Jim Hall's solos on Sonny Stitt's classic "Stitt Plays Bird" are amazing, especially "Hootie Blues" and "Parker's Mood". Highly recommend.

Miles Davis solo on autumn leaves is so beautiful, can you one day discuss that, the changes are hardly noticeable

It's funny-when I heard the first two bars of your "bad" example @ 00:45, I thought, "That's not that bad; it's like call and response, using similar rhythmic values but inverting the melodic shape." And then you got to call & response as tip #3. I think this just goes to show that you have good improvisational technique so wired into your playing that it's hard for you to come up with something actually bad at this point! -Tom

Brilliant lesson, esp. (for me, still a rudimentary improviser) the pentatonic trick. Thanks, Jens! -Tom

Hi Jens, can you talk a little about body posture with guitar to avoid painful neck and shoulders and better playing in a future video?
@JensLarsen22 сағат бұрын
I am not sure I am the right one to do that, I have been incredibly lucky with having very little issues like that so I don't that much about it, sorry.

Sometimes when we work out stuff on guitar we can get a little stressed. It happens subconsciously. I've done it heaps. We lean forward a bit without realising it and lean 'right over' the guitar. Our head weighs about one tenth of our total body weight. Leaning over can sometimes result in neck / shoulder pain and tension headaches. It's a bit of a loop. The more stressed we get, the more tense we become. Try to sit / stand up straight. There are more things you can do but I won't mention them here - as it may not be appropriate to do so. Best to just keep it simple. Relax and sit up straight. Good luck. 😁

@@kevindonnelly761 My bassist friend studied in Denmark and said they did a lot of Alexander technique for correcting tension and posture to free up arms etc. I'll look into that, thanks for the input.

@@warrennelson5190 You're welcome. I've heard about Alexander Technique (many years ago). It might be good but it's a fair amount of work. It costs a bit of money and takes a bit of time too. I'd probably start with simple and free stuff first, and see how you go with that. As you practice scales, arpeggios, diads, triads etc, check your posture. Try to feel what you are playing in your hands (i.e. developing 'muscle memory'). It's ok to look but occasionally close your eyes and see if you can play some stuff by feel too. That might help the 'leaning over' business. Magnesium (if I'm allowed to say it) helps nerves 'talk to' muscles. That might help the tension. It's good for everything - especially the brain.

Go with the classical posture

Another masterful lesson! I’ll get into this with a cup of coffee tomorrow. Question: Do you have any videos/info about your preproduction, production, and postproduction of videos? Your journey and insights would be interesting. I’m currently struggling more with making thumbnails than I am with altered scales. 😂 Thanks, Jens!

Is there a way to play altered dominant chords on guitar like you can on piano? I'm trying to figure out a way to play F/Eb7 which is very easy on piano but on guitar it's impossible (no omitted notes either)
@JensLarsenКүн бұрын
F/Eb7 is not an altered chord, and you can play that but it is a bit tricky

I feel like if we're talking rhythmically the first two bars in the first example weren't too bad but what do I know lol

Always use a strap!! Use a foot block (classical guitar) and relax. Why so many online instructors, as good as they are, don't wear a strap. Bad habit.

@Jens Larsen do you have any suggestion how you would master guitar... special strumming guitar double track inside Dolby Atmos... there are not much examples out there how to mix and master 3D Dolby Atmos Double Track guitars. I am not a guitar player just a hobby sound Designer.
