Entertainment Tonight did a reunion interview about 3 years ago with Megan Fox and Diablo Cody that's really amazing. They talk about their intent vs. expectations and the incredible disservice done to this movie by the marketing, as well as the timing of this movie in the arc of story the media was telling about her at the time. Highly recommended interview.

Thank you! I definitely need to check that out! I can’t even begin to describe how happy I am that I waited to watch this, because in 2009, I didn’t have any interest in it (for all the reasons you mentioned), and even aside from those, I don’t think I would’ve, or could’ve appreciated it back then. I’m genuinely grateful for the renewed love for this movie, because it absolutely deserves the recognition.

@@movienightwithjacqui It's amazing how bad marketing can wreck a good movie. I hated Bridge to Terabithia when I first watched it because it was completely misrepresented. It was only years later when I began to appreciate it for what it was, dealing with loss and grief as a child. Then there's John Carter [of Mars], the marketing for which still befuddles me to this day. Why remove the "of Mars?" Why pour so much into a movie with amazing visuals and a great cast only to barely let anyone know it exists? Fight Club had some pretty weak marketing too, as evidenced by the fact that my GF at the time had no interest in it for months but when we finally watched it on DVD (one of the first DVDs I ever bought!) she ended up loving it even more than I did. Maybe this wouldn't happen if Hollywood executives had to actually get some sort of specialized degree instead of just "business" or "marketing." They never seem to learn.

I remember the marketing for this movie being mostly the same as you described Transformers. It was a lot of "Hey dudes, come see Megan Fox be hot!" which admittedly was enough to get a younger me to go the theater. But I certainly think that had a negative effect on it's initial release. I remember leaving the theater afterwards not really sure how I felt about the movie because it was a lot more than I expected. I watched the movie again a few years later and appreciated its message of empowerment a lot more than the first time I saw it. If you're looking for more horror-comedy, I'd recommend The Babysitter, Ready Or Not, Tucker & Dale vs Evil, Shaun of the Dead, the original Evil Dead trilogy (moreso Evil Dead 2 and Army Of Darkness than the first Evil Dead in regards to the comedy aspect, but all 3 movies are fantastic), and The Cabin In The Woods (if you watch this, dont read anything about it and just go in completely blind to it for the best enjoyment).

Well, anything that makes people question how they feel rather than tell them, that features women or other minorities, often gets panned, regardless of marketing. Not that the marketing helped it critically, but it still might not have made a huge difference in its reception. It might have! But seeing how people increasingly complain when they aren’t immediately, “effectively” (stereotypically) told how to feel by a movie or show, I am dubious. You’re not wrong about feeling unsure at first, which isn’t a bad thing! We need space for all sorts of stories.

Oh, and if you like horror comedy, give Tucker & Dale Vs Evil a spin.

@@Dan_Kanerva That's kind of a complicated question. The horror community embraces so many styles that "one man's trash..." The obvious short answer is that horror movies are trash because that's generally what Hollywood makes as far as horror movies go. Studios are risk-averse and would rather crap out a tenth Saw movie than something new and genuinely scary. Your best bet would be to experiment with foreign or indie horror.

@@Mage1066One thing is that, for whatever reason, supernatural horror became really popular in the early 2010’s. I find movies like Insidious so boring & not at all frightening. SO glad you watched this! I love that this weird subversive film is getting the love and recognition it deserves. Great reaction and analysis as always! I didn’t see it at the time, but I found the backlash to it to be somewhat misogynistic in tone when I read reviews, so it was always bookmarked in my brain, but I didn’t get to it until its resurgence in the zeitgeist. And I loved it. If horror comedy is something you’re looking to explore, Shaun of the Dead is a classic, Cabin in the Woods is really clever, and the Happy Death Day movies are a lot of fun.

Jennifer's Body is named after the phenomenal feminist song of the same name from Hole's 1994 album, "Live Through This." The song recounts the scattering of a local woman's body parts and in turn the feeling that regardless of a woman's hard work their lives are doomed to be defined by men; our kids, our divorces, and our deaths. Even our successes, in the case of Hole's lead singer - who was accused of letting her husband, *Kurt Cobain,* ghost-write Live Through This before his death the same year the album came out. Also, the events of the movie echo much of the details from the 1995 murder of 15-year-old Elyse Pahler - whose classmates lured her to the woods and proceeded to rape and murder her - supposedly as a means to make their band successful. It took 8 months for her remains to be discovered, and the case provoked the metal band, 'Slayer,' to be sued by Elyse Pahler's parents for their music's apparent influence on the perpetrators. Jennifer's Body is truly a movie that - while hilarious and engaging - captures the feeling many women experience: that men view us as useful and worthwhile only when we are quiet, servile, disposable, and sexually objectifiable.

Horror and comedy usually blend quite well because the follow the same basic rules: they play with expectations, understated/overstated action/reactions, they feed of cliches and tropes and someone needs to get hurt in some way. Slashers and slapstick are just a sound effect away. If you enjoy horror comedies, I seriously recomend Tucker & Dale vs Evil. 2 words: Alan Tudyk.

I haven't seen this movie since 2013. I was 10 years old and realizing that I felt some kind of way about girls that most of the girls I knew didn't. I didn't even know that this movie had sapphic tones to it when I decided to watch it. I watched it just because I had seen Megan Fox in "Transformers" and she was my first serious girl crush. She was in this, so I simply HAD to watch it. I had almost forgotten all about it until this popped up in my subs. I didn't get a lot of the subtlety of the movie, I can see now, and I certainly never expected to see Amanda Seyfried and Megan Fox make out, but I wasn't complaining about it at the time. I was absolutely obsessed with any queer girl romance I could get my hands on, in book or movie form, and the fact that this movie just happened to mildly (to my mind at the time) fit into that category was crazy to me. I think it just got overshadowed by the fact that I found "D.E.B.S." and another movie I won't name because I was WAY too young for it around the same time, and they were more blatantly queer-centric, so I rewatched them a bunch of times and sort of forgot about this movie.

I love love LOVE this movie. P!ATD's music video got me interested, but for years now I am still as hooked as I used to be back then. The entire soundtrack slaps, and I also love the lyrics for Through The Trees tying to the main story. It narrates the beginning of the movie and the end of their story. "All alone in an empty room / nothing left but the memories of when / I had my best friend". It's all about two best friends who grew up together, however one has passed away and the other is just walking through the trees alone. It's just poetic and amazing how Needy and Jenny had a lowkey blood pact as kids and when it broke, Jennifer let herself be killed. Aside from that, there were many references to r*pe with the whole band thing. So it's actually so great to know the thing that kept Needy going was getting revenge for Jennifer (while "In The Flesh" plays lmao). I'll never forget the studio for marketing it for straight dudes 😭😭 thankfully now ppl are seeing the light

I saw this in theaters because I was working at one at the time, so I was kind of watching everything. Not sure if I would've paid to see this based on the storyline, unless I got wind that Diablo Cody wrote it through advertising. I just happen to notice her credit on the poster at work, so that peaked my interest (In addition to Megan Fox 😏). So based on that, I expected it to at least be entertaining going in, but like you, I was surprised at how much more I liked it than I imagined i would. I had a similar experience with Juno. Love both movies, but being in my late twenties around that time I was fairly removed from a lot of the pop culture references. But I know good writing and acting, and Megan Fox definitely deserves credit for more than being hot. Good acting doesn't lie in the ability to transform your entire character, and she's no slouch. This was also the first thing I ever saw Amanda Seyfried in, so it's been great seeing her body of work grow too. Fun movie. It feels like Diablo had fun writing this. Still applying her talent, but not taking things too seriously. Cool reaction Jacqui ❤

And not just because Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfriend do, to paraphrase Tom Lehrer, "arouse my prurient interest," but as a fan of the horror genre I love seeing new and interesting takes on it, and this is one of the newest and most interesting takes I had seen in awhile. It's fascinating on so many levels, and you can really dig into some of the ideas it presents and find a surprising amount of depth. . . but you can also just sit back and watch the fun horror-comedy with lesbian overtones if that's what you're in the mood for. It's a rare film that can feed both your "jock brain" and "nerd brain." 19:09: That's a common misconception, but it you pay close attention, Needy and Chip had already had sex at least once. He mentions picking up "more" condoms at one point, and I think there are a few other subtle hits that this isn't their first time. But the way it's shot, slow and romantic and just a bit fumbling, is the way "first times" tend to be shot, when in reality they're usually a LOT more heavy on the awkward than anything else. 23:32: That scene *blew my socks off.* I love good subtle acting, conveying things with just the right look, expression, or shimmer in the eyes ("Soldier," with Kurt Russel, is an absolute masterclass in this sort of thing). And what Megan Fox is doing here. . . anyone still think's she a crap actress who only gets roles because "hotness" after seeing this is WRONG. That realization, "this is my life now." Yeah, when she's "full" she's got all this awesome stuff, but she'll be a murderous cannibal for. . . how long will she live, exactly? Can she die of old age anymore? Even if the "good" in her is dead, and she doesn't actually feel empathy or remorse anymore, she's realizing that her life is going to be nothing but blood, death, and murder. Whatever hopes and dreams she had, they're gone now, because she has to live with this. I feel like that can be symbolic for a whole huge number of things. 34:30: Jennifer died as herself. Finally "read" Dracula earlier this year (as an audiobook, took several runs at regular reading it could never get through it), and when Vampire Lucy is killed, they note that she looks more beautiful dead than undead. Vampire Lucy was sexy and seductive, but animalistic, and horrific because she was a complete inversion of her regular sweet, kind, genuinely loving persona. In death, the artificial glamour of the undead fades, leaving just her natural beauty, as a sign that her soul has been saved. I think that's what they were going for here, more or less. Jennifer can now rest in peace. 39:10 -- 40:50: *MIND. BLOWN.* Excellent horror-comedies to check out if you haven't: Tremors, Tucker And Dale Vs. Evil.

Really glad you enjoyed this film so much! I saw it a few times in the theater and then many times since on physical media. One thing that confuses me is why they use Hole's "Violet" instead of "Jennifer's Body" as it's from the same album and the lyrics are roughly what this story is based on! But yeah, amazing film! I hope you watch more horror films (I'm not a jump scare fan either... jump scares don't equal horror and there are many horror films that don't use that overused and lazy move).

More solid/classic horror comedies (like J's Body, the rare ones that are actually successful at being both horrific AND funny) for your future consideration: Re-Animator, Evil Dead 2, American Werewolf in London, Housebound, Teeth, Barbarian, Tremors, Cabin in the Woods, Shaun of the Dead... It's not a list that goes on and on, as there seem to be way more of these that don't work on either level than there are that do both well.

I know this is an old video but you might find this interesting. I'm not sure which version of the movie you watched but according to IMDB the movie that played in theaters scores a 5.5. The version on video, the unrated version, scores a 8.6. It is also listed on IMDB with the subtitle Megan Fox is Hot. The other thing is a year after this movie came out a TV show called Lost Girl started. The main character is Bo a bisexual succubus. The show has both the terrifying and comedic tones to it. Influence of the movie seems likely.

Have you seen Lisa Frankenstein? It's in the same vain as Jennifer's Body. It would be interesting to get your take on it.

I watched this movie with my then boyfriend (his idea) in maybe 2011. He hated it, I loved it! And in Transformers 1 & 2 I hated how they kept showing her running in slow-motion in low-cut tops.

Oddly she really isn't eating men who are bad to her. Jennifer obviously never kills the band who murdered her. The Jock guy was shallow sure, but the emo kid wasn't bad to her really. Awkward in a high school way and certainly eager to get into her pants but not a total dick about it. And Needy's boyfriend didn't seem bad to her at all. Especially given how much of a third wheel he was between Jennifer and Needy. So she mainly killed pretty decent guys. I'm not sure if there's a message in that.

"This is why you don't let your friends leave in vans" Yes, because I totally expect my friends to become virgin sacrifices in rituals to Satan if I don't look out for them. I find it funny because you specifically mentioned before this, we misjudge decisions because we tend to forget that the characters don't know they're in a horror film. Granted getting into vans with strangers is still a very very bad idea for many other reasons, but the one that comes to your mind when watching a horror movie is the least likely in real life. And to a large extent, I think this goes beyond just horror. I've noticed this in several genres. For example people judge relationship decisions in dramas or romcoms. Or become suspicious of characters we wouldn't normally be in mysteries. Its funny how knowing the genre influences perspective.

If you get in a stranger's van in real life, it is very likely you're getting raped and/or murdered. You're saying it's a very bad idea, but you shouldn't stop your friends from getting in? Do you hate your friends?

Excellent reaction. Could you explain Dutch angle?
@movienightwithjacqui
@movienightwithjacqui Жыл бұрын
Thank you! And the Dutch angle is when the camera tilts sideways, so it’s no longer level, or parallel to the floor. It causes everything to look off balance, and makes the audience feel disoriented. Like when Collin first walks into the room with Jennifer, he’s confused, so the camera tilts to help the audience share that feeling.

I totally agree with you on her role in the transformers movies. But if it wasn't for how they "objectified" her she wouldn't have been put on the map as an actress the way she had. Either way those movies weren't about the humans, who are pretty forgettable over all in them. Its really about the bots.
