Oral Hairy Leukoplakia is a unique lesion of the tongue caused by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). It often occurs in the setting of HIV/AIDS. Despite the name "leukoplakia" it is not a form of dysplasia or precursor of squamous cell carcinoma. Watch the video to learn more. Thank you for the video! To me, OHL on low power looks like an ice cream sandwich where the balloon cell band looks like vanilla ice cream. It's not diagnostic, but it reminds me to check the nuclear features on high power.

I've had this most of my life :/ was tested and confirmed, I don't have HIV either btw. Does this mean I dont have a good immune system? because you said its rarely seen in healthy people :/

May I ask what kind of photograph this is? Like is this a piece of the tongue skin under the microscope or something else? The reason I ask is I have had 2 years of ongoing oral issues ( mainly related to my tongue feeling fuzzy and dry all the time)no doctor can figure it out but if they could have a look like this then maybe they would find out

Yes he absolutely was! All of the videos where I mention Ed at the start were videos we made during his fellowship year with me. I am thankful to Ed for helping me get my channel going. He kept pulling slides for me so I kept teaching and making videos! That really helped my channel grow which led to me actively making videos on a regular basis today.

I had risky intercourse two months ago, after that about a month after intercourse I realized that there was a vertical white plaque on the edge of my tongue, is that hairy leykoplakia?? is it possible for hairy leukoplakia to appear that quickly?? for the record, I just had a very risky relationship

@@JMGardnerMD but I also found the same folds on my sister's tongue, the difference is that on my sister's tongue, there are faint white plaques

If there is hairy leukoplakia it means hiv positive???

Not necessarily. But it often arises in patients with HIV/AIDS or other Immunosuppressed state so further workup to exclude those things is probably a good idea in patients who have oral hairy leukoplakia.

I have white tongue, nazel drops didnt work , i also been on 4 lots of different antibiotics and still the same im coughing up mucus, feel like top of nose is blooked and im drained to hell ?
