How Ateliers Teach How To Paint

Do academic painters ever add black to their skin tones? I ask because I've noticed many academic artists tend to paint flesh tones that look rather gray when compared to painters such as Rubens, Boucher, and other old masters.

My atelier used Ivory Black. I would never add it in the light areas of the skin tones though I definitely used it in the shadows. We had a rule that white never went in the shadows and black never went into the lights… though for some instances that rule got broken.

any thoughts on watercolor? Do arteliers teach the medium?

My atelier did not teach watercolor and I am not an expert in it. Though I feel as though the same would be true as to know your tools as much as possible.
