Always glad to see you put up a new video. I noticed you mentioned having good luck with the 4 micron in another video and I was up to buy more compound because I had ran out of a few. I’m looking forward to trying out the two that will take it further than I have been using. The only thing that’s kind of a bummer is that it seems to be taking a while for them to get to me. Although it’s understandable since it’s coming from Taiwan I believe. Great video!

From what i heard it might be interesting to test what would happen if you strop a knife against an unloaded strop and see if the strop itself is abrasive (if you haven't tried already).
@michaelchristy49826 жыл бұрын
klebics I know a guy who wanted to push the idea that leather alone was enough to strop on. After an extended amount of passes, he began to see black on the leather that he assumed was steel, and made the argument that using compound wasn’t necessary. My counter argument was, diamond compound is easy enough to get, and so much more effective, why fight the idea? Also, I’m not sure what the bare leather actually did for sharpness, so there’s also that. I tested the idea that stropping on cardboard was an option to see for myself. Using 8Cr13Mov, after 200 passes per side, there was no cutting to the steel at all. No steel build up on the cardboard and no change to the edge. With a little compound on the cardboard, the effect is immediate. So again, arguing with the idea of using compound is a waist of time and energy, and comes off as a juvenile move. Once you’ve used good compound and seen what a difference it makes, the idea of trying to go around it seems very silly.
@klebics6 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Sorry, I was actually trying to suggest that some strop materials may dull your edge. Some cheap grades of toilet paper made here in China contains SO MUCH sand (from grinding the pulp) that it feels scratchy. Because the compounds were good on wood but not on the strops, i thought maybe the strops themselves were scratchy? In any case, i used to strop on newsprint, and also newspaper because of the urban myth that the ink is abrasive. Now i only use wood, thanks to your advice, with the SAME compounds and seem to be doing much better
@klebics6 жыл бұрын
And from the plastic fab industry, they say the paper that protects the plexiglass ruins their carbide bits. (i.e. they'd see a thin line of dulled blade on the bit after use. The part of the tool that cuts plastic, on the other hand, is fine) From what i understand they attribute this to some sort of abrasive quality of the paper...and i can only imagine that this is due to mineral introduced into the pulp content (?)

Love your vids as always. Can i ask you, if i wanted to invest in a Maxamet knife, which model is least likely to get overheated/botched, and is the Hong Kong distributor listed on Spyderco's website reliable? I'm obviously afraid of fakes. Thanks
@michaelchristy49826 жыл бұрын
klebics it’s important to keep your strops clean so you don’t get scratches from them. I’ve had pieces of diamond (I think from a diamond plate) get onto strops and cause major problems to an edge. My guess is that the wood you used was new. Maybe that was the difference.
@1337flite Жыл бұрын
Ive had really good luck with the Jende nano cloth strops and their emulsion inlcuding on a maxamet PM2, I suspect if your not having good luck I suspect your angle is incorrect or your pressing too hard. You essentially don't need any pressure. When you get the angle right onthe nano cloth you can really feel it. It is a smooth resistance- that sounds weird, bt it's liek the strop has slight sunction on the edge.
@dfailsthemost2 жыл бұрын
I feel like nano cloth is the kind of thing that should work in theory but might need a very specific approach. But I've only read about them, so I don't know for sure. Maybe just way better on convex bevels.
@captainmarvelous87394 жыл бұрын
i may be wrong but it looks like your heavy handing the stropping, or like you just came off something 300 grit. Also, curious why you dont put the stones etc. down on a base, that whole wobbly thing you got going on doesnt seem like you could even keep a consistent angle, but your bevels look decent. When you used the wood compound you looked like you were keeping clean strokes. I've have amazing results on a lighter touch, depending on what grits i brought the edge up on first. Razor sharp off the stones, then go feather light on the strop. your just rolling the edge over otherwise.
@michaelchristy49824 жыл бұрын
Captain Marvelous but my edges aren’t being rolled over. It’s a matter of self control.

I made mistake of using gorilla glue to make a strop and it created a wavy, uneven layer under the leather that wrecked it. Super glue I think probably best. Sacrifice adhesive strength for thinness

Dear Michael, thanks for another informative video. How do these 3 compounds compare to the the 3 corresponding Temo compounds (4-1-.1 microns). Thanks
@michaelchristy49827 жыл бұрын
Peter Dmitrenko these are very different then Temo. Temo are oil based compounds. These are water water based emulsions. That being said, these are higher quality.

Micheal I have a question about getting the edge to hair whittling sharp on s30v and cruwear. I go through the dmt Stones 320, 600, and 1200 then I move to the spyderco ultra fine. After that I work on wood strops starting at a 7 micron down to 3,1, and end on a .5. I Occasionally get hair to whittle but not with ease. Do you have any suggestions of other steps in the process or stones I should add in or take out?
@michaelchristy49827 жыл бұрын
Grady McMillan make sure you apex the blade with each stone and completely remove the burr with the first strop. Two very important steps. Also, what edge angle are you at?
@gradymcmillan68487 жыл бұрын
I try and keep everything at a 30 as best as possible. Sometimes I realign with the dmt sharping system to get everything even again after dulling. I’m working with a yojimbo2 in s30v and a pm3 in cruwear. I normally notice that I have removed most of the burr after the spyderco ultra fine.
@gradymcmillan68487 жыл бұрын
Michael Christy I’ve been working with a s35vn knife since your last reply and I have it like electric on a hair but not quite whittling. I backed off on the ultra fine keeping the burr on the edge until the strop. Right now I’m using cedar wood do you think that is what is causing it to not get the results I’m looking for?
@michaelchristy49827 жыл бұрын
Grady McMillan take the burr of with the first strop. If you’re not completely removing it with the first strop, you’re waisting effort with the following strops. Remove the burr and the strops that follow will refine the edge.

How do you clean diamond loaded leatherstrop that has loaded up too much? By the way I haven’t had luck with the nanocloth yet. It seems to take the edge off the knife. So i think i‘ll stick to the leather. Perhaps you figure it out how to use the nanocloth. That would be interesting.
@PaulK390S90V7 жыл бұрын
Somewhat off topic but did you lap your spyderco ultra fine stone? Or was it acceptable new? I messaged on a different video and kind of got my answer in this video about what to use for my free hand. Im on the right track. I have my spyderco fine that was way out of flat so I lapped it and wore out my dmt x coarse pretty good. Just don't want to have to do that with the bigger uf stone! And is your technique holding the stone in your hand the best way to keep the angle consistent and get the best edge? Im going to try it tonight. I have my buck vantage s30v work knife I need to do. I'm still not quite to the point where I want to sharpen my $200+ knives free hand so I use my kme but I do a lot of kitchen knives and folders that I'm not so concerned about them having identical bevels and whatnot. In my other comment I said I have a dmt xcoarse dia, dmt duo coarse/fine, then my spyderco fine, and I'm getting the ultra fine for Xmas. I'm thinking now I should be all set with that setup. But back to the other comment would you recommend anything for after the ultra fine as far as whetstones go that are not too expensive? I love the feel of whetstones and want at least one to add to my line up.
@michaelchristy49827 жыл бұрын
Paul Lonardo the steel or the edge that I want on it determine what stones I use. Stone in hand sharpening is what I usually prefer, but I still use other techniques from time to time. It’s not the easiest method at all, but it’s what I prefer.

Michael I have some custom strops being made for me by Springfield leather in the USA that I resell here in Brasil. Latigo leather very waxed and infused. Would you like to receive one to give a test drive and give some feedback 10 to 12 oz, chromexcell and veg treated. The pores are so tight you can cover a 3x11 with 2 small drops of cbn. I'll be glad to ask the company to send you some for you to test it. It would be great to have a feedback on the product compared to other leathers you have

Jovonn Trujillo I’ve worked with steels like S110V and HAP40 with Shaptons. They’ll get sharper, even hair whittling (if your good), but not as good as using diamond and ceramic. The edge lacks from alumina stones.

Kangaroo leather strop thickness vs steel profile, opinions?
@michaelchristy49827 жыл бұрын
No: Six I’m not following the question. What is it that you mean by steel profile?
@volcanowb7 жыл бұрын
Michael Christy Do you believe blade material and grind/edge profiles govern strop construction material selection and the choice of abrasives or not, during the stropping process? Clear as mud, right? Thanks!
@michaelchristy49827 жыл бұрын
No: Six I think that strops with more give do better with convex edges then V-grinds. Beyond that, I think that the style of the sharpener has more to do with how a strop should be made then the knife. Or (and this is often the case) the sharpener can adapt to the strop.
@volcanowb7 жыл бұрын
Michael Christy Would you mind measuring the thickness the Jende kangaroo leather is? Do you favor CBNs over Diamond compounds? Do you favor any particular compound at this time? Sound like you use Ken Schwartz products mostly?

No: Six I use Hand American quite a bit, and Ken Schwartz products quite a bit.

Awesome review man, I have been on the fence about ordering some emulsions and strops from them for a while. Ended up running into a local that lives in the same state of VA that has been making strops for a while and just got into making emulsions. He makes both Poly and Diamond in a few different bottle sizes and microns sizes, if you get a chance or wanna check him out his website is bastardstrops.com and ig is Bastardstrops as well. First time getting some emulsions, so looking forward to receiving them and giving em a go. i purchased a three pack on 1, .5, and .25 micron. Have a good day.
