Despite the title, this movie was filmed almost entirely in my hometown of St. Louis. In fact, as a kid I lived about 2 miles from the bridge they used for the Brooklyn Bridge (it was called the Chain of Rocks bridge and connected Missouri to Illinois over the Mississippi River). The theater where Snake meets Cabbie is called the Fox Theater and was closed and run down at the time of filming (it was restored in the early 80's and is absolutely stunning). Grand Central Station was "portrayed" by Union Station in downtown St. Louis (it too was completely restored and renovated in the mid-80's and is now a major tourist attraction). Funny story----when John Carpenter was here filming he was interviewed by a local news station. He was asked why he chose to film in St. Louis instead of New York and his answer was "because New York wasn't run down enough". Ouch! LOL

😎👍 Beginning with "Follow Me Boys" in 1966 all the way through "The Fox And The Hound" (which came out only a few months before "Escape From New York"), Kurt Russell was mainly thought of by most people as the star of a dozen or so wholesome G-rated Disney films. This was the movie that established him as more of an adult action star. "Used Cars" (1980) is another fun quirky movie he stars in that is also noteworthy for being an early effort by director Robert Zemeckis.

Just watched your review on "Escape From New York," and I couldn't agree more about Kurt Russell's iconic performance as Snake Plissken! The movie's unique aesthetic and John Carpenter's synth score make it an absolute classic. It's a trailblazer that influenced dystopian films and even video games. The ending is thought-provoking, and it's a movie that doesn't spoon-feed you answers. While it's hard to pick Russell's best role (he's been amazing in so many like "Big Trouble in Little China" and "The Thing"), Snake Plissken is definitely up there. Also, anyone who enjoys this should definitely check out the sequel, "Escape from L.A." It's not as groundbreaking but still a fun ride! Keep up the great work, Jen!

The funny thing about Kurt Russell is that I don't know if he has a signature most famous role - he's just super-reliable and charismatic and you can trust him to star in basically any genre. It's great that "For a Few Dollars More" is coming next for you because Snake is very much a sci-fi version of the kind of character Clint Eastwood plays in the Spaghetti Westerns - plus both movies have the great Lee Van Cleef! Before he got established as a director himself, James Cameron worked on the photography and effects for this movie. He used a lot of ingenious low-budget tricks; the shots that look like a 3D computer simulation of New York are actually just a real miniature model with all the buildings outlined in glow tape. There's a deleted scene which was meant to open the film, showing Snake pull off a robbery - stealing blank credit cards - and then getting captured and watching his partner get killed. They cut it because it's more mysterious and badass to meet him stepping off the prisoner bus. You should definitely watch "Air Force One," as it's a really great time - perfect 90's action goodness with a great cast - plus another, similar 90's action movie on a plane which does star Kurt Russell: "Executive Decision."

YES!!!!! My favorite Carpenter film and in my top five overall. While watching I was wondering if you'd pick up on some of the nods to Clint Eastwood and his westerns. The way Snake speaks like Eastwood's characters in those movies. Also, the actor Lee Van Cleef, who sends him on the mission, was another fixture of said westerns that you'll see soon enough if you continue watching those films. The DVD has a cut sequence that was to start the film that had the heist he was a part of. The sequel with Carpenter and Russell is fun, but IMO has too many of the same story beats as the first. It's hard to pick one Russell film. He's been acting since he was a child. His first was with Elvis, he did several for Disney, like "The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes". He truly got noticed in his first movie with Carpenter, the TV movie "Elvis" where Russell played the title character.

Fun Fact: John Carpenter had to fight to get Kurt Russell the part as Snake, since he was mostly known for his career in Disney films. The studio wanted Charles Bronson, but Carpenter felt he was too old at the time.

The first animal name that came to mind, when you asked what yours should be, was Kangaroo! Lol Originally I thought it was too dumb and wasn't going to leave this comment... but thinking more about it, you are kind of jumpy, so maybe it's perfect??? 😂

Out of all the roles Kurt Russell has had and characters he has played, he admitted that his favorite of all was Snake Plissken. He is also probably the most iconic and influential character Kurt Russell has played as the video game franchise "Metal Gear" was inspired directly by Snake Plissken. There have also been references in pop culture to "Escape from New York" in movies like "Cloverfield" and even in "The Walking Dead" as well as the spin-off series "Dead City". Escape from New York is absolutely my most favorite movie of all time since I was a child, I have literally seen it over 1,000 times as I watched it every single day for years. It was my obsession. As well, I am from the St. Louis area where the majority of it was filmed and a lot of the places you see in the movie are still standing today, including Union Station where the President was onboard the train, the grand hall where the gladiator arena was and even the "69th Street Bridge" which was actually the Chain of Rocks Bridge crossing the Mississippi River. This movie is so embedded in my soul that I cannot imagine my life without it. Every time I see it or hear the soundtrack, it transports me to a special places that just lives in eternity. Snake Plissken deserves his own open-world "Escape from New York" video game. He was supposed to have his own game released several years ago called "Snake Plissken's First Escape" but the project was cancelled due to unknown reasons. All is not right in the world without Snake Plissken. The world deserves an Escape from New York video game.

A truly phenomenal movie, and a favorite of mine. Plissken is an outstanding character. Have you had his movie "Soldier" from 1998 suggested yet? It's sci-fi too, and one that seems both underrated and a tad overlooked by most people, but is a really great movie too.

If you haven't seen it yet, check out Carpenter's ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 (1976) not a horror movie but one of his best IMHO.

I'm pretty sure this movie was a huge part of my mental development at 5 years old...explains a lot. Lol I just realized how much this and Aliens has in common. Both are horror movies with just enough action for people to mislabel them 🤷♂️

Donald Pleasance, who played the President, was in many excellent films during his long career, and you may be tickled to know that he played Blofeld in _You Only Live Twice._ Adrienne Barbeau, while in many horror flicks, first came to fame in the long-running, 70s sitcom _Maude,_ in which she played the main character's daughter, Carol. _Maude_ was a spin-off of _All in the Family,_ and starred the great Bea Arthur in the tiitle role.

*Not to forget : Donald Pleasence starred as psychiatrist Dr. Loomis in John Carpenter's HALLOWEEN (1978) and four of its sequels. Beside John Carpenter's ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, Pleasence also starred in John Carpenter's PRINCE OF DARKNESS (1987)...* 📀🎬📽 🔥🔥😈🔥🔥

It's hard to imagine now, but when this movie came out, Kurt Russell was still considered a goody-goody former Disney star (as in his "Dexter Riley" series of college comedies and family TV shows), so it was with initial skepticism that we watched his bid to become a gritty action hero. Needless to say, he sold it big time. This movie was great fun to watch at the theater when it was new.

Snake Plissken is a badass character, with a take no prisoners attitude! Never revealed, it's been implied that WWIII broke out in 1985, as Russia launched a sneak attack against the United States, destroying every city on the East coast except for New York and Washington DC. New York became a maximum security prison in 1988. In 1987, a year earlier, Snake joined the US Army and became part of several rescue operations. The Russians then launched a deadly nerve gas in a small town in Nebraska, the home of Plissken. His mother, Father and everyone else died having been exposed to the nerve toxin. Snake lost his eye, causing him to wear the iconic patch. In 1991, he became a famous outlaw. The rest. History.

As somebody will have pointed out, I love that KR does the entire movie with a Clint Eastwood voice, then he does a John Wayne voice for Big Trouble In Little China. Never take a John Carpenter movie too seriously.

This is the role that made Kurt Russell an action movie star. So many great actors appear that it's difficult to name them all, but Adrienne Barbeau, James Cromwell, and Ernest Borgnine are the biggest ones. It's interesting to see these futuristic movies that are now in our past. For a great action flick with Kurt and Sylvester Stallone is "Tango & Cash", which I highly recommend.

Yes, this was a big hit in the theatres, I saw it opening day. Everyone was making Plisken quotes & jokes. This definitely was an iconic role, references to Snake still to this day. I'd also say Stargate was another of his Iconic roles. On a less iconic note, his first role (uncredited) was Kevin in Dennis the Menace (1962) tv show. lol
