@@JenPhelps Yep. As I recall, from the 70s to the 90s, procedures of various kinds were more for models, actors, and actresses - people who made a living with their faces. The exception might be braces although given how expensive they were (and are), I'd guess they were mostly for correcting bite issues. I think the wedge in the crack was breast implants which became more of a thing for normal people in the 90s.

Did you know 'plastic surgery' has been around for centuries, and the first 'plastic surgeons' were butchers. As punishment, people had Noses and ears cut off, it was the butchers who sewed it back on (if family grabbed it) or reshaped some more skin to give them a nose or ear... but the biggest advance was in WW2, when men were horribly burned but survived in fighter planes. I don't mind false eyelashes that look close to natural, especially if it is just a few individual ones added to the outer corners -- that usually looks good. Second on my list would be contouring and highlighting the nose, with the bright white glowy powder on the tip, so it looks like the tin man's nose in the Wizard of Oz.

I did the natural look when it wasn't in and will keep doing so when it isn't. I'll do a dramatic look when I feel like it, in a style I'm comfy with. Just embrace yourself and what you love most. It's freeing and really helps you feel your best. Eff all those trends. It might be a bit harder to find the type of products you need when trends change (as I had to shop in Korea before that was normal because I couldn't find enough cream and liquid products that looked much better on me), but as you have a large collection, you'll not have to worry about that. At least not for a long while 😉. Enjoy your maximal look as long as you want 😘.

This video really helped me. You vocalized so many feelings I also have. I can’t wear the lashes either. I tried extensions and took them off in two days. I need to wash my eyes. Fake eyelashes are too heavy for me too. Many women around me have huge lashes and it detracts from their beauty in my opinion. We are all being sold things and I’ve been influenced to buy things too many times that didn’t add up to the hype. It’s one of the reasons I love your channel. I just read about the problems with filler and how it doesn’t dissolve - it migrates. We learn to love our aging faces while doing our best with skincare and makeup if it’s enjoyable I feel you give an honest opinion and I appreciate that.

I feel this. I wish the whole fake eyelashes with everything would go away. It’s like, you spent so much time building such a detailed eye look, only to slap on a strip of huge, obviously fake, eyelashes and lose all the details you just did behind your lashes.

If people make hurtful comments just to be hurtful, can't you block them? I've been thinking about trends and aging and stuff lately. I'm old enough to be your mother. Let's just get that out of the way, I'm old. What I hate to see happening is that videos are made to "help" us conform, not to inform us. I set my own trends. Sometimes I'm demure, or playful or dramatic. Sometimes I really don't care or want to put on makeup. So that's how I do it. Eyeshadow is for old ladies? Great! Watch me wear it and love it! Why should the kids tell the adults what looks good? They don't have the right to. They haven't gained enough maturity to know what actually looks good. Our youth driven society has lost respect of others and worships young, androgynous perfection. This is a sad version of reality. You ARE beautiful! You are gentle and sensitive and caring. Your face reflects that. I often think/comment about your beauty. It's those minor things that make us special among all the rest of the world. They aren't flaws. They are "beauty marks"! Thanks for being real and informative. Love your channel.
@20thcenturyrelic4 ай бұрын
The "eye shadow is for old ladies" thing is a way for the younger people to differentiate themselves from us. (I'm 62.) Just like we had our things back in the day. It's a trend and will pass. The difference is, there will be documentation of their rebellion. Yes, there was of ours, but embarrassing old photos can have "accidents" or be lost. 😉 The Internet is forever! I think that, as younger girls and women move into the workforce, they'll want a more sophisticated look and will go back to eye shadow.
@rondawiebe15054 ай бұрын
@20thcenturyrelic I agree that this is what is happening often and you're right that every generation does it in some way. I just don't like it that women are feeling pushed to look younger all their adult lives. I want the kids to look up to the elders and aspire to be more mature and poised. We "old ladies" are beautiful and have so much to offer to the young-uns. We have learned what works for us and I vote for everyone appreciating the age they are. As an artist, my taste has changed and mellowed. I'm still very different from other women but I'm not trying to prove anything by using a certain look, or trying to look younger. I worked hard to get here and I'm content. I hope others can join me.

Jen, you ARE beautiful! I too thought I was ugly when I was growing up, I wanted to change my nose, among other things. Sometime when I hit my 20s I realized that my nose actually fit my face very well, and I wouldn't change it for anything. As for this whole 'eyeshadow is dead' thing, I'm in my 60s now and spent most of my life wearing one eyeshadow color which I applied with a sponge tip applicator. Then in my 40's I discovered luxury eyeshadow. I still only got a couple more colors. When KZbin came out I learned from influencers how to actually apply eyeshadow, and frankly I don't give a damn if eyeshadow is 'dead'. I'm wearing whatever I feel like wearing. I have a lot of time to make up for. I do think that a lot of luxury eyeshadows are for beginners. I look at Chanel, Dior, or YSL, among many other luxury brands and realize how those eyeshadows just don't deliver very much range or dept. (generally speaking). I see influencers who specialize in luxury makeup who buy every release and the resulting look is always the same with only very slight differences. Because the colors aren't very deep or pigmented they are practically foolproof. Chanel is the biggest culprit for that. It's as though they just don't want to commit to color. I think the packaging is beautiful, but I'm just done with those colors. Now we have the Natasha Denona's and ABH, ColourPop, and all the indie brands which are so much more interesting. Even their neutral colors are more interesting. Another thing is that I am very pale so it really isn't a good look for me to not wear makeup. I look like I've lived underground most of my life without some contrast on my face.

There's also the one - not sure of the title - where they're trying to do surgery on a woman to make her look like everybody else. She has bandages over her face until the end, and they don't show what everybody looks like. In the end, they take off the bandages and tell her the surgery failed. And they show everybody else. By our standards, she's beautiful, and they're all ugly. She ends up going to a sanctuary for people who look like her.

I suffered 2.5 years with braces and many years with a retainer. I still remember the mouth wounds and the line-shaped sores from rubber bands and aching with each tightening. Never again. People don’t know how lucky they are to have these medical advancements. I have to agree with the lip filler and overdrawing. I have med-sized lips so I’ve never needed filler, but the drive to have donut-lips led me to think people think they don’t have nice lips without them. No matter what size, there’s nothing wrong with your lips. And yes, all hail the drugstore. I completely faded some bad sun damage with products from the ordinary and Timeless.

I chuckle when people have been talking about using bronzer where you would naturally catch the sun, as if it's a new trend and not how we always used to apply bronzer before it got confused with contouring. I don't contour now. It's designed for stage and tv makeup or if you wear heavy foundation that can make your face look very flat. It's too much for my everyday life.

Hi Jen - I have just become a subscriber bc I think you have a very thoughtful channel. Even your eyeshadow declutter videos were so impressive as you knew so much about each palette! The 3 areas that I agree with you the most on trends that get on your nerves are false eyelashes; everyone looking alike and influencers that push the same products, esp anti aging products.
