As we were preparing to publish this video, a representative from Customs and Border Protection wrote in an email: "Trade in counterfeit and pirated goods threatens America's innovation economy, the competitiveness of our businesses, the livelihoods of U.S. workers, and, in some cases, national security and the health and safety of consumers. CBP targets and seizes imports of counterfeit and pirated goods, and enforces exclusion orders on patent-infringing and other IPR violative goods. CBP's interdiction efforts begin well before a conveyance or shipment arrives at a port. Advance electronic shipping information, actionable intelligence, and information sharing partnerships are critical components that enable us to quickly identify, target, and deter the entry of counterfeit and dangerous goods, including illicit drugs, in all operational environments. Advance information is a critical and effective component of CBP's targeting and interdiction efforts."

They lay it all on a blanket and try to sell them as the real stuff. Lots of times it will be 3-4 ppl next to each other selling. Cops just a few feet away not doing anything.

To give him the benefit of the doubt, he did say terminology constantly changes to avoid detection. And that his undercover need to look like fools to actually get a fake. If he seemed like he knew too much a dealer might be hesitant to sell to him. He might be using old terminology on purpose or is using the terminology most prevalent 10-20 years ago. "Epic Fakes" definitely sounds like slang people in the early 2000s would use. The word epic was literally used everywhere. Slang also is different in each state

TIL that Louis Vuitton is a big watch brand, and that Super Clones are called Epic Fakes all within the first 90 seconds of the video. Where did you find this guy? Grey Market watches are refused to service? lol, like you can't just say "I bought that on a trip to ". A watch is a watch and they can be serviced by any decent watchmaker/jeweler. "You need a magnifying glass to tell if it's a clone" and then confidently announces a watch as genuine using his naked eye.
@ccoder4953
@ccoder4953 8 ай бұрын
And from what I've seen of the super clones, even if you have a magnifier you really can't tell. Maybe if you are extremely experienced or have a genuine one to compare directly to, but not even 100% sure then. But otherwise, the quality of a good super clone can be so impeccable, the average person won't be able to tell, even with magnification.
@ionlawrence4401
@ionlawrence4401 8 ай бұрын
Most clones needs to be opened to see if they are real. There are legit brands making Rolex designs with their own branding(Steelfish, San Martin, etc) that matches the Rolex build quality and specs on everything but the movement. The difference is that these brands charge $2-400. A good "fake" has all the properties of a Rolex, but it´s just not made by them. Just like the cost of an LV bag is $20. LV really is making good watches, but they are not a watch brand, and isn´t gonna be counted as such.

I use to take my watches to the authorized dealer for servicing but over the lifetime of the piece that’s more than the watch costs… $200 for a battery!? Did that for a few years till a service tech in Tiffany told me to take my watches to the “watch repair” in the big department store in the same mall. She said, this battery regardless of brand costs $10 and the BS about it only being opened by that brand is to make money. Fast forward 25yrs , Patek, Tiffany, Baumé&Mercier, A.Piguet all go to a local guy who works on my pieces in front of me in a shitty strip mall. He charges 1/10 the price. I’ve gone to him so long that he doesn’t even charge me for battery replacement anymore.

Same here. I remember seeing a video a couple years back where they compared a $900 "Super Clone" Rolex to the real thing under a microscope. Even the movement was spot-on. What was most stunning was that in some places the metal finish on the fake was more fine than the finish on the authentic item. The only thing the fake watch was missing was the wait-list. That video destroyed my perception of luxury swiss brands. I only go with microbrands nowadays and Timex for beater watches.

After the quartz watch came, the industry became a luxury and speculation... They are jewelry pieces made with the highest mechanical engineering, but mechanical engineering is a limited science. All they do is explore the realm of designs and ideas, mixing art with jewelry. However, their price is not justifiable, in my opinion. They are just made for wealthy people-rich people just need to buy nice stuff that poor people can't have. Then, when poor people can have nearly identical things, the rich go mad and send the government after them to maintain their status. LOL... In the jewelry industry something similar happens, poor people can now have lab-grown diamonds or Moissanite, which are just like natural diamonds. And there you see the natural diamond industry constantly attacking the lab-grown market... They just need to justify the ridiculously exaggerated prices with claims of "uniqueness."

This is just embarrassing. He works for the watch brands so of course he's going to lie and misrepresent facts for them. The issue of forced or child labor is a China issue, has nothing to do with counterfeit watches, even Apple and Nike has the issue. Guy is citing a story from 30 years ago about swapping gold for gold plated then claims it's common today so only use authorized dealers - this is no different is Ford claimed only they can fix your car and anyone else will cause your wheels to fall off. The assessment if the watch is real is out of date, good counterfeits today are impossible to tell from real unless you remove the case back.
@sterlingross919
@sterlingross919 8 ай бұрын
Just because that happened twenty-plus years ago doesn’t mean jewelers don’t still do it. It’s pretty common. The other issue with taking a watch to a non-authorized repair location is the second it’s opened by someone unauthorized the entire value of the watch gets wiped out. If you buy a $60k Patek Philippe brand new and take it to a jeweler to get it iced out in $40k worth of diamonds, that watch is only going to be worth $40k.
@TheRealCartman1
@TheRealCartman1 8 ай бұрын

they don't artificially restrict them. they make pretty much as many as people want that can afford them with around 1 million pieces produced per year. they are needlessly expensive and not debating with you on how much they cost or if the price is fair. just that it's not artificial inflation, it's just glam expensive like Versace or Gucci. for artificial restriction you can look to supreme or the diammond trade. supreme makes money off of fomo and people not being able to get ahold of their stuff, diamonds are a market created by diamond profiteers who have massive stores of this relatively useless gem.

The quality control of real watch makers creates massive rejected parts which significantly increases the cost. The precision of all the parts is so high that there is a considerable number of parts (a mechanical watch contains hundreds or thousands of invidivual parts) that are rejected due to minor manufacturing flaws. Counterfeit products can crank out cheap goods because they don't have this level of QC. The accuracy of and Omega (+/- 1 second a week) verses a Sieko (+/- 8 seconds a day) is why the former cost 10x the latter. A cheap knockoff is not only inaccurate, but it will probably die after a few months, and is almost guaranteed to not be as waterproof as an orignal.

what is this guy saying. First of all, the high quality copies are Super Clones, not Epic Fakes, that is a term no one in the industry uses. Also they dont use the same machines, they use similar types, but not the same, as Rolex, Patek, and others have their own custom equipment. Also what he said it not the "Grey Market, that in the Black Market. Grey Market are legit second hand watch dealers, may times Jewelers, selling real watches second hand because they are not authorized retailers. They are actually regulated in the US and most countries (under trade laws they are regulated, they all are insured, bonded, etc), to ensure the watches aren't stolen, and they would not be able to do "mixing", those are underground black market dealers, not Grey Market. And a lot of those things he describes of the black market, hasnt existed in 20+years It is also false that the brands do not like the secondhand Grey Market, Rolex actually encourages it. In fact the largest Grey Market seller in the world is owned by Richmont, a major watch company that owns brands like IWC, Cartier, Vacheron Constantin, and others. Most repair shops are honest, it is very rare to find ones like he describes anymore, not for years. It is a small industry, and everyone knows each other. Also what called "Franken Watches" is not what Franken Watches are. Franken Watches are watches made from mismatched parts by a trained horologist to recycle parts from older broken watches. They are very obviously such watches, and never met a dealer who tried to pass off one as real. For an alleged expert, he knows so little about the industry he is talking about

Here is a story of interest about a fake Rolex watch. Some years ago, I met a UK man living in Vietnam. Back in UK, he had bought a genuine Rolex watch from a second hand shop. This Rolex was damaged and did not work, and he bought it cheaply. He took it to a watchmaker in UK and was given a quote to repair/restore it, however, the price asked was way above his budget. He would wear it on his wrist, even though it did not work. When he moved to Vietnam, in Hanoi, he encountered a watchmaker there and asked if he could repair/restore it and at what price. I recall him telling me the man said to come back in one month, and that he would fix it for free. When he returned, he was presented his genuine Rolex, now working, and most of the marks and scratches had been restored. The watchmaker then showed him 10 more Rolex watches, but they were all copies that he made during that month. He thought the replicas were identical and offered to buy one. The price was just $10. Now the interesting part.... On a return visit to the UK, he showed the replica Rolex to watchmakers in the UK, and none were able to identify it as a copy!! Also in Vietnam, for a mere $4, you can buy replica Zippo lighters. A real Zippo has a lifetime warranty, and it is an actual fact that these Vietnamese replicas are so good, that if they do fail, when presented to a genuine Zippo agent, they can not identify it as a replica and will offer a warranty replacement.

My friend has a Superclone of the same Rolex he owns. Genuine one he keeps in a safe because he's scared he'd lose it in a mugging.

What a joy to watch. It's always wonderful to hear from someone who knows their trade in and out. Truly, there's nothing but years of wisdom and knowledge on show here! Seems like a lovely guy to boot.

This dudes knowledge of fakes ranks right up there with an old guy who claimed to be a watch expert told me "if the second hand ticks it's fake, if it sweeps it's real."

Counterfeit watches are easily stopped when the buyer decides to be clever and pay the minimum shipping fee possible rather than $35-55 for an Express delivery.

Jerseys are the same way. Why pay 200 for one from Nike when you can buy an identical knockoff from China for 15.
