If you watch Dances With Wolves (1990), I strongly recommend you react to the theatrical cut as a first-time viewer. The Director's Cut is very good, but it ruins the introduction of a key character by showing him too early if I recall.

This movie and The Postman get a lot of hate. I enjoy both movies for what they are, popcorn entertainment without a lot of thinking required. Not everything can or needs to be The Godfather or Shawshank. Edit to add: I think a big part of the hate Waterworld and The Postman get is because they came shortly after Dances With Wolves with other high rated movies like Field of Dreams, Untouchables and A Perfect World giving Costner a somewhat 'serious actor' reputation.

@@tremorsfan That's no longer 29,000ft - in order for the peak of Everest to be the only island, sea level would need to rise by almost 28,300ft, making the highest point on Everest Island a mere 700ft. Even then, down by the shore it would still be sea level. A far bigger issue with the film is where all this water came from - if you did melt all the ice on the planet, sea level would only rise by around 200ft. There'd be plenty of dry land remaining. ^_~

For anyone who is curious: There is a fan-made extended cut of Waterworld called "the Ulysses cut". It's essentially the 40 minute longer TV version, but without the censorship for nudity. It had a few issues (such as unfinished CGI shots), but it fixes a lot of the film's problems story-wise. The Arrow Blu-Ray edition has the Ulysses cut.

* The rumor about how evolution worked so fast on The Mariner, is because it wasn't evolution. He was a product of genetic engineering. When the government realized that all the snow and ice at the north and south poles were melting, and what would happen as a result, they quickly put a black project in motion to develop human beings that can breathe underwater. The Mariner is merely the sole survivor of that black project(or, who knows, perhaps there are other survivors out there of that black project). There were nuclear submarines, but eventually even they ran out of power, but they ran out of food and water long before that. * At the end of the movie, I think they were implying that the water was receding, albeit, very, very slowly. Which implies that whatever caused the polar caps to melt in the first place(perhaps a weapon of WWIII or something) was no longer heating them in such a way, allowing them to return to their normal pre-flood temperatures. I think the film was also implying that The Mariner would return, and visit from time to time. There might also be more baddies out there besides just The Smokers. Don't worry. I know they'll never do a sequel.

Reference. The Exxon Valdez tanker really existed. In March 1989, he crashed off the coast of Alaska. He ran into a reef. More than 200 thousand barrels of oil spilled into the sea. I saw this movie in theaters with my family. I was a kid, and loved the whole movie. It'd still on my Top 100 Favorite Movies List. I didn't know until years later that people considered it a flop. I still think those people are stupid dumb asses. Great Movie. Hell, I still have the book of this movie too. I had the DC Letterbox of this movie on VHS. Lol His other NoName character movie, The Postman, Iis also on my Top 100 list. I have the book to that one too, only in that case the book did predate the movie.

This was filmed in Honolulu, Hawaii and Los Angeles. The Atoll set actually sank multiple times during filming and the actresses Jeanne Triplehorn(Helen) and Tina Majorino(Enola) were bitten by crabs and piranhas so the crew had to pay their medical bills, the film went way overbudget which was part of why it bombed so badly plus Kevin Costner and Dennis Hopper had just recently done "The Postman" and the "Super Mario Bros. Movie" which weren`t that well-received by critics or audiences!

Waterworld got labeled a flop but it eventually made a profit through home video sales and broadcast rights combined with the box-office.

The Postman is pretty good. It is based on a book by David Brin. There is a trilogy based on three books that you might like. Allegiant, Insurgent, and Divergent.

I loved this movie as the ultimate cheesy guilty pleasure; it's a lot of fun to watch BECAUSE of its outlandishness, not in spite of it. The movie didn't take itself too seriously and had a vibe of nutty fun, and my favorite movie symphony by James Newton Howard. And I admit the ending felt very uplifting because of the music.

Hey Jen. The Saint Joe Hazelwood that they mentioned was the captain of the actual Exxon Valdez. For some more Costner movies you might try The Untouchables with Sean Connery, Field of dreams or Silverado. All have great casts and stories.

Dances With Wolves would be a great watch for your channel. Another post-apocolyptic Costner movie that I really liked (though I don't think it did well either) is the Postman, hope you can get to that one sometime soon as well. Thanks for the reaction to Waterworld!

It's unfortunate that many people refer to this movie as "Mad Max on the water/ocean," be it a compliment or criticism. I love this film and have also attributed it as a Mad Max themed story. However, Waterworld is so much more than that. It's too dismissive to compare this movie to Mad Max, especially as that was a major result of it's box office bombing. Waterworld is an incredible piece of cinematic history, displaying a terrifyingly beautiful scenery of endless ocean. Few scenes don't age well in this monumental project. Not to mention the fact the movie was completed is miraculous, given all the difficulty shooting on the ocean proved to be.

‘Family friendly’ - the only criticism that I recall was the opening sequence involving drinking recycled urine. Kind of killed the movie for a lot of people. A little too realistic. I enjoyed it then, less so now that CGI easily tops most of the practical effects in the film. Costner also got a lot of hate for being left of center w/r environmental issues (and indigenous peoples).

I don't think it was a big flop. I know it was very expensive and a production nightmare. The box office wasn't great, but it did well on home video and I'm pretty sure it's made some money over time.

In this post-apocalypse there's a device that lets you filter all impurities from your urine but doesn't let you filter out sea salt? Seems like an excuse to get someone's pee fetish into a scene. This was the time when Tom Hanks had to pee in every movie. Apollo 13 (1995) also had a pee scene.

Mad Max on Sea. I love this film. It was really only a considered a flop because it was (then) the most expensive movie ever produced and the box office only took half what it cost to make. It was still the biggest selling movie that year. It's way better than 9 out of 10 movies that get made now.

HeyJen, yes, anytime you film on water, especially at the scale could easily double or triple the cost of filming and that underwater city scene was state of the art CGI at the time and I believe that 30 second or so scene cost several million dollars alone. I was around at the time and it was pan basically because of how much it cost I think people were expecting a lot more for the amount of money. I always liked it even though it’s basically mad max on the water. Still an interesting story and a beautiful looking film. I’m only about halfway through your reaction but I’m guessing you’re really gonna like it. Have a great one.👍

Waterworld was a disappointment, but it gets a lot more crap than it deserves. It made a small profit, but not near as much as expected. My girlfriend and I saw it on opening weekend, and while it was not a complete waste of money, it could have been better spent.
