Maria Stepanova is a poet and writer living in Russia. Her recent book In Memory of Memory won Russia’s main literary prize.

What happens in Europe is always of planetary significance. Germany fulfills half of its energy needs from Russian petroleum product. What was - and is - happening in Darfur remains on page 5. It's in a part of the world we know little about and don't care about. I'm NOT saying our hair shouldn't be on fire regarding these disgusting Russian atrocities. I'm just saying it's selective.
