This takes me back to dressing up as an angel for our village nativity reenactment and singing Oíche Chúin during midnight mass in Ireland many years ago. Brings tears to my eyes... so grateful for power of music

I have never heard this version of the song until just now. Alex does a beautifully marvelous rendering of the song. In the US it is Christmas in July time so this is a great tone setter. Just wonderful!

@jasioui There has been no greater blessing in my life than my religion. The real victims are children who are raised without morals and well-functioning families and without the knowledge that they are blessed children of God.

Is she singing in gaelic?
@Lizfan26 жыл бұрын
Yes.
@ScarlettCrystal20099 жыл бұрын
What language is she singing in?
@michealobanaghan42209 жыл бұрын
+ScarlettCrystal2009 I'm surprised that nobody has replied. Irish Gaeilic. Oíche chiúin is literally 'Silent Night' (well, strictly, night silent but that's how the word order works).
@ScarlettCrystal20099 жыл бұрын
+Micheál Ó Banaghan Oh ok. Thanks. It had been so long since I had asked, I had forgotten about this video and that I even asked anything about this. Since watching this video, I've tried learning some Gaeilic through an app/website that I was told about. Still have a hard time with grammatical stuff. Why is it "night silent" (if you literally translate it) as opposed to "Silent Night" as it is in English?
@michealobanaghan42209 жыл бұрын
+ScarlettCrystal2009 Adjectives follow nouns - oíche is night, ciúin is silent, but because oíche is feminine you get lenition of the c so it becomes chiúin. Duolingo is probably the place to go to learn a cúpla focal (few words). Don't get hung up on the grammar or you will never learn anything and actual real live speakers are pretty inconsistent compared to book grammar.
@ScarlettCrystal20099 жыл бұрын
Micheál Ó Banaghan Actually, Duolingo is where I go. It's just when it comes to actual grammar, other than a limited vocab, I don't even have a good general grammar thing going at the moment (still very much at the beginning stages). How are live speakers inconsistent?
@michealobanaghan42209 жыл бұрын
+ScarlettCrystal2009 We are getting into thread drift here. But book-Irish is a made-up language that nobody speaks, it's a compromise between all the dialects. For example, in English you are supposed to say 'He and I went' but in day to day speech you are more likely to hear 'me and him'. It's book-wrong but street-right (at least in some way). Unless you plan to be an author, you can usefully defer a lot of the tortuous grammar rules while you are learning, because when you speak you will be understood anyhow. Copy what you hear and practise!

poor kids. victems of religion. why do we do this to the innocent
@sd.whoiammakesadifference19407 жыл бұрын
jasioui just because you don't believe in a God, what gives you the right to decide what other people should or shouldn't believe? I believe everyone everywhere should be allowed to believe and worship (or not) according to the dictates of their conscience (or worship as they choose). This includes Jews, Muslims, Catholics, Buddhist, Hindu, Protestants, Latter-Day Saints (Mormons), Baptists, Jehovah Witness (and other Christian denominations), Agnostic, and Atheists and anyone else. No one has a right to tell someone that what they believe is wrong, just like no one has a right to control others or decide how someone else feels or thinks about something.
