The Kilner Company was taken to court in 1871 over the coal smoke coming from their Thornhill Lees chimneys and the judge ordered that "no man has the right to interfere with the supply of pure air". The company was forced to close down to convert to gas furnaces and struggled along for 66 years despite 3,000 people losing their jobs.

It’s not the environmentalist Jeremy. It’s the Earl and his over sized back garden!! Doubt he was that bothered about his trees as much as the wealth someone was making... I expect there was a degree of corruption going on there, job losses and poverty in 1800’s should have been a bigger factor and financial support from the Earl to buy what was necessary might have been much kinder 🙄

There are plenty of judges who support environmentalism. As Clarkson points out, very few consider the economic impact of their legal decisions. Their livelihoods are never at risk because there is always another court case. No matter who “wins” the judgement, the judges and lawyers always get paid. Meanwhile, the company may relocate or go bankrupt, the employees may lose their jobs, and the economy loses revenue (including the taxes that paid for those impressive buildings). Don’t be so quick to sing their praises.

As an Australian who often enough here's about the layest stuff the Japanese are doing..... it's ABSOLUTELY UNBELIEVABLE how many SO CALLED American firsts are literally COPIED FROM THE Japanese or the germans. Some American takes a trip overseas and MAGICALLY INVENTS some so called American first...... just like abbott laboratories and the 15 minute caronavirus test. That korea was using on their people FOUR MONTHS BEFORE America suddenly decided they "made a break thru test". It was being used on the south korean public IN JANUARY. Even here in Australia we got it 2 weeks before the USA.

Except that Jeremy, as usual, misses the real point. It had nothing to do with environmentalism and everything to do with cronyism. Had the roles been reversed and his Lordship had owned the factory while his family had owned a few bits of shrubbery that were being killed by the smoke, which way does he think that the case would have gone?

I imagine that could apply to 90% of the industries of the Victorian age in Britain when later standards are applied! If it was not environmental concerns it would have been child labour, and general working conditions, all quite legal back then!

I like Jeremy but he does talk some nonsense . If you're factory is destroying the environment then it should change its ways or shut down . It was in the middle of an industrial boom so the workers had a chance of re employment and for the owners it's a reality of capitalist adventure .
@_lambert_1785
@_lambert_1785 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah the workers had other places to work but that factory was supplying most of the jobs for the town and they would of had to move which wasn't so easy. The effect of working people and the economy should have equal consideration as the environment.

When you're at the level of just about creating acid rain..... there was a steel smelter in the Soviet Union and it was impossible to grow roses there because of the acidity of the air. I think the glass factory was at about that level if the crops couldn't grow.
