Homage, fake, trending or expensive, you buy a watch for yourself. 97 % of the people around you don't care about what you wear on your wrist. Unless you interact with watchmakers every day. If you spend your time watching these KZbinrs a little frustration may set in for you If your budget doesn't allow you to buy a Rolex. Don't buy these, buy these! I would say, buy what you want.

Well said. I watch these videos more like an anthropologists. Human behavior is fascinating. As someone who doesn't give a rat's ass about watches, these watch people are definitely in a cult. No judgment. Just honest truth from an outside perspective. A watch is just an appliance, like any appliance, but the worship, the emotion, the expense, the waiting, the... all of it, is beyond anything other than; cult. A very expensive cult. And watchmakers are laughing all the way to the bank. A cpu circuit board is far more complex than a watch by 1000 fold, yet you can buy a powerful cpu for a few hundred dollars. Damn these watchmakers are price gouging these people into the grave. What a hustle. What a racket. Feeding on those with the most fragile egos. Taking them to the cleaners. Watchmakers, and dealers, are in the "cleaners" business. Amazing.

I agree with everything you said, and I share your anthropologist’s interest. Really glad to have someone who shares my point of view. My perspective is a little different though, as someone who has roots in the watch business. (One side of my family made watch components, the other retails watches). Also, I have worked on a number of smart watches. Here is a question: If it is so easy to take the money from watch enthusiasts, which brands succeed and which ones fail? Do you know the formula?

Nouveau Riche sounds like an insult from the Nepo Babies. Everyone wants to show status. Some people work hard and make deep sacrifices to succeed. They want something to mark their achievement. People who inherit their generational wealth have less need to compensate themselves for their sacrifices. They turn to connoisseurship as status symbol.

On the other hand, an hommage watch lets you test if the more expensive equivalent is the watch that is right for you. I thought I wanted an Aqua Terra but after having bought and worn an hommage AT for a few months, I just got bored of the style. The mistake would've been to splurge many thousand dollars on an Aqua Terra first. I don't regret not having bought an Aqua Terra and have moved on since. I'm just not interested in it anymore.

I did the same, with different results. I bought a homage to the Rolex Sub. After liking the size and weight, I then got the real thing. However, your story and mine, are not what she is talking about. For me anyway, I could have always gotten the real thing. I just used an inexpensive alternative to make sure I wanted it before I got it. It was not a thing I ever thought I would continue to wear if I liked it. She is talking about people who are thinking “If I get this, I won’t want the real one”, and that usually never happens.

Love my $65 (amazon) Invicta pro diver automatic 8976ob. OK, I'm waiting for the watch snobs to chime in with all kinds of negative responses. I've heard them chime in with all their negative glory on other sites. Homage, yes, fake, no. Lots of branding all over it, dial, case, bracelet, no chance of mistaking it for what it is. Best price possible for a Seiko NH35A movement. Watches costing up to $500 use this movement. Yes, I know the more expensive ones are regulated, But mine gains about 7 sec/day. Not bad, really.

Everyone knows Invicta Pro Diver is not an amazing watch. But it’s decent. It has decent automatic movement from Seiko, it has 200m of water resistance and it is really cheap. On selected pieces the quality may vary, so it is recommended to buy the watch from a store, rather than online. If You want to have classic looking diver and don’t want to spend hundreds or thousands of $/€/£ it is a viable option. I also think there is a certain cool feeling about cheap, but functional watches. Some of them look really great and after years of use, you get this confirmation about it - It served me well, I wore it while swimming in seven seas and it was really affordable. Good choice.

"don't buy homage watches"... Why not? You can still flip them if you do grow tired of them - I've flipped five Steinharts without much difficulty and without taking a huge financial hit on any of them. If the choices are having to sit on a waiting list/having to buy additional crap you don't really want to "qualify" for the watch you *do* want or having to pay 10 - 30 percent surcharge on the grey market ... or getting a well made homage right now and for thousands less, I'm not sure why I would choose options a or b. I mean: It's not like we're talking about spending a few hundred or even a couple of thousand more to get the real thing. If we're talking Rolex, it's often a difference in the five figure range. Plus if it's a faithful enough homage you can use it as a test-object to see if the real thing would work for you in daily wear. If it's uncomfortable or if you grow tired of how it looks on your wrist, you probably won't be happy with the real thing, either.

Wearing an homage watch is a good idea in numerous cities these days, where expensive watch brands attract the attention of dodgy individuals: cut your losses! Beyond that consideration, and looking at the terribly bloated prices of prestige watch brands when looking at the actual inputs in terms of manufacturing costs (Rolex is a perfect example), a decent homage watch is in fact the better purchase from a financial point of view. I have a few of these, and happily wear them: why not? I don't care what others think. A well-made homage watch can be extremely reliable, and be more robust (for instance, 904 stainless steel used by Rolex scratches quite easily, as opposed to 316 stainless steel on the much cheaper homage and lower brand watches). Wanting the original version for the sake of a personal craving for overall perfection is understandable, but if all you really want is a similar external styling with generally surprisingly accurate internal clockwork, the homage version is fine, IMO. I would really like to have a Rolex "Daytona", but sticker shock made me settle for a Chinese-made "Parnis" Homage version: it's perfectly OK, is cheaper than a plastic Swatch, and sports a fun Seiko VK-63 auto-quartz movement. What more do you want? Don't get caught up in the money-draining status symbol trap, like most of the present day social media zombies out there. Last but not least, numerous upper market watches have most of their components "made in China" these days: that includes almost everything supposedly "Swiss Made" from Swatch Group.

Is not healthy to align your self worth to the image that corporations, by the use of marketing tools have constructed around industrial goods. A watch is a watch, it sais nothing about you. It is nice and can tell time, everything else is in your mind and is influenced by branding. If people assume things about you based on the brands you display, those are probably people not worth impressing anyway. I don't have any fake watches but I do own a nice reproduction of Le dejuner sur l'herbe by Eduard Manet, does that make me a fake person? I bought a RDUNAE 6105-8000, aka slim turtle, and it's case measurements are identical to the old Seiko, right down to the 19mm lug width. It also has an upgraded sapphire crystal and improved screw-down crown. Months later and I'm still very happy with my purchase.

I reckon it's worth the wait and the patience will pay off.

So much to say about this video… 1) great advice.. (the human race always has to work on delayed gratification now and with watches it is so important) 2) I had the blue transparent Casioak but I found the strap a bit uncomfortable so why now do I want the clear one just because you were wearing it? 😂🧐 3) Kai’s trousers and piano playing were awesome 4) great idea for outtakes of you and Kai as I’m sure a lot of people love the videos you do together as I do.

You only buy a hommage if the watch it pays hommage to either no longer exists or is a watch that is INSANELY expensive. I bought the Crepas after wanting a Longines Frogman. These Longines have been long gone or in a museum. A WW2 relic. Besides, the Crepas has its own pluses like a 1900m water resistance and built FAR better than the original. Or a Rolex MilSub hommage $80k. Get the hommage in that case.

So … I bought a Moon Swatch Mission to the Moon, then I bought an Omega Speedmaster Professional Moon Watch. Then I bought two Scuba Fifty Fathoms (Antarctica and Ocean of Storms) so of course I bought a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms. Do I regret buying the Swatch collaborations? No, they encouraged me to buy the genuine articles. Sometimes buying the teaser can end well. 😊

Excellent topic. I bought a new 36mm (35.4mm) Rolex Explorer 124270 off the grey market and right away noticed how small it looked on my 19cm wrist and in proportion to my 195cm/95kg body. But I kept telling myself that I would get use to it and watching YT vids that validated this mindset. Instead of returning the watch, I decided to keep it and ended up selling it a few months later at a significant loss. I recently bought a 40mm Sea Dweller that I love. It is the perfect Rolex sport watch size IMOP - especially for bigger guys.

Nice one Jenni, that outro would have been great for winding an automatic watch. Seriously some good advice though. I think most of us have fallen into at least one of the situations you describe. I've definitely done the same watch with a different dials but I have no regrets on those purchases but yes maybe that money might have been better saved or spent for some other different watch. Oddly I was looking to get a new cheap older battery powered classic G-Shock square for the last six months or so on a well known internet site and when the price dropped I bought it. It arrived but was slightly different to the advertised watch photos and the box information. Anyway it's a later version that I didn't know about and it's perfect so far and I have no intent on returning it as it was from the US and for the price to return it isn't worth doing. It ticks all of the boxes but it isn't the one that I was hunting down but I'm more than happy with it. Has it killed that original itch though..... we shall see.

Tbh I have a few reps that are close to 1:1 with the genuine watches. These are ones where you can't tell it's fake until you open it. I don't think it's wrong or "makes you fake" as you said. I can easily afford these watches as genuine, but buying a 99% equivalent watch for 5% of the price is not only savvy for someone that buys the watch out of joy, but it's a great trial. Different story as an investment or if you're trying to commit fraud / rip someone off. In addition, many people buy watches for the story or conversation starter. A rep at this level of detail is an outstanding conversation starter - "can you believe they even replicated the steel makeup, weight, and the movement inside?!"... Anyway, just something cool to try it out and not break the bank. The few reps I bought were actually well worth the money because now I know I don't actually like most of those watches that much after having it for a few months (especially the Rolex submariner... I really don't like that watch as much as I thought I would). I would have felt horrible if I spent $10-15k on a watch that I wasn't crazy about. On the other hand, the rep omega aqua terra I do really like and would consider buying the genuine. The world timer Black titatnium is $13K and I swear I almost bought it in the store. I stopped the impulse buy and got the rep first. After having it for a while I do like it, but not for $13k. Anyway... Point is I don't think there's much wrong with owning a rep as long as it's to indulge

I see what you’re getting at with 6 (the repeat watch) but it’s completely at odds with my motivation as a vertical collector, exploring the variety within a model. I think maybe it’s more a case of understanding what sort of collector you are before buying the next watch - do you want a different complication each time, or a different use, or is it just a different dial colour you’re after? I was entirely driven by exploring the range of Heuer (pre-TAG) Carreras, now I’m doing the same with Speedies, so I am very deliberately buying repeat watches, just variations on a theme.

With homages, it depends a lot if you would ever want to buy the original one or not. Also, if its 2% of the MSRP or 20% of the MSRP of the original definitely matters a lot on if the homage is a good buy or not

Yes! I am not rich and don't want to impress people. At best I have 3 really expensive watches. I love watches and the aesthetics of at least a dozen other watches which I will never afford. Most I wouldn't buy if I had the money as they are massively overpriced. There are good quality homages where I can wear a near identical watch for a fraction of the price. Don't care if they break or get stolen. If anyone were to ask me, I am happy to explain my love of iconic watches and how a given homage reproduces the aesthetic. To the people above saying a 'fake' watch tells you a lot about the owner, well yes, I am a die hard watch enthusiast, not a pretender or investor. Note that watch design copyright is not forever and becomes public domain after a period of time and many are just that. The Chinese are doing to Japanese watches exactly what the Japanese did to Swatches. This discussion is akin to moneyed people talked about owning Bentleys and forgetting most of the world cannot afford them and simply do not care about showing rich or successful they are. Also most observers simply don't care.

I am diving into a manageable credit hole to get that final watch. It is historically significant. I am buying a Glycine Airman Purist GL0376 that is almost the same as the original 1953 "DC-4" release, designed for globe trotting pilots with its rotating 24 hour bezel and true 24 hour calibre! In the entire watch world, there is nothing like it! It is as unique as a pink unicorn with yellow polka-dots and a neon glow horn! This is no Rolex for sure! It is better! It is cheap in comparison at far less than 1000 US-Dollars. It will be the watch to take to my end! I am buying it, no matter what!

Interesting that you showed the Seiko tank as an example of an homage, because... I got that one, but before I did I bought myself an homage - that is: an homage to the homage (from IBSO). For about 10% of the cost. It's a close call which of the two watches I like better. The hands on the Seiko are nicer, but that £20 Chinese watch has a better crown and much nicer watchband. The Cartier was not even an afterthought, I don't spend that kind of money on a single watch, ever.

for people wearing fakes attempting to let other's think they're actually wearing a Rolex, well, there is some room for personal growth there. I think we're all pretty much in agreement. (costume parties, and young men's booty hunting exemptions allowed) As for homage watches, well, the Rolly sub is pretty iconic, so now it's like wearing black shoes with a suit. The homage watches fit mostly here, you can buy the level of quality you want or afford. the Glashuette SeaQ is essentially an homage to the sub, and it's practically the same cost as a Rolex. It's a matter of iconic submariner style. As for collecting,(or personal goals) well, there are at least two types, Collectors that want to cover the style, or collectors that want to cover the brand. Brand collectors obviously won't be happy with an homage. but style collectors certainly can be satisfied with an homage.

I would say don't buy an homage if: (1) is an actual counterfeit; (2) is a 1:1 ripoff of the original in everything except the branding/trademark; (3) is an homage of a watch that costs less than $500 (yes they definitely exist); or (4) costs more than 10% of what the real deal would cost you.

This is really simple. Write down the watch you really want. Now presuming you're a mile from either affording it or being able to get it, choose something you can buy now and wear that might "scratch that itch" that you can afford right now. If you said "Daytona" maybe it's a full on clomage, maybe a Seiko chronograph, maybe a Tudor Chrono, maybe a proper fake. Whatever, buy that, wear it. And now do all you can do to get the watch you really want. That's it.
