DS9 begins! Time to get my unopened complete boxed set off the shelf; it's been waiting there for five years. I sporadically watched episodes of DS9 over the years and liked how the series ended, so I decided to get the complete series (7 seasons, 47 DVDs) to take in what is considered the most expansive Trek vision of a 'city' in space. I just had to wait for someone to watch it with! ;-) A recurring character is played by the actor who portrayed the killer in 'Dirty Harry.' While you wouldn't recognize him under layers of alien make-up, his voice 'shines' through. I remember when Dirty Harry came out, I read in the Hollywood trades that this actor had trouble getting non-psychopathic killer roles because he had done such a convincing job in Dirty Harry! He also played a brief but for me memorable role in 'N.Y.P.D.' a very underrated 30-min TV police drama that ran for a couple seasons in the mid-1960s. He played a criminal who steals a detective's 'shield' (badge) during a robbery, and starts using it to cause trouble in NYC. At the end of the episode when the shield is retrieved, he snarkily comments that the shield number stinks, and that it wouldn't even get you on the subway. What a great line! Jen would also like the episode 'Fast Gun' in which another detective decides to approach a cop-killer one on one, and as he approaches he has a deep inner monologue, the kind Jen likes! This same actor, Robert Hooks, later played guest roles in some shows I really liked. In 'WKRP in Cincinnati' he played a prosecutor bringing a case for theft against the DJ Venus Flytrap (Time Reid), and in Seinfeld, he plays the Dad George seeks out to watch Breakfast at Tiffany's with. Okay, enough reminiscing. Let me unwrap DS9!

Nuance, Feeling, Deduction, and Debate decorate the halls of Star Trek like shining tinsel. Even a dire enemy was someone you respected, felt for, and could endeavor to save. 15:47 "They've humanized the Borg to me now in a way that's so unexpected..." One of the marks of a good Star Trek episode is that it poses and examines dilemmas that have no clear answers and leave us wondering, long after the episode ends, what the right thing to do would have been and what we would have done if we were there. The best are the ones that make us break down our previous assumptions and stereotypes, forcing us to see what we thought were monsters as people or what we thought were necessary evils as potentially optional, voluntary, and avoidable evils. That leads us to question not only the morality of which choice to make but also the morality of how we frame those choices. This is one of the best Start Trek episodes.

@TheNoiseySpectator3 күн бұрын
I understand why. Star Trek episodes that are not just good, but actually Great contain some plot element where the antagonists or the protagonists learn about the others and what it is like to be them. That is what happened with Hue in this one. Too bad that as a matter of policy the Borg would have destroyed his memories and individual, irrelevant ideas. We can be sure that is what happened to Hue, since it is also what happened to newly assimilated individuals on which the Borg prey. ..... Say, why didn't Hue revert to being the person he had been before he was assimilated? 🤔
@TheNoiseySpectator3 күн бұрын
SPOILER ALERT. @MattWhite I don't think the two stories neccesarily conflict. On the question whether they should have sent Hue back the way they did, I agree with you. I waffle about whether it was right or not. The Borg are very dangerous and a huge threat, but I lean towards what they did because it's very "star trek." Star Trek is about exploring, running into species that are different, and not judging that difference but trying to understand it. They didn't attack the Borg by sending Hue back, but they did offer an "alternative" to their way of life.
