It was a masterstroke how John Carpenter could transform Kurt Russell from a young comedy actor from Disney films in seventies to full-on Hollywood tough guy in eighties. An eye patch and a hard man voice...and he's good to go.

I was lucky enough to watch a remastered version of this movie last year at the Drafthouse when they were doing a John Carpenter marathon. It was such an awesome experience compared to only ever seeing it on TV.

I absolutely LOVE that John Carpenter beat when The Duke first appears in his dope ass pimp ride hittin' switches with the chandeliers swinging. Carpenter was so dialed-in and ahead of his time with his soundtracks, he deserves all the praise.. just a legend-tier visionary and musician.

I first saw it in the 90s on BBC2, probably the same time as you. I think it was part of the Moviedrome series hosted by Alex Cox, where they showed films in widescreen. Should have recorded it at the time as I bought it later from Our Price (long gone) as a grainy pan-and-scan video that looked awful. Still watched it about 50 times though because it's such a classic cult movie. It feels, to me, like it could fit in the Mad Max universe. Has a similar mood and atmosphere to The Road Warrior, for sure.

Saw The Thing on TV one night at around 12 years old and immediately fell in love with it, saw this one on the same channel the next day, as it was another Carpenter movie I hadn't heard of, that music immediately froze me to the sofa and I wanted more once the credits rolled. This one is definitely somewhere in my top 10

scrolled all the way down the the first video on this channel last night and found Ian and friends making a review, no Gary? did you guys decide to do this together or was it Iain's idea? hope you both carry on for another 10 years because the chemistry between you both works really well, Gary more reserved with the ability to articulate what I'm thinking about the movie, and Iain can cut through some of the plot holes and beats making me laugh with his own take. proper good telly.

Cheers guys. Nice one. I understand why this film gets love and respect. So much talent, so little budget. John Carpenter is one of my all-time favourite Directors. I would argue that Dark Star is better than 2001. The Thing has yet to be surpassed. Precinct 13 is perfect. Halloween is legendary. Sadly, Escape from New York does nothing for me. Had Escape not given Kurt Russell a new career, I would forget I ever saw this film.

Honestly I enjoy some of Kurt Russell’s Disney films like “The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes” and “The Strongest Man in the World”. They are wholesome fun. With that said, Kurt Russell has proved he can play wholesome (in his youth, anyway) and tough gritty movies.

Great review as always guys, and classic film indeed, there's no doubt about it! I'm not sure how to feel about those rumors about new sequel/reboot being in development, i'd love to see Kurt playing Snake again, but i think maybe it's better for it to not go into production. Besides, most of the rejected scripts for remake were pretty good (and actually some of my favorite unproduced remake scripts), so if it gets made, the new film will probably end up not turning out as good as it could be, as it often happens with something that was in development for so long.

@@tunglam8210 the sequel made the character a bit of a joke… as for remake, I’ve heard it has potentially changed to prequel? Then again, they’ve changed their mind so much over the years I doubt anything will happen! I’d love an Escape From New York video game (Metal Gear not withstanding) - there’s a new Robocop game with an 80s retrofuturism vibe… I can totally see Snake coming to the PS5!

Fantastic...! I love this movie!! one of my favorites of all time being directed by my favorite John Carpenter!!! Everything about this classic gem is spot on. Actors, story, music, underrated SFX ( A young James Cameron was involved ). I have the theatrical poster on my wall to this day. "Snake" Plissken...one of the most iconic characters ever. Its been part of my cinematic life since I saw it @ the cinema in 1981 in San Francisco, Ca. One item of humor... with the fate of the world @ stake...the formula for "Nuclear Fusion" in the future is on a cassette tape...Beautiful!!! WTF the music is the same from Beverly Hills Cop II...that's funny!!!! A couple of last points, again great casting, but one question..."Cabbie", he's so happy in NYC...what crime could he have committed to get there.
