I met Bob along with David Cross at a book signing once, years ago when their biggest claim to fame was still “Mr. Show.” Still, I was starstruck and couldn’t bring myself to say anything to either of them. Bob graciously introduced himself and reached out to shake my hand, whereas David literally rolled his eyes at me and made it clearly plain that he wanted me to leave ASAP (to be fair, I was near the end of a line hundreds of people and I think David was just done with the whole thing at that point)

If it makes you feel better, I was a massive Mr. Show fan and got drunk at a David Cross show where he did a bunch of bits about having a kid. I loudly complained about it a bar, only to find out he arrived shortly after and his wife was there.

this and the surprise inspection segment illustrate very well why Seth is prob the greatest amongst the contemporary late night hosts. Its a kind of meta humor without drifting into the absurd a la Ferguson or Letterman. It is light and fun and easy, with references heavily the shared history and inside stories of writing rooms, the people actually writing the jokes (and how a few people who went on to become stars infront of the camera got their start in the writing rooms). It feels like such an antidote to the pompous showbiz attitude of most of the other late night shows, that feels incredibly old-fashioned now. I prefer to watch shows for fun that succeed in transmitting to me the feeling that the people working there are having fun working there, be it by taking the piss out of each other once in a while. But also the show of solidarity and consideration for the peoples labour-rights and struggles.

I love the 'competition' kids books at the end, but my absolute favorite book growing up was the Butter Side Battle book by Dr. Seuss and it is a THINLY veiled cold war analogy that ends with both sides of a completely ridiculous war staring down mutually assured destruction.
