I don’t even know if this is what the song is about, but….As a drug addict I can relate to this song. Sadly, for a while, drugs were the only thing that didn’t let me down. I could always depend on the pill. It didn’t stay that way…Now, I’ve been sober for 14yrs and don’t need the substance. Great song!

Jelly Roll is a legend. Such a talented and very humble artist. you should check out Struggle Jennings if you haven't already. His music is very similar. He and Jelly do a lot of collabs together.

I can't speak for the writers obviously... For me it felt like...the " monster" that became familiar like " family now" could be any fear that we can relate to or pain that's holding us down or holding us back. I think the song did well to not judge anyone's personal situation and for that reason it becomes more relatable.
