When Dell says, "I sure wish I could have met you two somewheres else", it just tears me up every time. Really a great movie (and follows the book(s) really closely. One of the truest and best adaptations I've ever seen). Michael Clarke Duncan really knocked it out of the park in this. RIP, Michael.

Yeah, in the book it tells us that Dell raped and murdered an underage girl, then when he set her body on fire to destroy the evidence it caught a nearby building on fire and killed 6 more people.

Another thing missing from the movie is the fact that Paul was on a Greyhound bus that crashed and he was the only survivor. (I think that’s how his wife died, but it’s been a long time and I can’t remember for sure). And that was his first hint that he’d been given a kind of invulnerability by John Coffey. I think he also says that since John Coffey he hadn’t ever been sick.

In the book, Paul laments killing what he views as empty shells that were briefly possessed by some evil force to do what they did-- he feels that the force moves on to someone else, leaving them to fry an essentially now harmless soul.

Stephen King's book came out in 1996 as a 6 part serialized novel, 1 more part each month. I remember very well the monthly queues in front of the bookstore where I bought it. Only 3 years later the movie was released, which fascinated me just like the book.

I'm 75 years old. I've watched this film more than 20 times. I own a dvd of The Green Mile. I need a box of tissues every time I watch. John Coffey's dialogue at the end, those in his cell when the guards ask him if they should let him go and those he spoke while sitting in the electric chair motivate m to think about the cruelty in this world and my own contribution to that cruelty.

Sam Rockwell is such a good guy! I saw hin in several movies and I love him. This is the only movie he is playing a bad guy, and I hate this guy. But Sam Rockwell is one of the goods! Just watch "Way Way Back" He is a brilliant actor!

A wonderful reaction to a wonderful movie! Like a few others have said, Shawshank Redemption definitely. It's arguably the best movie ever made and Frank Darabont directing Stephen King adaptations are usually masterpieces. But it also hard to go wrong with any classic Tom Hanks movie. Keep it up! :)

In the book King briefly covers why the Chief and Del are on death row. 5. This movie was nominated for best supporting actor and best cast but sadly didn't win. 6. Players in other King adaptations: Jeffery DeMunn: Shawshank Redemption, The Mist, Storm of the Century and William Sadler: Shawshank Redemption, The Mist. David Morse: The Langoliers. 7. Goof: Electricity makes the body contract. Del wouldn't be able to scream. 8. IRL James Cromwell is a vegetarian and didn't want to grill meat for the BBQ scene but was told that in 1935 people actually ate meat so he agreed to have some on the grill. 9. I am not justifying why the first two executions took place in the movie but according to the backstory here is why the men were executed in this movie. Arlen Bitterbuck was executed for killing a man in a bar fight over a pair of boots. Eduard Delacroix was executed for raping and killing a young girl, then trying to cover up his crime by burning her body. The fire was near an apartment building that caught on fire and killed six more people, including two children.

See, the ideal treatment for UTI is antibiotics which, nowadays, are available all over the place. You can get 'em in every hospital, clinic and pharmacy. Not so in the 1930's. Paul didn't know about 'em. It's a good bet his _doctor_ didn't know about 'em. The treatments they had were about as bad as the UTI. Hence, Paul hesitates.

I was building my Stephen King collection when i heard he had a new prison book coming out, about death row. it was one of, if not the only book i was able to buy on release day. I tore through it in 18 hrs over 2 days. I was ugly crying by the end, stayed in my room for an hour to collect myself before coming out for dinner. Heard they were making it into a movie very quickly after. Made sure i saw the movie on opening night. Whole family was bawling. Your reactions have brought all that back just like the 1st time i read/watched. Very well done!

In the novel he keeps the mouse in that far off shed because one of the orderlies is basically another generation of Percy who's become fixated on him and is basically slowly ramping up to kill him-- he doesn't want the guy to get his hands on Mr. Jingles/Steamboat Willy as he's also breifly known in the book.

I would, also, like to put in my vote for "the Shawshank Redemption" to follow this one up. It is no where near as sad but still an amazing movie on the same level. It is also based upon a Stephen King novel as "The Green Mile" is. For a happier reprieve... I'd love to watch "The Princes Bride" with you if you haven't already seen it. Such a Fun movie. I first read these in my senior year in high school, they were released in small parts. Jump about 20 years later, my daughter hated reading but had to give a 1 page at least 300 word book report to the class on any "big novel" as required in her freshman year high school. I gave her these small books 2 weeks apart, the last 3 books she read in a day. I gave all of them to her saying she just read her first novel... and its by Stephen King... she submitted a 6-page book report that super surprised her class/teacher as it dealt w/ very serious and adult situations.

Great reactions, Jen! This is such a touching, heartbreaking movie, there is no shame in shedding tears watching it. Tremendous cast who did tremendous work. Beginning with Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan and all the way through. Even Sam Rockwell (Wild Bill) and Doug Hutchison (Percy) who made everyone hate them. But one person everyone, every reactor, leaves out is Dabbs Greer (old Paul). His bookending of the story was just masterful. His final monologue moves me every time. The thing that I'm most taken with is for each execution Paul is the one comforting the prisoner before the execution. But for Coffey's execution, it's John who is trying to comfort the guards. And during the actual execution, the camera only shows John at the very first surge of electricity. The rest of it is seeing the guards' reactions from Dean to Brutal to Harry to Paul. Showing how the execution is affecting THEM. I've always thought of John Coffey as a variation of a sin-eater. a traditional type of spiritual healer who uses a ritual to cleanse the dying of their sins. The sin-eater absorbs the sins of the people he or she serves and typically works for a fee. Although John takes upon himself the sickness of others, and of course, doesn't work for a fee. Some people have also mentioned him to be an angel. Especially when his defense lawyer says, "It's like he dropped out of the sky".

This movie constantly makes me cry, especially cuz there were never any justice for John. He tried to explain but people misunderstood. Tried to take back the 'loss of their life', but everyone just thought he wanted to take back the murdering.

If anyone can watch this flick show and not get emotional…. I hope I never meet them. This is one of those that will always make me shed a tear. No matter how many times I watch it. It was nice seeing your pupper showing you some affection when you were tearing up. They always seem to know. I did notice him worried about you in your John Wick video as well. You know the scene. You have a sweet boy there.

Thank you for sharing. 🐭 1:16 Adorable.♥ I used to watch the old b&w "horror" films (Frankenstein, Wolfman, etc.) at my gran's when I was around 8, I'd be trembling by the end. 😆 12:08 This style is called magic realism, with magical or supernatural phenomena presented in an otherwise real-world or mundane setting. Another example of a film with this is *Field of Dreams* (1989). Back in 2003, HBO had a truly excellent, big budget drama/supernatural horror series called *Carnivale* (2003 - 2005). It is steeped in magic realism and is very similar to The Green Mile (good vs. evil, healers vs destroyers), it's one of the best tv series ever made, sadly it got cancelled after 2 seasons due to huge budget costs and low viewing figures - but it's still worth seeing despite ending with unresolved story arcs. It's dark, frightening, emotional and totally gripping. Superb ensemble cast led by Nick Stahl and Clancy Brown. You just need to see the 1st episode to know if it's for you or not. 19:39 It is truly horrifying! *hug* 27:15 Aww, how loving. 🐶♥
