Everyone works differently, and who knows better how you work than you do?

I received a comment on my first ever sketchbook tour video a little while ago, and this person said that my video and sketchbook was boring and not colourful enough (because it was just pencil sketches). It was quite upsetting honestly. This is because I had always struggled to finish a sketchbook since the expectations seemed to be that every page has to have a fully finished artwork on it. This sketchbook in the video was the first ever sketchbook I had ever completed, it was the start of my official art journey and the start of my sketchbook enlightenment, where I realised that sketchbooks are meant to be used for anything and everything. Every drawing in it was made in pencil, there was no colour, no finished artworks, it was just pencil sketches for me to figure out my style and learn anatomy. So this comment I received did hurt, but I tried not to get upset. This person seems to be misguided, like many people, on what a sketchbook SHOULD look like. I don't make my sketchbooks for other people, my first sketchbook tour was meant for others to find and see my art, improvement, inspiration and ideas, but I do not cater it to entertain people in that way. It has taken me a long 7 years to bring myself to finish an entire sketchbook, it has taken me a long 7 years to get into the habit of daily drawing, and it has taken me a long 7 years to understand that most sketchbook expectations are unrealistic and that a sketchbook is allowed to be a mess of ideas and practice. I really hope more artists come to learn and understand this, because it can be quite a toxic thing to have such high sketchbook expectations and it can really hinder your art and creativity

I think skills also has something to do with how a sketchbook ends up looking. Naturally for highly skilled artist (i.e pro artist, art KZbinrs etc), they would end up looking much more beautiful and refined compared to beginners, to those who simply draw as a hobby, and generally to the average person. It took me a really long time to understand that because back then, I would roll my eyes whenever I see Art KZbinrs post their sketchbook tours because I know they're not going to be realistic. But they are realistic because their skills allow them to have such beautiful spreads. Now, I love watching sketchbook tours because they're a source of inspiration for me.

When I was doing my Art degree, our sketchbooks were assesed and I found that really stressful, consequently I didn't touch them again for years. Recently, I started planning a piece and really thinking about it. The fact I'm giving myself permission to make mistakes and knowing nobody will judge me is very liberating. 😊

Yeah I've struggled with trying to make every page a fully illustrated piece and I've been trying to work on not doing that. It's a sketchbook it's meant for sketching. And not every sketch is exactly a GOOD sketch and it's ok because that's part of learning. Love the video as always Jel ❤❤❤❤

To me sketchbooks are like a safe place. And I totally agree with you, a sketchbook is great for brain dumps, test things out, experiment, notes and just have fun! Fun is the such an important part of art and as long as you're having fun and learning its always worthwhile

I saw a tip for getting over the fear of ruining your sketchbook in a KZbin video (it might have been yours but I saw it a while ago so I dont really remember). You take a translucent medium and color in a blob of that material. I started doing this and I find that it helps a lot because now I am committed to the page and feel no worry of ruining it. Also I’d like to say that I love your intros.

I totally agree with you. I bought a moleskine sketchbook many years ago and I never used it because I thought I needed to fill it with perfect drawings. That stoped me from drawing for a couple of years... then I just realized how stupid I was being and how much I wanted to draw and improve, that I just started doing all sort of things in my sketchbooks and now no one can stop me!! 😊

This is some really good advice that I've been trying to implement myself! Just recently I tried doing textile art with fabric, yarn and felt in mine! I glued a square of denim fabric as a background in my sketchbook then I sewed a leaf and a dragon fly out of felt and then glued it on top of the denim. I'm really happy with how it turned out and I would love to do more things like that in the future.

I'm currently studying Steve Huston's figure drawing book he stated that you're sketch book is we're you figure things out and who cares if you make a mistake most people won't see the mistake, I personal have 3 sketch books at any time one for more completed pieces one for studies and one for scribbling.

Thank you for your input on sketchbooks. Most of my sketchbooks always come off as messy and not as pretty to the eye, but that's the point. It doesn't have to look all pretty and aesthetically pleasing all the time, it's there for literally anything you draw on (and especially practice.) I still constantly need to remind myself that sketchbooks have no limits and a great opportunity to try new things ^^

I totally agree! I think the problem is people are confusing “sketchbooks” with “Art/Mixed Media Journals” and I think it can be very intimidating to new/novice artists etc to see these beautiful art journals and mixed media journals flipped through in videos and photos posted on social media and improperly labeled as “my sketchbook” when they should be labeled “my art journal”. Sketch book implies that these are just practice and maybe a few that got taken further for various reasons, this can 100% discourage other artists trying to learn and or improve seeing these fully finished “practice pages” in these mis-labeled “sketchbooks” when in all actuality these are art journals full finished pieces, that took a minimum of a few hours and are actually not practice at all. The only person that sees my sketchbooks is me. If someone asks to flip through, I give them the art journal, as this is where all these sketchbook ideas end up, in an art journal or on a canvas, that’s what the sketch book is for, ideas. Idk bout y’alls but theres some weird and random and sometimes scary shit and also personal thoughts in my sketchbooks and ain’t no one need to be seeing that but me!!

Another great video 😊 I prefer to have 2 sketchbooks, one for finished and polished things that i love looking through and also keep as a diary by putting some things on the back pages of the drawings (it's spiral-bound at the top) and one specifically for rough sketches that doesn't need to look aesthetic at all ☀️

Can’t explain how much I needed this video. I watch so many sketchbook flip through because I love them but they do make me feel down about my own sketchbook. ‘Why is mine not as polished and complete as theirs?’ ‘Should I be perfecting everything I sketch?’ I’m always buying new sketchbooks with the intent to make this the ‘perfect’ one. But why? Only I’m going to see it, I have no plans to share them just yet so why do I feel like they’re going to be critiqued? Everything u said here is true I used to set limitations to my sketchbook and eventually using it for something I didn’t expect. Now I feel so insecure about my art and this video really helped me to see that a sketchbook doesn’t have to be for anyone and that it’s like a personal diary for your art that you can flip through anytime u need to. I think this is a great video. Showing that being a artist doesnt mean you allways make finished pieces, showing the real sketching and working in a sketchbook and that this sketchbook doesnt have to be perfect... KZbin is great but can be misleading for me as an beginner artist. I got into drawing a bit ago after falling out of it for about 5 years (I more or less was just copying) and now whenever I’m in a sketchbook I’m trying to learn. I practice anatomy and construction, different facial expressions, and trying to think of ways to portray a character overall, if I end up drawing something pretty full I also use that to practice with colored pencils to see what looks good. I found your channel after like months and when I heard the intro I knew it was gonna be something good even though I forgot your channel but your intro still made me recognize it and gosh I am so happy to watch your content again! I also found this video really useful, it actually helps to just sketch and doodle in your sketchbook. I am actually doing that now and it's so much fun than just restricting myself to finished drawings. I just went back to lined notebooks, I drew SEVEN PAGES in a few hours. sometimes we just need something small to make you feel comfortable for a while, I don’t necessarily recommend it for everyone but i got to the point I hate drawing and want to quit so bad, but drawing used to be a thing I loved so much nothing could stop me from drawing. So being at that point pushed me to try a lot of things. Spent a lot of money on getting a cintiq, paint, canvas, markers, sketchbooks, and all that just to realize right now I need my lined sketchbook. Now I have those things to explore with later when I feel more comfortable with my art. I wish for all artists here and everywhere lots and lots of motivation!!

i appreciate making an aesthetically pleasing sketchbook, not because i actually do finished pieces in mine, but it has inspired me to try to actually make a page look good, or cohesive. growing up my sketchbooks were a lot of literal scribbles and like one drawing in the center of a page, not drawing on the backs, if i got frustrated with a drawing id just scribble it out and flip to the next page. flipping through it didnt really make me feel that great about my art. now im inspired to try to fill pages and not leave big blank spaces, i try to keep a page cohesive in SOME way, its still very loose but it makes me feel better that theres effort put into it. the book itself is like one big art piece!

For a long time, I never even thought about drawing in anything other than sketchbooks, or, frankly, doing anything but what a lot of people would call "sketching". I'm a full-on sketcher. Most of my "finished" stuff, even now, starts and ends on the same piece of paper, with the same pencil. Unless I'm doing digital. I use sketchbooks for warmups, concept sketches, studies, and sometimes finished pieces.

I used to be one of those people who did a finished thing on every page. I experimented and all that, but everything was polished and fully rendered (this included the practice drawings I did). It took me ages to realise that I'd completely cut out doodles and sketches and that was having a negative effect on me - no wonder I kept getting art blocks! Not to mention being a perfectionist like that made me lose the sense of fun I'd got when I used my older sketchbooks. Luckily, I've got all that back now! Long story short, doodling saves lives and sketchbooks are an adventure!

To follow this mental health video I'd enjoy hearing of ways to ensure we maintain our drawing hand healthy. How often do you take breaks from drawing, what hand exercises might you do & what do you keep in mind to not cause your hand unneeded stress? I overworked mine which gave my index finger a slight burning sensation & a bit of a tremor. I need to be more conscious of how I'm using it & see where I can spare it.

The thing is in the UK teachers are demanding highly finished artwork in sketch books I've seen talented children put off art forever by these so called art teachers I'm glad you've produced this video about this subject maybe the message will get to some of these so called art teachers.

A tip for my fellow anxious artists: Get a small(er) sketchbook! Having a big sketchbook can really make you feel pressured to make big and highly detailed pieces. And big sketchbooks can be pretty intimidating. With a smaller sketchbook you can’t put in that many details which personally makes me feel at ease. Plus you can carry it anywhere!

I bought a cheap sketchbook (less than 3€) but for the longest time I was scared to use it. I thought every page had to be coherent and I couldn't experiment in it. But recently I discovered i can use acrylic paint in it and I've filled as many pages in a week that I did in 3 months. I'm so happy with it now no page looks the same and ive progressed a lot

I would like to add on that recently I’ve been so obsessed with what people like and what people want to see I don’t even think about my own art journey and enjoyment. I came to this realization recently and I finally have let loose and started drawing dumb doodles, fanart, etc. I’ve been in the mindset I can’t draw anything that that hasn’t been fabricated by my imagination. Which I still enjoy but I’ve been so intense about it I just didn’t enjoy it anymore. That’s all I had to say.

I have 4 sketchbooks specifically one for my fully rendered art (artbook style), one for my studies, one for thumbnailing and one for my smutty art.

I would really love to have this podcast style videos. It helps me concentrate more on my sketches and full detailed drawings like I'm doing right now. Also i do agree with the sketchbook. It's called sketchbook for sketching 😂 not for fully-detailed drawings. I mean you could do that but it's like locking yourself in a prison then leaving the key hanging in one corner and just imagine the key wasn't there. All in all this video is really amazing ♥️😍

I used to be terrified of using a sketchbook unless I was sure my drawing would be perfect. Then, a few years ago, I decided to make my own sketchbook. I used printer paper and cut up a cardboard box for the cover and splodged some paint over it. Because it was all recycled and cheap paper, I was so much more relaxed about using it

I love using really small sketchbooks, but I always feel like I should be drawing bigger or that my skills aren’t developing because I’m not using more space, but I always feel more inspired and more comfortable when I just have a small page to fill, what do you think?

Maybe you could have a small sketchbook with good paper that you like, and a big one with a bit thinner paper to just sketch more freely in with pencil? Big paper is great for fast sketches, like anatomy studies etc. but can be overwhelming to paint on

I feel like you should just do what you're comfortable with. You can still develope and grow as an artist even with a small sketch book. It dont matter what size sketch book you got imo

I agree with you I use my sketchbook for anything and everything but I’ve noticed having watched many sketchbook tours there are 4 types of sketchbooks people commonly have Idk if anyone else noticed this. 1. The sketchbook that only has fully finished pieces beautiful art all colored or finished 2. The sketchbook that only has doodles and no finished pieces because they wanna keep it for only sketching or doodles you may see some color in the sketchbook but it’s more messy and doodling colors 3. A mix of a and B there are some sketches and doodles but also some beautiful and fully finished works of art in the sketchbook Or 4. The kind of sketchbook where the artist fills up every single spot on the page and there are loads of doodles on the pages and things stuck into the pages to fill in white space and basically in these type of sketchbooks your not going to see a lot of white pages bc they make the most out of every page! And if you really want to go future on rare occasion you find the sketches that are delicate to only one thing like a sketchbook for only studies, or only comic thumbnails, or only ocs ect.
