Not everything can or needs to be The Godfather or Shawshank. Edit to add: I think a big part of the hate Waterworld and The Postman get is because they came shortly after Dances With Wolves with other high rated movies like Field of Dreams, Untouchables and A Perfect World giving Costner a somewhat 'serious actor' reputation.

Even then, down by the shore it would still be sea level. A far bigger issue with the film is where all this water came from - if you did melt all the ice on the planet, sea level would only rise by around 200ft. There'd be plenty of dry land remaining. ^_~

* The rumor about how evolution worked so fast on The Mariner, is because it wasn't evolution. He was a product of genetic engineering. When the government realized that all the snow and ice at the north and south poles were melting, and what would happen as a result, they quickly put a black project in motion to develop human beings that can breathe underwater. The Mariner is merely the sole survivor of that black project(or, who knows, perhaps there are other survivors out there of that black project). There were nuclear submarines, but eventually even they ran out of power, but they ran out of food and water long before that. * At the end of the movie, I think they were implying that the water was receding, albeit, very, very slowly. Which implies that whatever caused the polar caps to melt in the first place(perhaps a weapon of WWIII or something) was no longer heating them in such a way, allowing them to return to their normal pre-flood temperatures. I think the film was also implying that The Mariner would return, and visit from time to time. There might also be more baddies out there besides just The Smokers. Don't worry. I know they'll never do a sequel.

However, Waterworld is so much more than that. It's too dismissive to compare this movie to Mad Max, especially as that was a major result of it's box office bombing. Waterworld is an incredible piece of cinematic history, displaying a terrifyingly beautiful scenery of endless ocean. Few scenes don't age well in this monumental project. Not to mention the fact the movie was completed is miraculous, given all the difficulty shooting on the ocean proved to be.

‘Family friendly’ - the only criticism that I recall was the opening sequence involving drinking recycled urine. Kind of killed the movie for a lot of people. A little too realistic. I enjoyed it then, less so now that CGI easily tops most of the practical effects in the film. Costner also got a lot of hate for being left of center w/r environmental issues (and indigenous peoples).

The Universal Studios Hollywood live show of Waterworld is great and can be watched on KZbin from people who recorded it however being there is even better.

I don't think it was a big flop. I know it was very expensive and a production nightmare. The box office wasn't great, but it did well on home video and I'm pretty sure it's made some money over time.

In this post-apocalypse there's a device that lets you filter all impurities from your urine but doesn't let you filter out sea salt? Seems like an excuse to get someone's pee fetish into a scene. This was the time when Tom Hanks had to pee in every movie. Apollo 13 (1995) also had a pee scene.

Mad Max on Sea. I love this film. It was really only a considered a flop because it was (then) the most expensive movie ever produced and the box office only took half what it cost to make. It was still the biggest selling movie that year. It's way better than 9 out of 10 movies that get made now.

HeyJen, yes, anytime you film on water, especially at the scale could easily double or triple the cost of filming and that underwater city scene was state of the art CGI at the time and I believe that 30 second or so scene cost several million dollars alone. I was around at the time and it was pan basically because of how much it cost I think people were expecting a lot more for the amount of money. I always liked it even though it’s basically mad max on the water. Still an interesting story and a beautiful looking film. I’m only about halfway through your reaction but I’m guessing you’re really gonna like it. Have a great one.👍

Dances With Wolves, The Untouchables, Open Range, Field of Dreams, Bull Durham, Silverado, Tin Cup, all worthy of a reaction.

Jens has done The Untouchables now, just a few weeks ago. She loved it! It's here on her channel and the fab full length version on her Patreon. There's over 300 movies there! ♥ You should consider checking it out for a month.

Dances With Wolves may appear this year, it's very high in her list on the movie request sit she has and is recommended highly in comments often. I think that film is a masterpiece, is it Costner's finest work? J.F.K. was so awesome too. Jen's film request site is at this address. 👍 jenmurray DOT com

They were one of those great Hollywood injustices, about a film unfairly mistreated as the worst film in history and that is not the case, it is a good, very entertaining blockbuster with great action scenes, very expensive.

YES -- please watch Dances with Wolves. Probably his best film. "For the Love of The Game" is also a nice romantic comedy baseball film I think you'll love.

Great choice, a lot of critics didn’t like it, but I did, thanks for sharing 😊👍✌️🇺🇸

Waterworld was a disappointment, but it gets a lot more crap than it deserves. It made a small profit, but not near as much as expected. My girlfriend and I saw it on opening weekend, and while it was not a complete waste of money, it could have been better spent.

A bad film by most objective metrics, but the vibes are so cool and fun it's actually quite all right and worth to watch.

Oh wow...I thought Enola was familiar...she was played by Tina Majorino, who went on to play Deb in Napoleon Dynamite, as well as several other roles, including parts in Greys Anatomy, Bones, True Blood and Veronica Mars

This movie was over the top and kind of silly, but I always enjoy watching it.

When I saw Waterworld in the theatre, I saw sdomething different. Ther reel that loaded was running backweards. The crashed p[lane took off from deck of the oil carrier.and rose into the sky. They gave everyone a refund and let us leave.
