My brother did as well, and when he was in recovery I sent him this song and he dug it. He was nine months clean and decided to do heroin one more time…and it killed him 😢

I saw Rilo Kiley back in 2003 I think opening for Ozma in Grand Rapids. Saw her on the tonight show. Also watched The Wizard religiously as a kid. None of this matters. I think this is her best song. What a hook! I have no idea what happened for you to hit this creative growth Jenny, but I hope it continues.

It's all subjective but because she sings about addiction in First Person, even when narrating her father's song, one can reasonably infer that personal experience is driving the lyrics. I'm not saying you are wrong but her mom's youth was spent with music royalty of the very highest calibre before she died aged 70yrs old. I admit to being a tad dismayed by previous comments that missed the darkly bleak point of the song. ... in fact I'm probably jealous. How lovely it would be to see cutesy unicorns dancing on rainbows in the dark and macabre.
