@@white-dragon4424 I wouldnt say that entirely... im highly nervous in social settings just like Barkley is (to the point my speech can get garbled, and my brain sort of goes 'playing dead'), like say a neighbor walked down my driveway and i was there and noticed them before they noticed me id quickly walk away to avoid meeting them, but as a real life example when say one of my cats is missing to the point ive become seriously concerned ive gone up to their doors or approached them and engaged with them to find out where the cat might be since the fear of the cat being missing and in trouble is a far more over riding fear than the one of having to engage with a stranger socially... The same would go with if i saw someone being harassed or attacked, or bullied those situations would override my social fear with other stronger emotions that sort of turn it off for the time being... the same way a person can get a surge of adrenaline that lets them do physical things they normally couldnt, its like an emotional adrenaline of sorts.

*_I can’t tell you how many TNG fans from the 80s & 90s saw THEMSELVES in Barclay! As much as we aspired to be more like Picard, Riker or even Data, many knew that the writers wrote Barclay as the self-doubting teenage nerds who were just about to or recently had entered the job market and had to navigate through workplaces filled with older and infinitely more confident coworkers! So the sympathy factor towards Barclay amongst fans was very, very high!_*

One of the things I appreciate about this story is Picard's refusal to just make Barclay somebody else's problem with a transfer; he challenges his senior staff to get over themselves and do the work of cultivating an underperforming officer to meet their standards. I'll admit I haven't seen him in much, mostly just his two biggest roles as Barclay in Star Trek and 'Howling Mad' Murdock on the A-Team, and he seems to have almost exclusively been a voice actor for over twenty years. Barclay is very much autistic-coded, way moreso than either Spock or Data (who are often described as being coded autistically). Whether or not they intended it this way, it's a relatively early example of some very positive autism representation in media. Yeah, he's awkward and has a hard time getting along with the rest of the crew, but with a little encouragement and understanding of those around him he started emerging and then, when things became dire, he slipped into his element and became the hero of the episode. Also: I am the Goddess of Empathy! Cast off your inhibition! 🤣

This is why some of these side story episodes are so important, a lot of reactors skip them, but they still bring up questions we are still answering today. We can compare what Barclay does on the Holodeck to the moral questions of deep faking and ai generated videos, we are slowly finding ourselves in the reality of some of these formerly sci fi story, and we are now having to question it.
@sircracked2 ай бұрын
Yeah, it is interesting and raises some novel/new questions regarding consent. Obviously today we don't view consent as required to have a fantasy about someone, but, is there a point short of the involvement of the actual person (where obviously it IS required) that it should be? How would that even work? Are there equity questions (does someone unliked/unattractive not have the right to even fantasize about a different reality, let alone experience it even virtually?) At the time of this episode, these were all hypothetical, but as you note, that's becoming less true by the day.
@joeb9182 ай бұрын
The consent question is the major one, we should be allowed our fantasies, but the question is should we be able to use to use tech to make our fantasy more real, more tangible than they would be outside of pure fantasy. To recreate these people he had to use the tech that the enterprise has and the computer has to have a lot of data about people to exactly copy their measurements, personality, voice, everything about a person to recreate a virtual representation. I don't think most would be against people wanting to live out their fantasies, it's when you use something to invade their own personal space that the question becomes more problematic. What parts of ourselves would we allow to be recreated down to the exact details to be someone's personal amusement. Should we have the right to what makes who we are, where is the line drawn? Also what sort of effect dies this have on a society that can escape into unreality so easily, why would we want to move forward if we could have every wish catered to?
@flinx2 ай бұрын
@@joeb918 Prior to deepfakes there was also erotic photoshops, fan-art and fan-fiction. The art wasn't a perfect likeness, but everyone knew who it portrayed. Another issue the episode doesn't consider is private vs public access to holodeck programs. Being able to walk in on someone's holodeck program could be construed as reason why people should always keep their holodeck usage SFW. The show writers back then weren't imagining our future where phones and computers get hacked so frequently and content meant to be private gets widely shared across the internet. That complicates the ethics. If we could guarantee our private fantasies remained private, then perhaps enhancing fantasies with technology is more ethical. However since we can't guarantee private content stays that way, when it's shared on the internet real harm is done.
@sircracked2 ай бұрын
@@flinx something about that seems off. If an ethical act is somehow less ethical by the function of someone else acting in a clearly unethical way (ie, hacking, distributing things they didn't create, etc), That puts power with an agent clearly acting in contravention of rules, and that seems like that can't be right. It might be unwise to make records that I wouldn't want disseminated by an outside negative actor, but, surely the ethics of what I do, regardless if it's stolen or leaked or not, stand by themselves.

@Finx, yes, Photoshop fakes have been around for along while and photo retouching and air brushing has been around since long before when it was an actual physical air brush. Photo manipulation has been around since pretty much the invention of photography. With Photoshop it made it easier, but it still wasn’t that accessible to novices. You needed some skill in making it look good, and most were so bad it was simply comical and an obvious fake. Now with the age of deep gaming, there are scores of websites that dozens more pop up when one gets shut down that all you need is an image to upload and it does the rest. And it can be done by anyone with a few clicks and the results are getting more and more realistic.

Program 9 is where Mr. Broccoli watched Jen Murray's Star Trek reactions. 🖖

Dwight Schultz is actually a pretty famous voice actor now, has been for years since his popular roles on Network Television. Loved Mad Murdock as a kid. :)

Barkley, while a throw away character became a reoccurring one thanks to fan reactions at Trek conventions at the time, which some of the writers attended and picked up on his popularity . Said popularity was part "character" and part because of the charming actor Dwight Shultz, who also portrayed a similarity (ok even more) out there character on the popular Action series "A-Team" in the earlier 1980's . Each main character on that show had become something of an icon at the time, and Gen X-ers have a special spot in the heart for their collection of 80's heroes .😊
