I completely agree with the staircase remodel. We recently pulled our carpet, painted the wood underneath with white porch paint, put on a beautiful runner, and painted the railing black. It changed the whole look of my house when you come in. Now you don’t see dirty carpet, you just see the beautiful staircase! Thanks for the reminder to be grateful and enjoy your home and the people you’re with.

FYI, adding wallpaper sounds innocuous, and it does indeed bring beauty to a space. But it is incredibly expensive, so unlike many of these other great items that Jennifer mentions, wallpaper takes an expensive purchase to look expensive.

Love your ideas. But, I do not find all staircase updates to be a success. I do not like a metal Bannister. Ripping out wood for metal seems silly when you can paint for a update instead. As realtor I find some buyers hate certain metal railing designs. The glass designs for staircases was a huge fail for most buyers. Too fragile with kids and pets and too easy to get dirty.
@JenniferDecorates Жыл бұрын
You have a great thought about that as well! Some people really like the look of a more modern feel, and choose metal. For me... I am always going to grab a paint brush! :)
@MGCMG980 Жыл бұрын
I think it depends, where you live (climate zone, warm or cold) and what kind of home you have and what kind of staircase. We have very open, airy house with marble floors in almost all the areas and marble staircase with very minimalistic metal bannister, and it is perfect harmony fir us. No maintenance, no painting, no anything. And it doesnt collect dust. We are pool family, it is water in house all the time.

My way to hide cords is to screw a tiny cup hook on the back of a cabinet and trail the loose cord up a back leg... over to the hook and down to the outlet.
@allisonscott1009 Жыл бұрын
I use tiny command hooks so I don’t put holes in furniture but its the same idea. The clear ones also disappear along baseboards if you need to run a cord to the outlet and want to keep it tamed.

I think you should have discussed furniture. The put it together yourself, pressed board furniture seen so often these days looks so cheap. Solid wood furniture is more expensive but you will own it forever, and it will be passed down to your heirs. I have antique furniture from my husbands grandmother that she got as a wedding gift in 1905. I also have a small cherry side table that has been in my family since before the revolutionary war.

Thank you, Jennifer! I have a design problem and would love your thoughts. I recently bought a house with mini-split units in some rooms. They have all been installed above the windows and are an eye sore, but they are relatively new and expensive, so removing them is not an option. Picture an entire wall of beautiful windows with a large rectangular box from the top of the window to the ceiling, and they stick out about 10". Have you ever encountered this issue?
@JenniferDecorates Жыл бұрын
No, I haven't but I can sure understand how that is all your eye would see! And, if you tried to cover them with window treatments, it would create the unit to not run as efficiently. That is a design dilemma for sure! I'm sorry!

I have a mahogany Georgian desk so the underpart of the desk is open and it's not possible to therefore use the back of the desk to hide computer and printer cables. I tried using a plastic cable box organizer that a purchased on-line but it wasn't effective. So eventually I designed and got someone to make me a box which has cut outs in four places: 1. In the front and is the size of the back of my computer which neatly fits into the cut out. 2. On the top where the wires from the computer and printer are fed into the box and then eventually to either the electric adaptor or the back of computer. As the box is almost as high as the underpart of the desk the wires feeding into the box are not visible 3. The one side of the box where the wire from the adaptor / extension cord comes out and plugs into the wall. 4. There is no back to the box which fits against the wall. The result is that a few cables are visible on the top of the desk (like any other computer), with the only other visible cable being the extension cord coming from the box and plugging into the wall. Total cost was equivalent to about $25
