I really love your "how to fill a sketchbook" videos. They are so satisfying to watch and I feel so inspired 🎉❤

Heyas, thanks a bunch for the share and tips and ideas!!! I currently don't own a sketchbook..... but I really love making art and this might just be the motivation to actually save a little and get me a sketchbook. I do oil pastel paintings of mostly landscapes and a sketchbook could work great with planning composition and even do little color swatches on the side and plan the whole painting better. Thanks so so much!!!

I use my sketchbook to draw whatever I want. So it's just a bunch of random stuff ... I don't have the most aesthetic sketchbook spreads. Also I love the deer in pencil crayon so much!!
@serendestiny75743 жыл бұрын
lately I've been enjoying filling a spread with silhouettes of variations of an object I don't really know how to draw yet, like the different ways a tea pot can look like for exemple ;) I find it's a fun and not too daunting way to learn what an object looks like because the silhouette allows you to focus on the big shapes and not get too caught up in the details or even the perspective, which can come after, once you've familiarized yourself with the essential characteristics of the object ! I do them with watercolors, it forces me to be quick and bold, and it makes for a colorful spread ;)

I heard a tip to either get a small sketch book or break up the page into a bunch of boxes so you only have a box to fill instead of a whole page.

Slap come color on it before you start drawing (paint the page, put some colored paper, scraps of paper, sticky notes, etc etc)

Maybe you just need something to get you going... I'm filling up my first sketchbook ever (which is intimidating), and I started it in December...and from December to late July I did around 20 pages (not much lol), but in early August I think I got the hang of it, and I did 25 pages since then :) it varies with the day or week, and I always try not to force it if I feel I'm not in the mood, but I think the more you do it, the more confident you get

These are lovely ideas! I'm trying to keep my sketchbooks as free as possible, which means a bunch of random stuff and incohesive pages. When I feel stuck I often go to MapCrunch to draw landscapes. Sometimes I try to draw them as nice as possible, other times I try to draw the landscapes as simple as I can or with a limited palette. Sometimes I pick colours that aren't in the original reference. That can also work very inspiring!

I always use mixed media sketchbooks, even if I don't exactly do mixed media. It's nice to have the option, as sometimes I like to work in colored pencils, but sometimes I like markers, and either way I always like the rougher paper texture. Lately I've been sketching in mainly ballpoint pen. I love the fact that it gives me less control, it makes me work more abstract, and put down as limited of lines as possible. When I sketch in pencil, I feel like being able to eraser holds me back? I have too much control, I can erase and erase until a drawing is "perfect", and that's when my art is far from "perfect". But with pens, it forces you to commit and work around your mistakes. I even like when I make a huge mistake I can't cover up, because it showcases the imperfections, and makes me feel more okay with making those mistakes! And more importantly, it's made me loosen up more, knowing everything won't be perfect, but still getting more than satisfying results!

4:18 for the gel pens check JetPens , they have a video about reviving dried up pens, 6:28 I use cheap watercolors or color i already used for this, so there isn't the "guilt" feeling of "wasting" the good ones, I usually do a wash of colors on a page around the sketches, i use better watercolor or guache if i want to color in a sketch even in a simple way, I also suggest using washi tapes or water based markers to decorate the pages or put accents. Sometimes i do it the opposite way, specially if i have guache from a previous work, I use it to fill a page and then sketch on top. Happy Sketching !

Great tips. 😊 If I have a gel pen with the ink stuck in the barrel, I take the cartridge out of the barrel and roll it between my palms until the ink moves down the tube to the nib, so maybe that'll work with your pens?

re: storing pencil crayons Kind of like in a store! I had an old 72 pack of prismas from 20 years ago I never used much, so I removed the hard box and was left with the three rows in the felt trays, if that makes sense. I used foam core from the dollar store to build a little shelf with skinny slats, kind of like a CD holder? Just wide enough to slip the trays inside. So every colour is organized with the butt out so I can identify each pencil, and they are right at arm's reach, so I don't have to move around boxes to use or clean up supplies. I use them way more often now! (am lazy lol). But if I am on the couch and can't reach, I can still just pull out the entire trays and take them with me.

I think it is more motivating to have nice sketchbook pages, obviously not all pages have to be perfect or that’s too much pressure but all pages being bad can be discouraging because sketchbooks are often where you’re trying to learn or try things or what have you and if it’s all bad that just sucks man. But I believe there’s also merit to having a “trash sketchbook” where you just let loose and draw bad and leave that to be a place for purposefully crappy art whether it’s a warmup or a frustration scribble or a way to vent emotions just with art that doesn’t matter and it can be freeing
