I admit that I heard Laura Branigan's version first and always thought it was a great song by a fantastic singer. After I heard Jennifer Rush's version I found that there was something about it that I liked better, maybe because she co-wrote it. Both singers have such powerful voices. Jen's operatic mezzo-soprano voice was the reason I started listening to opera as a teenager in the 80s and I never looked back. she was unique in her vocal approach to pop music at the time, great control, wonderful earthy timbre in the lower range, very powerful and effortless in the higher range. just perfect. at the end of the day you either like this vocal style or you prefer the dions, branigans, madonnas, etc. although I do prefer laura a lot more than dion.

I “missed” Jennifer in her prime-in fact, I only discovered her 2 months ago. I am a big fan of Celine and only discovered Jennifer because I came across Celine’s cover of POL including Jennifer. I couldn’t believe my ears. I’m 84 and have heard them all, from Ginger Rogers to Edith Piaf to Vera Lynn. Then Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, Barbara Streisand, Dusty Springfield, Tammy Wynette, and Bonnie Tyler. Add Gloria Gaynor, Connie Francis, Lauren Branagh, Linda Ronstadt, Rita Coolidge, Celine, Mariah, and Whitney and you have the lineup of the greats right up to Adele and Susan Boyle. But, Jennifer Rush has the all-around best female voice I have ever heard. Her operatic training adds an unmatched vibrato containing depth and texture. And she sings everything: opera, pop, rock, and ballads in English, Spanish, German, and Hungarian. She has written or co-written the lyrics and music for many of her songs, done duets with Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras, Elton John, and Brian May-sorry-Sir Brian May-and performed live all over the world-but not in America, except in March and April 1986 on the Carson show and the Dick Clark Show; that’s it. Yes. If Jennifer had decided to live her life in the US, she would still be in Las Vegas or on tour. It would be great if you reacted to 3 more of my favorites: “Who Wants to Live Forever?”, “Hero of a Fool”, and “Stronghold”.
