It was much clearer even on live 480i TV signals. It is just that VHS always looked like this even top of the line ones were still different to high quality film and projectors at movies. Hence why they always said the disclaimer "This film has been formatted to fit this TV screen". They had to crop the shit out of them too just to fit the square screen. But also you are dealing here with the quality of the VHS used, quality of the recorder, quality of KZbin compression and many other factors such as VHS film degrading over time. DVD video was such a huge jump back in the day from VHS, we finally had digital video "adapted to analog TV screens" so it was still so much better than what you are going to see form late 70's through to early 2000's VHS recordings of live TV broadcasts. It is just the nature of the beast. Also early video uploads will look worse as well due to how much KZbin video compression and quality standards have changed over the past 16 years. Not to mention even no 480p in the early days.
