One of several commissions for the Ying Quartet, Jennifer Higdon's Southern Harmony (2003) is a three-movement work for string quartet. The piece both stays true to Higdon's colorful sound world while representing the melodic and harmonic music of the American South. It also represents the fiddling technique found in the Appalachian style of playing.
