I'm an early Long Now member, so I'm very much an advocate for the organization. But the sound recording for this event is awful for the first few minutes. Though the sound recording gets better, it is never really great and remains distracting - which is unfortunate, given the novel and sometimes complex ideas being presented. Also... While I look forward to attending the opening of the revamped Interval Café, Andrew Warner's promotional presentation is rather uninspiring. His tone of voice is way too flat and uninflected, as if he were reading a business report. I'm sure he is an interesting person with interesting ideas, but Long Now needs a better promotional spokesperson. And I'm okay saying this, because I'm aware of my own public-speaking deficiencies. Nevertheless, I still found some of these Ignite talks interesting. Being an Earth and space oriented futurist since early childhood - I'm 74 and now actually living in the future - I think it's important to maintain and nurture optimism (balanced with realism, of course). To me, reading about and attending Long Now events is often like opening a window in a stuffy room and feeling fresh air coming in. In these unsettling times it's a great source of ideas and inspiration.
