Artist and writer Jenny Odell brings her acutely insightful observations to the dominant framework of time, based on industrial and colonial worldviews, that is embedded within our societies. Addressing the inability to reconcile the artificially constructed time pressures of modern culture with planetary-scale crisis, she offers a series of histories, concepts, and places as "provocations that can defamiliarize an old language of time, while pointing in the direction of something else."
Odell's newest book is "Saving Time: Discovering a Life Beyond the Clock" (March 02023) and her first book is the widely-read "How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy" (02019). Her visual work has been widely exhibited, and she's been artist in residence at Recology SF (the dump), the San Francisco Planning Department, the Internet Archive, and the Montalvo Arts Center. Previously, Odell taught digital art at Stanford University.

Odells have always been associated with time and timing. Col John Odell during the revolution, Hiram Odell tutored JD Rockefeller, David Odell wrote the Dark Crystal. My last name is Odell and I have been studying time, full time for nearly 2 decades. I find it neither illusory nor something that can be escaped. It is the flavors of the wave forms, that permeate all things. The oldest science humanity has records for, and the records are stunningly accurate. When we start to follow the right calendar, the world will change into something unrecognizable to most people alive today. Periodicity is the smallest primordial building block of organized matter. All matter and all the activity of it, is influenced by the flavored waves. The periodic table, the amino acids, come alive when paired with their known sequential positions in the calendars of ancient days. We need to teach the 20 days.

Please respect the use of other people’s time. The useful content of this video starts 19 minutes into the video. As of March 2023 about 2400 people have viewed this. Multiplied, that is 45,600 person-minutes. In hours that is 760 person-hours. Given an 8-hour working day, then the amount of person-days waisted by the intro to this video is 95 person-days. That is a very luxuriant and unkind waist of other people’s time. It’s all the more disappointing given the subject of this lecture.

I like to think of this as a good opportunity to consider the valuing of time, as is O'dell's point here. Equating it with working hours seems the antithesis of the message. The non-speaking 18 minutes at the start was really valuable, I thought.
