A "Make Your Fiddle Swing Minute"-Vibrato
In late summer of 2021 Jeremy Cohen and Dix Bruce made almost 20 short videos illustrating aspects of Jeremy's recent book and play-along audio set "Make Your Fiddle Swing!" This video discusses the use of vibrato, a mainstay of "classical" technique, in swing and jazz and how you can adapt this technique and make it sound swingy. Jeremy demonstrates his suggestions on a song from the book "Clouds and Shadows" (Dix Bruce) which uses chord changes similar to Django Reinhardt's "Nuages."
Other videos in this series, which we'll post in the coming weeks, will explore different aspects of learning to improvise on swing and jazz standards, all of which are covered in the book "Make Your Fiddle Swing!" Jeremy talks about moving melodies and improvisations around the fingerboard by octaves, issues with vibrato, finger pressure, tension, bowing, moving from classical to jazz, using chord arpeggios in improvising, tangoes, and much more. Most of the videos are around five minutes or shorter.
While these videos and the book they illustrate are aimed primarily at violinists the concepts discussed can be informative to any instrumentalist interested in approaching swing, jazz, and improvising. "Make Your Fiddle Swing!," along with Jeremy's other play-along set "Swing Jazz Violin with Hot-Club Rhythm," is available from Musixnow.com:
