My 1st book, a comic, isn't worked on anymore. It was for my class. The two reasons are... 1. I lost it. and 2. I thought people would encourage me and say it was a good idea. But, two people were all like, "COPYRIGHTED NAME FOR MAIN CHARACTER!" The name was Heartgold. I got discouraged and quit the project. Even if I wanted to work on it again, I can't... because I lost it. I love your video, though!

Ultimately, when it comes to creating, do what you like. If you're an author, write what you want to read; if you're a musician, play what you want to hear; as an artist, make what you want to look at. Because no matter what, there's always a risk that you will be the only person who cares. So be passionate.

So I don't know, that's probably gonna sound weird but ... I'm always kinda scared that if people will actually read my book they're exactly going to think that I'm trying too hard and stuff. I don't know, I guess it's because sometimes I catch myself imagining what it would be like if my book really got released and I had success with it? Like, many people have read short stories and other documents by me and I only got positive reactions back. I love nothing more than writing and I would always continue it, no matter if I'd make money with it or not. But because of those thoughts of becoming a published author (what is my biggest dream) I think, I won't make it. I'm normally not like this and I also don't wanna become super rich or so but I just have the feeling that my dream and my book is going to fail because of this.

Successful, not successful, all that's relative. Know why? Cause it's all in how you define success. Success could mean getting lots of money off your book, or it could mean writing a bestseller that everyone loves, or it could even mean simply having completed the book. However you define it, just note my two pieces of advice: one, write whatever you want to, because in the end the book has to please YOU before it can please anyone else; and two, the harshest criticizer of your book will always be yourself, for the same reason as I mentioned before. If you're not happy with it, why write it? You won't be able to cater to everyone's tastes all at once, so write what pleases you, and the rest will be history. Readers can tell when a writer's heart isn't in the book. Believe me, it shows.

Jenna I love your videos. They are all so down to earth and inspiring. I've always been a writer and I've wrote several short stories or would start working on something and never finished or did anything with it due to being a single mother of four. threw of my children are now young adults and have all left home. I am just now finding the time to start writing again and finally focus on my dream of becoming a writer. I've been a nurse assistant for 16 years and I absolutely love my job but it's about time to hang it up and work on getting published. I'm currently working on a book that I started a few years ago. Although I never finished it, it was always in the back of my mind because I know where I want it to go and that it could be a really great story. So I've taken it off the back burner and I've been reviving it and bringing it back to life again. My writing is a lot a better than it was a few years ago so I'm also able to go back and correct mistakes and all that good stuff. I still work but I am lucky enough to have a wonderful fiance who supports my writing and my dream to become a published author so I've been able to work part time. God bless him because Lord knows the crazy hours I spend down in the basement writing and creating new swear words and he lovingly and supportively just leaves me to be. My question is this... how long does it take to be able to quit your day job and write full time after the bucks start rolling in?

I agree with your point about pleasing yourself and the target audience. I believe a writer that loves what they do utilizes their writing to deal with and express their own personal struggles and accomplishments, desires, beliefs and opinions; to help and heal themself and others. If that's not the writer's intent, what's the point in writing? They're just putting down words on paper for money...or no money. This is great advice. If you’re worried that what you’re writing sucks, then just keep writing. Though I have an outline, at times I’ll just wing it. Whenever I write something that I actively dislike, I force myself to keep going until I figure out either a better scene, or a better way to write it. And trust me, when you have a first draft with over a hundred words, it will motivate you to write more than if you have an empty manuscript.

It's funny that I come across this video tonight... I used to do a bit of writing in high school, right? Mostly short-stories/oneshots, with two or three multi-chap projects floating about. Then I stop writing for a few years, look back on most of them, and feel really embarrassed by my old writing (though the dialogue hold up okay), so I'm really hesitant to get back into writing. Just in the last few months though, I come across another writer who fanboyed over one of those old pieces (which I found surprising, since he's the superior writer out of the two of us), and just earlier today I found a piece of fanart for that same story. A little bit of a confidence boost, though I'm still a little wary about writing again...

That is cool. I don't have that kind of fear, but I doo realize that people can have it. I like the idea that passion can help the writer carry through. Passion is something I have. I like how you brought up Twilight. That is a really polorizing series. I like that series in a casual way. I like Game of Thrones, The Hobbit Trilogy, Warcraft movie and Disney's The Black Cauldron. These are all movies or tv shows. They do have thier fans and haters. It goes in a niche of hardcore fantasy. I like it because I am into it. However many won't like it, because they can't get into it. When I write I prefer to go into this niche. If some people like it thats great. But if some don't I won't worry too much.

I don't know if you've heard of the romance-queen from Sweden called Simona Arnstedt, but a few years ago I was at one of her book-releases (she's a friend of mine) and she said the one thing that I didn't understand until that moment: write like you're the only one to read it. That made me think of Michael Jackson and his best selling album Thriller, how it was created. His previous album Off The Wall sold very well and no one thought Thriller would top it. But MJ was determined to make it better. He therefore worked on it constantly, even after the people around him said it was good enough. He didn't want it to be good enough for others, but for himself. Only when he himself was happy he could let go off the project. And that album came to be one of the best selling albums of all times. I realized then that you should trust your instincts, on what *you* feel is right for whatever you're doing, because no one knows your vision better than you, so it's only up to you to decide when it's perfect for *you*. That's all you can do and if people still don't like it, it's up to them. That feeling lies with them and it's their problem. I love Star Wars, others hate it. I hate romantic comedies, other people thinks it's the best genre in the world. You can't please everyone and as soon as you understand that and not just knowing with your head, the doubt will go away, if only just for awhile. I keep reminding myself of that in my time of self-doubt and it works just enough to make me keep writing on my script. Just a tip :)

Questions I would love to hear your perspective on- How do you deal with 1. your family (parents, grandmother etc) reading sex scenes you've written and 2. feeling like people who read your book are seeing you in your underwear (feeling vulnerable when people you know and don't know read your book, or thinking about them reading it in the future) For these reasons, I've thought about publishing under a pen name, but then I feel like I would be stuck in the pen-name-closet.

Very true, great reminders Jenna! However, I have a question regarding stylistic approaches and what to do if your ideal approach is either not popular or not overly liked. For instance, I aim to be a historical fiction author whose work resembles 19th century literature and features figures from the 1800s. I personally adore descriptive narratives and yet I tend to see the industry catering more towards simplistic forms of language and it also seems to shy away from technical terms and highly articulate diction. How do you propose an author counter this? I understand that one's target audience for each particular book most likely determines what approach is most suitable, but how do you suggest handling editors or agents when your book's format might include more elaborate rhetoric? Your insight would be much appreciated!

Kind of off topic, kinda not. What is your view on curse words in YA fiction? My main character is 18 and she uses swear words. Not excessively, but every once in awhile she uses the F or B or S word, ya know? I'm worried that agents/ publishers/ readers etc will want me to completely omit said words, but that just doesn't feel right to me. I've asked someone this question and they told me it makes a character sound uneducated, but then, that means basically everyone I know- including myself- is also uneducated. I'm kind of on the fence here.

***** Teenagers curse, plain and simple. Unless your main character is of the sheltered variety, the odds are she's gonna cuss. Cussing is also fairly common in YA and NA fiction, so I wouldn't be too worried about it. If an agent wants you to nix it, you can cross that bridge then. But I don't see how anyone would realistically believe that a teenager wouldn't drop an F-bomb or two. I grew up in a very strict household, and as I'm sure you can tell by my videos, even I curse like a sailor. Side bar: statistics show that people who cuss are seen as more trustworthy and relatable, so a cussy protagonist is actually more of a benefit than a hindrance. The protagonists in both of my series are highly intelligent. They also both curse, and none of my beta-readers have doubted their intelligence. So, the person who said they sound uneducated might be a bit behind the times ;)

Hey Jenna, Do you have any more books lined up for release? It's been quite a while since your last book

This is a very good one. I never had this problem due to the high self-esteem I have when it comes to my writing. I accepted that there will be haters and lovers of my work. It's life and it comes with the territory. Lol however there's something major that I would like to hear from you. Like what if someone judge your entire book from a sample read or the first two pages of your book. It literally happens to me all the time. Okay, like let's say if the scene has like molestation part in there. They would assume that my book will be that way the entire book and thinks it's an Tyler Perry's story. -_-

***** that's inevitable. Some people are going to do that, and it's unavoidable. And ANNOYING!

Hi Jenna, I only discovered your channel today after someone posted one of your videos in a writer's forum on Facebook - and I'm hooked!!! At the end of your videos you ask for questions to be posted in the comments, so I thought I would throw one at you (question that is). So here goes.. There is a LOT of stuff out there on writing, from the initial idea right through to publication and marketing. I have wasted many a day researching, only to find I have really learnt nothing of value, so my questions is: How do you weed out the crap? What are the important things that every writer should research and what is okay to 'wing it' or forget about entirely?

LOVE YOU VIDEOS! Your're such an inspiration, although you totally made me completely rewrite my first two chapters AFTER I had already written six! ...😑 #KillMe lol can you do a video about getting the main message of your book across with spelling it out. I swear my main message is painfully clear with the events happening in my book, but I fear that people are not smart enough to catch on and will need it spelled out for them at the end.
@JennaMoreci9 жыл бұрын
Darrell Scott You're welcome! Honestly, if you think the message is clear (and your betas agree), then it's clear. Not everyone will get it, just like not everyone will enjoy the book. You can't control that. I have a character that is described as Asian four separate times in my book, and I still had two readers who thought he was white. At the end of the day, we can't control our readers' minds. So take comfort in the fact that your message is painfully clear, and know that anyone who still doesn't get it is just too dumb for your masterpiece--and that's okay :)

Jenna Moreci Thanks so much! :) I think once my novel is published, I may need a Xanax... or two.. or THREE before I read any reviews lol. Keep being awesome!!! Your videos crack me up!
@JennaMoreci9 жыл бұрын
Don't read the reviews. Read the feedback from your betas, improve your novel, but once it's published, ignore the reviews. You can't change anything at that point, and the criticism will only haunt you.

I will say what is working for me. 1 - Anonimity - Adopting a pen name helps separate mentaly people's judgment for my writting from people's judgement about myself, separate my personal feelings from my work and allowed me the freedom to experiment and to fail, cause I can always start again under a different name. 2 - Having other sources of income - When my hability to feed myself and my family is not entirely dependent on others reaction to my writting it really lifts a burden out of my shoulder. 3 - Finding the right people niches and communities. There is a lot of strange and specific communities and lifestyles out there. Don't waste time trying to please everybody or the wrong crowd. Spend a lot of time thinking about what sort of people would enjoy your writting. For me it meant for example moving away from high nose literally circles and engaging in comic and otaku conventions, and also very specific niches like speculative biology fans. 4 - Understand what is wrong and why people dislike it. You have to gather this data. It is because they don't like what you are trying to do or because they don't think you did well? Discover what is missing and train that point specifically. Try to gather valuable feedback partners early on in the process.

Two questions: Do you have any suggestions on how to get started writing? Do you have any specific ways for mapping out characters? Cause I get all you're saying because I have written many story starts and then doubted everything I do. Looking for guidence, as a young teenage writer.

I'm not really that afraid of negative feedback. At least I know my writing evoked some kind of response when I get it. What I really fear is apathy: when I write something, someone reads it, then I ask them what they think about it and they answer, "Oh, it was OK." To me, that's even worse than "this stinks". I can fix stinks, but OK is just... OK.

I have a suggestion for writers who are having this problem. It is a bit unusual but so are writers themselves, unusual... or everyone would be a writer. You know how a lot of authors will do a Self Insert' character in their books? Well here's the deal. You are going to create a character who is a fabulous, wordy, confident, brilliant writer. That character of yours is going to write your book for you... by inserting that character into YOU. Really, get into the head of your character and write the book AS your character. The is aa very meta approach but you will also get a lot of perspective on character perspective doing this. Don't forget though, when you are creating your masterful writer character to make them deep, nuanced, and clever, give them a backstory that supports their writing talent and motivation. It would suck to go to all this trouble to make up a flat 'World-Famous Author' that couldn't actually hold a conversation about thier own personal life... BTW, I can tell you for a certainly, when your famous writer character finished Their Novel, they will never know you stole it from them and put your own name on it... or you can make them your Nom de Plume and publish under their name too, if that's how you want to handle it. Just remember to take their hat off each night when you are done writing lest you forget who created whom...
