Some more sad facts about MAMAMOO: Solar had to audition 40 times to become a trainee and RBW(her current company) was her last audition before ultimately quitting Moonbyul was scammed before by other companies, was told her vocals isnt good enough for the group and should rap instead after spending years of vocal training (though she has recently gained the confidence to sing again since last year) Wheein's family problem was exposed to the public by journalists Hyejin was bullied since her childhood for being 'chubby' and for having darker skin and saw a petition saying she should be kicked out of the group. They all have been through so much and that is why for me as a fan take a lot of confidence lessons from them

Instead of treating them as idols, Mamamoo feels more of a friend who you would cheer on on every stage. Every performance is a shared experience with Moomoos. That's why everyone loves their stages. Really? But but... Solar is like perfection?! I couldn't believe she is short (like 1.61 m) , she looks slim like a model (who are mostly over 1.70)! And not in an anorexic way but a perfect slim built (usually shorter means stockier). and how can an agency ever make comments like that? And even if she wasn't perfect, that voice OMG, you should be able to look like anything if you can sing like that. And not just my bias, all four girls are amazing visuals, vocals and performers, and not just recent stuff but even the oldest vids!

The reason why (and they own up to it) was because it was overseas, New York event. The event coordinators told them everyone just lip syncs and highly recommended them to do so. They've talked about it a number of times since citing how bad they are at it haha

as for that bit at the end about them not being pretty enough... that, sadly, is a huge thing in korea, esp kpop. they've got such ridiculously...well...ridiculous beauty standards there. it's slowly getting better (partially because of mamamoo, esp hwasa) many groups are built around a 'visual' who is basically just there to look pretty and can sometimes sing or dance decently. the rest of the group has to look good next to that person, singing/dancing ok is a plus. and gotta be skinny and pale skinned (dark skin is still frowned upon by most of korea, even as quite a lot of them have the darker skin tones they hate. 'pale' is associated with wealth and beauty since the royalty was always pale from not having to be outside constantly and even used makeup to appear paler. darker tones are associated with peasantdom and hard work, farming and such. so, even as farmers are looked up to for their work, they're also looked down upon...it's...weird) so hwasa showing up both being bigger than a twig and on the darker side set a lot of people off... while all four girls got crap for 'not being pretty enough' from general kpop fans or korean netizens, hwasa got a bigger focus than the others (to the point there was a petition made to kick her out of the group). later, byul had similar because she's a rapper in a vocalist group the agency wasn't trying to belittle them when they told them they weren't exceptionally pretty, instead, they were trying to prepare them for the reactions that they inevitably got. mainly because the group was built differently. they wanted everyone to be able to sing (and do everything else, even) but, most importantly, wanted them to play well together. wheein and hwasa were the core of the group since those two have been best friends since middle school. one of the two ceos of the company said he enjoyed the way they interacted and wanted to make a group that was the same way

About the agency, there's some context missing there. They weren't saying that model stuff to hurt the girls, but to help them understand what their path into the industry would look like. Most of us don't have super-model qualities, and it's not usually something that concerns us, but the world of k-pop groups is inherently plagued with vanity. There are a ton of trainees that struggle because they don't fit into Korean beauty ideals as well as other candidates do. For some companies, it's even more important than talent. MMM's company specifically wanted to form a group of talented *performers* with good energy, who were being overlooked because they didn't fit the pop-standard, and to this day they're the only girl group the company handles. on moonbyul's name, you did pretty well with that first attempt. you can call her 'moonstar', if you're more comfortable with that, though. it's one of her nicknames and even gets used in songs both by herself and by other members (byul means star, so if you translate just that part of her name, she is moonstar) all four members technically use stage names, but byul and wheein pretty much use their real names as the stage names. byul's real name is moon byuli (sometimes writtin byulyi or byulie) and wheein's real name is jung wheein (or whee in), she was named after a comic character and may very well be the only wheein in korea. ahn hyejin went with 'hwasa' because it means 'bright' and kim yongsun had put the most work into her name, since it's sort of approached in two different ways. one, 'solar' as in the 'sun' in her first name. and two, she had wanted to go with 'doremi' as her stage name, based on the solifege system. thankfully that got vetoed by their ceo, but he stuck with the theme and just went a few bars further to 'so la', she liked that, plus the way it tied into the 'sun' aspect mentioned before...so, solar was born (they all had terrible name suggestions that we're glad didn't go through. hwasa was almost 'pow-g' as an example)

on what to watch... of course, you've got music videos, still. "wind flower" and "gogobebe" to wrap up the four season title tracks, "mr ambiguous" to see where it all began, probably "piano man" and "decalcomanie"... but really, absolutely anything by them is worth checking out, even their ads the harmonies at the beginning of this guide video are actually from one of their cf songs, "woohoo" which is an ad for lg phones (sort of easy to tell when you watch the video for it). they've also got "girl crush" and "sky sky", which are cfs for two different mobile games done years apart, as well as "everyday", a song/video for a brand of yogurt and their newest cf song is "gleam", the song you saw came out just a few months ago. that one's for a glasses company...the video has a lot of glasses, sunglasses and contact lenses in it, but quite a few people still find it hard to believe the song is an ad and not a full comeback. mamamoo goes all out for whatever they do for live performances, there's the immortal songs medley i linked in your previous mmm video (and i see others have linked here, too) as well as the harmonies/impromptus video, even "mamamoo being a mess while singing live", that one also overlaps a bit with the comedy stuff. the mama 2018 and mma 2018 performances are gold (if do mama, make sure you find the 8 minute version. mnet chopped their stage up into 3 segments), pretty much any award show performance they did (they always change things up at award shows), maybe a few fancams from various concerts or festivals. they're in their element at festivals, goofing around onstage while still killing people with their vocals. there's also the pikicast version of "no more drama" and then for funny stuff, mmmtv episode 6 "how to play in the car", pikicast 'when manager goes to sleep', pretty much any of their dance practices except "egotistic" (they surprised us by staying serious with that one), the silhouette game is a great one, too. and their tipsy lives... they've done 3 of them, usually about 20-30 minutes of them drinking, eating, and playing games together eventually, you can also look into their solo stuff... each member has quite a few solo activities. they've all done solo stages at their concerts and the 4 season stages are well worth checking out, even if a bit lengthy. last year's 4 season s/s (spring/summer) concert, each member had about 10 minutes of solo stages. parts of those were used in this video, such as solar singing "despacito" while on the pole. this year's 4 season f/w (fall/winter) concert, each member had about 20 minutes of solo stages... they went all out on these, singing multiple styles, dancing and more. if you watch these, i suggest the mintbox fancam for both wheein and hwasa. mintbox is a hwasa fansite, so it's kind of amazing they uploaded a wheein fancam, too, but they're the only site that allowed subtitles on their videos. it's nice to have for the wheein cam but absolutely required for the hwasa cam, since she's telling a story punctuated by music they've all got official solo songs, each one used a song in their 'dedicated' album in the 4 season project... yellow flower had hwasa's "be calm" that you heard a little of at the end of "starry night", red moon had moonbyul's "selfish" (featuring seulgi of red velvet), blue;s had solar's "hello" (if you react to this, do the version from her youtube channel, solarsido. it's considered the unofficial official mv for the song), white wind had wheein's "25". all of those but "hello" have official mvs, wheein's and hwasa's being directed by park woosang, one of the agency's producers/composers, who also filmed moonbyul's "in my room" video that was glimpsed in the guide here. other than solar, every member has multiple solo songs. solar has a habit of giving the songs she writes to the group as a whole (all three of their songs to the fans, "i love too", "star wind flower sun" and "i am a fan" were originally written by solar, with some changes added by the other members) so much of her solo content is from her 'solar's emotions' series, all covers of songs that are important to her in different ways

For their funny stuff, I always go back and watch [mmmtv episode 6 "how to play in the car"], you can clearly see their personalities and talents while they are having fun. Actually anything from mmmtv, but this is one of my favorite episodes. Pikicast 'when manager goes to sleep' is also very funny, there is so many funny stuff from them...

and then, because that last one on beauty standards was long enough on its own... (...sorry about the bit of ranting), on their versatility... all four members were trained as vocalists, including moonbyul. the unfortunate thing with her was her range and technique weren't quite up to par with the other three... i mean, she could have been a lead or possibly even main vocalist in pretty much any other group she was with, but the three she was teamed up with are crazily impressive. so, she was told to learn to rap (solar and hwasa actually helped her learn how) and debuted as a rapper. because of that and because she kept trying to compare herself to three amazingly high-tier singers, she lost confidence in her own singing capability, even as the other three constantly tried to get her to sing with them (she'd harmonize, but that was about it for years). so, so glad she's finally gotten the confidence to sing again... her voice is absolutely amazing and needs to be shared with the world ...oops, tangent there. bah. back to the versatility! so, moonbyul and hwasa are the group's official rappers, while solar and wheein love to rap basically any chance they get. all four are trained vocalists, all four are dancers and even choreographers. they do a fair bit of their own choreo for most songs and even change stuff up stuff others prepared if they feel it interferes with their vocals too much (which isn't always a good thing, exactly. because of that, most people don't realize just how good moonbyul and wheein are as dancers). they all also participate in writing lyrics, composing music, even aspects of producing for some of their songs. and they work closely with their stylists to get their individual looks down while also ensuring they come together as a group... that's one of the most important things to them, individuality while also being a cohesive whole having that much control over your music is, sadly, an extremely rare thing in kpop, esp for a girl group, who are often just treated as objects and told "here's the song you're going to perform and it'll be sang exactly like this. here's the choreography we made to go with it, learn that exactly". rbw, mamamoo's agency, on the other hand, tries to encourage creativity in all their artists. while still trainees, they learn to write lyrics, to compose, to choreograph and more. and if they seem to like it, the agency lets them do more of it. (hwasa's solo "pink panties" came out of one of these projects. she had to take an existing song, keep the music, but write the lyrics herself. so, "blurred lines" became... a song about what underwear to wear today...)

Honestly they all can speak basic english and could understand more than they lead on, they just lack the confidence. You can see in some english interviews they'd show understanding of the questions even before the interpreters did their job but they still waited for them to translate the questions. STAN QUEENS

I think that it is also because they don't want to misinterpret something before the interpreters are able to clarify it. Their best English, outside when they're having fun, would be when they sing songs that are typically sang in English. They also have learned other languages including Spanish, Whee In knows the fundamentals & enough basic Sign Language to be able to communicate with deaf fans.

For the competition show it's called Immortal Songs 2. They've been on the show 13 times and have won 3 times (Maybe even 4, idk I forgot). IS2 is a show where a group of artists do a rendition of legendary songs from the artist featured on the show or in recognition of the artist who had already passed. Each artist (or group: Mamamoo) compete with each other in front of an audience of 500 who decide the winner of each round by clicking a button they have if they liked the performance. The performance with the highest points goes to the next round and so on. They almost won the very first time they appeared on the show but lost in the last round. They just recently recorded an episode that is scheduled to be aired early next month so I'd recommend you watch their previous performances. Some popular ones are Delilah, Wonderful Confession, Road to Sampo and Love or you can watch their Immortal Songs Medley. You did great pronouncing Moonbyul's name btw but if it makes it easier you can call her Moonstar. Same with Hwasa's name. With Wheein, It can be pronounced as Wee in (there's even an inside joke with Wheein's name being once you Whee in, you can't Whee out.)

Dear JenJenEntertainment I agree with the words of Mamamoo's agency (Rbw). because we know the kpop industry there is very difficult to be famous. especially if it's not tall, not pretty enough, and not slim. Actually the Mamamoo agency doesn't say that Mamamoo is ugly. but there are still many girl groups who are prettier than them and tall. because in Korea it is very difficult for famous idols if they do not have such standards. unless the idol is in a big agency. but mamamoo got through all those problems now I'm very proud of them😢❤

Their company (RBW) gets a bad rap but in reality MMM would not even exist and would not be the same loveable group we know today if it wasn’t for them. RBW and its CEO encouraged all 4 members to be themselves and have an actual part in their music as opposed to most Kpop companies’ rules to restrict their idols’ creative freedom. Solar says her company told them that, but they were only stating what the majority of how S. Korean’s think. Beauty standards especially in the Kpop industry were against MMM at first and sadly, even now. RBW knew this and played to their strengths: live vocals, charisma, creativity: writing/composing/producing/etc. They purposefully chose Solar, Moonbyul, Wheein, & Hwasa bc of their actual TALENT, artistry & ability to have fun on stage. Also, their chemistry with the audience and each other is unbeatable. You can feel how genuine they are.

The MAMA performance is also really good and please check out their B sides! Oh and funny fact! Mamamoo are such amazing women. I think the reason why they have such a massive female audience is because they are really inspiring and really had to fight their way to the top. They may seem super underrated internationally but from my understanding they are absolute powerhouses in Korea. They also paid off their trainee debt in record time all through extremely hard work.

On Queendom, the other groups felt that MMM shouldn't be there as Competitors but she be there as Mentors. When Park Bom Noona had PRESCRIBED medicine shipped in from America [The medication is/was illegal to purchase in SK] it caused an inquiry which several years AFTER the initial inquiry became a Scandal. Instead of protecting Park Bom Noona like a GOOD CEO would/should do, he did little if any actual protection allowing her name & reputation to get shot. [*cough* F*** YG *cough*] He eventually put out a BS response. Then in 2015 they made a surprise performance [MAMA 2015] which, majority of the Blackjacks thought was the kick-off to a comeback, however following a long-term hiatus, Minzy departed the group in April 2016, while the rest of the group disbanded later that November. Though CL and Sandara Noona remain signed to YG Entertainment, Bom's contract was not renewed. Their final single "Good Bye" was released on January 21, 2017 in which YG wouldn't allow Minzy to have any participation in. [*cough* F*** YG *cough*] Cut to the controversies of this year, which majority of the Blackjacks [as possibly were other Fandoms] were elated that YG has what is coming to him. HOWEVER, practically everyone is Skeptical AF because while "yeah" both YG & his brother had stated that they're stepping down from all positions & CEO Positions, YGstill has significant shares in the company [tmk they haven't sold any of them nor given them away] with YG still listed as "Owner" with ~19.07% shares. The next highest Shares belong to the company Naver with 9.14%.

Even though RBW said that about them, RBW is one of the best companies. They respect Mamamoo, they actually treat them like humans. They started off as an unknown company, and Mamamoo were their first group. Also, Hwasa doesn’t fit the Korean beauty standards and they didn’t kick her out of the company for being “too fat”, I respect them for that. There are three or more live "Waggy" performances, all of them pretty funny. NihonSaranghae has created parody lyrics for at least half a dozen of Mamamoo's music videos, all of them hilarious except for "Paint Me", which is hilarious and touching enough to bring tears to your eyes. Yeah their performances on Immortal Songs 2 are all good My fav is Road to Sampo Also their appearances on You Hee-yeol's Sketchbook are very good since again they are almost exclusively performing with musicians on stage They and Hwasa perform a couple Latin/jazz influence songs on this show which is not a competition show. One of my favorite live performance, since it is a VERY different, is a redo of a 2000 techno-dance-pop song from a Korean male/female group Space A, It is from another competition show called SugarMan (which I think they won at least 1 of the 2 times they performed kzbin.info/www/bejne/pmrWenZrgclohtk It doesn't really display their vocals but Moonbyul has a couple of very cool rap breaks (one while Solar is singing) that are way to short! Have fun listening to their stuff

oh, i always forget about sugarman, somehow. they were on it three times (well, twice as a group, first time was just solar and moonbyul) and they won all three times you're right that it doesn't display their vocals, but it's still a really enjoyable stage (all three are) sketchbook performances are always top-notch, partially because the show has the best sound system i've ever heard in any tv show. i just urge a bit of caution with it since it's owned by kbs like immortal songs is, and they're known to go on random copyright strike binges, though i haven't heard of that happening in a few months

@@kalaksed Easy to forget since it is "cable" as I recall and not that popular. I do like the diverse age categories of the audience. Yeah the copyright strikes are fickle and at one time JTBC (Sugarman) was/is? very problematic. So I believe that with both Sugarman and IS2 that people (maybe not you) get confused with the fact that multiple songs/ performance dates are often part of one "competition". I like their version of SexyMan since for me it is about the most different style that they have performed.
