First time to try the food here yesterday and ordered the exact same food this guy ordered. My order was taken by the exact same lady in the video as well. I was surprised that the jellied eels didn't taste as bad as it looked, but I definitely understand why it's not for everyone. The pie, mash, and liquor, tasted very comforting - the rich minced beef pie with the light mash and parsley gravy just works really well together. It's the type of food that you wouldn't mind eating again and again.

I grew up only a few miles from that pie and mash shop, there used to be two Kelly's in the road but sadly due to a change in the population there's only enough business for obe. Roman Road Saturday market...lots of good stalls back in the day and pie and mash was the thing to have for lunch. You should have had the stewed eels with the pie. Jellied eels are more of a tea time food, I love them and can easily eat a big quantity is one sitting. Vinegar and white pepper along with some good crusty bread, delicious. Respect to you for trying them, think you'll definitely be back for some more pie and mash.

All of the food looks absolutely horrible and you all have a horrible reputation for food as well.

The original pies served were eel, made with eels from the Thames. Hence the parsley sauce, which was made from parsley, flour and the liquid the eels stewed in. Later, beef and mutton pies became also available, and as eels became more scarse, beef took over as the cheap meat to make pies out of. However the parsley sauce remained.

Here's a pleasant American guy doing some research into one of old London's most traditional foods, which by the way I was brought up on and adore for a treat, and he goes into the historic Kelly's, and the customers are telling him eels are "disgusting", the woman behind the counter tells him they make her throw up, and even the proprietor says he's a bit 'iffy' about eels. What a way to greet someone publicising eel, pie and mash. Absolutely bizarre, and he'd have to be forgiven for thinking these Brits are pretty weird people.
@adamdudley25902 жыл бұрын
The liquor is traditionally the cooking "liquor" from when the eels are boiled, with parsely and flour added for flavour/thickening. If you go to a pie and mash shop which still does it this way and take the meal home, the liquor will set. Also, the pies are normally made using two types of pastry, a rough-puff as mentioned in the video for the crust, but a suet pastry for the base, it would stand up better to the meat juices and liquor. Of course, they do apple or cherry pies, with custard, for afters, which are cooked in the same dishes and the meat pies. Clean ones, of course... Love G.Kelly.
@labradorgeek Жыл бұрын
F Cooke's liquor is eel-based, as one of the founding family did it that way. Joe Cooke, the proprietor there, said they use english parsley (and spanish when they cant get the english), and the bottom crust is suet, and they re-use the trimmings from the top and bottom in it. Also, they got a shop in Essex as well, now, in addition to the east end. Im hoping to go there, one day.
@tizianodematteis70717 жыл бұрын
I think the reason many Italians like that is because we have some Italian versions of it (usually the eel is fried first and then preserved in vinegar and herbs, but not necessarily) and those are considered delicacies and are often served on Christmas or special occasions.

I have an interest in British cuisine and food in general. Being from the U.S. I am wondering why many of the British food recipes didn't make it over to America. My assumption is that our pot pies are kind of related to the meat pies? I believe the British also call them pasties?
@gandaruvu4 жыл бұрын
pasty is only specifically for a type of pie from cornwall. And yes, most pies in America are derived from English tradition of putting anything into pie form; including apple pie, the most american food of them all, was english.

Pie, Mash and Liquor is amazing. More people need to stop judging how it looks it tastes great. It's not the culinary experience of your lifetime, but it's good, comfort food. And well done with the chilli vinegar man did it properly. The only thing you're missing is a bottle of sarsiparilla. Eels though - nah not for me. Stewed eels aren't bad and they're very tender, but jellied eels are a no. I don't like cold cooked fish that much as it is (except prawns).
