Jeremy Paxman talks about the centenary of WW1 and responds about his interview with Russell Brand. This was on The Graham Norton Show, BBC1 01/11/13. I do not own this content.

The original interview with Russell Brand and Paxman was such a thorough roasting that I had to take a break half way through
@glennwalker50364 жыл бұрын
So many comments about how Russell Brand converted Paxman but there was nothing that Paxman said during his interview with Russell that suggested he didn't already have the view that the public was disenchanted with politicians. The points of contention during the interview were that Paxman kept asking Russell why his opinion on political matters should hold any weight when Russell did not vote and that it was not okay for Russell to criticise politicians for not providing solutions and then not provide any solutions himself. Russell handled himself brilliantly but there was no indication Paxman went through a social metamorphosis due to the impact of Russell's words.
@orangeturtle87303 жыл бұрын
Paxman had an awakening thanks to his ancestry and Russell, as soon as Russell uttered “of course I care it’s where I come from it’s real to me” that was the moment that broke Paxman into aligning with his real consciousness. Paxman’s alright ❤️

Nah, he's a knobhead he came to my workplace and was an utter nuisance. Self-important mentality and detached from reality. Also the BBC are very lucky I had enough self control that one of their producers got out of there without a scratch on them whoever that gobshite was. So no, he's not "alright", by all accounts he is an insufferable personality, extremely awkward to work with and thinks the world of himself. Oh, and he needed to be shown how to use a water cooler. Failed. Got someone else to do it for him.

I think people didn't really understand Paxman's criticism of Russell Brand. His criticism is that Brand doesn't have a feasible alternative solution. Brand says the whole thing is a sham and people shouldn't vote but can't propose a better solution to meet the people's needs. Brand is great at speaking to a sentiment but not much good at anything else. It's easy to be a critic, the hard part is creating solutions which the people are willing to get behind.

on the voting cards there needs to be a box which gives the option.. " non of these" . and these votes should count.
@lj71692 жыл бұрын
There is that option, you cross out the card and write 'void' - the card is then actually counted and recognised as a non-vote.
@simonkevnorris2 жыл бұрын
In Australia voting is compulsory (if you are on the electoral roll). The votes are usually on the weekend and postal voting has been available for 30 or more years. It's fairly easy to void the vote.
@seanscanlon9067 Жыл бұрын
Just write anything you like on your ballot paper other than actually voting for a candidate and it will be counted as a spoilt vote. Then when they announce the result and 'spoilt votes' is higher than it would normally be compared to if people just did not bother to vote, it will stand out more.
@funkyfranx Жыл бұрын

People require qualifications for pretty much all higher salary bracket jobs. And usually one has to be a member of a guild or institute (CIMA, ACCA ICAEW for accountants, RIBA for architects etc). There should definitely be a professional qualification, and possibly a licence, in order for someone to become a politician. That would weed out the likes of Therese Coffey and Liz Truss.

People aren't dumb. They are aware that they are affected by their environment. If you ask an Eskimo.. You can have anything, what do you want? He isn't going to say "A Nice Brand Spanking New Stainless Steel Fridge Freezer please" is he? He is confined to his environment. But we have the skills, the resources, & the technology to CONTROL our environment. We can build a better world. One without Money, Politics, Poverty or War if ONLY we work together by first admitting "I don't know", & then looking into solutions on a practical, Scientific, Engineering direction. That is not a belief. That is information. To take part in this project, look up *"The Choice is Ours"* documentary to introduce you to an alternative to destroying ourselves in nuclear war, which the odds currently favour. Only you can change that.

It's hilarious to read so many comments fawning over Russell Brand, who isn't even in this clip, in light of his long overdue downfall as I write this almost ten years later. I never liked him and remain baffled by his popularity even as it gratifyingly wanes. He didn't "get through" to Jeremy Paxman, their interview and the reaction to it merely involved Paxman voicing opinions he likely held long before he'd ever heard of him. Back in 2013, Brand wasn't some savant making strong new arguments, he was just a savvy self-promoter using the political apathy of the time coupled with his facility with language, charm and wit to boost his career. As Paxman points out, he never articulated any solutions to the issues of the day. Talking about not voting and in doing so tacitly encouraging others to follow his example was only ever going to make things worse. Why? Because Tories are never apathetic about politics. They're never complacent about getting into power and remaining in power. Today the Labour Party are even more useless, but voting for them is the obvious first step to turning things around and fixing the mess that consecutive Conservative governments have left the UK in.

And then you get harassment telephone calls with people who speak to you like you are a complete moron criminal. We are the only EU country that forces people to pay for a tv licence. Yes it's nice to have a film not interrupted by millions of ads all the way through, but now we have really good recording devices where you can just skip through them, or pause and go and make a beverage. If they keep paying people silly money and fail to make good tv I will start refusing to pay. Plus so much is missing these days. BBC news... Shows very little footage and some guy sits in a chair and tells you what to think whilst using dubbing instead of subtitles. Then the rest of the channel focuses on crap to buy, like gadgets and fashion. And when are they going to show the films made in 2010 like 'The Whistleblower' Starring Vanessa Redgrave and Rachel Weiss based on actual events leading up to 9/11. Or 'Fair Game' about what happened to Valerie Plame CIA operative when she questioned the legality of the dossier that led to the war in Iraq. Fat cat tv is all it is.

The thing that irks me most about Russell Brand is that he's clearly done absolutely no research into any of the things he bangs on about. He criticises what he doesn't understand, which for someone who is commenting on politics is completely unforgivable. You don't see journalists (proper ones, not those who work for rags like the sun) writing pieces based purely on their own interpretation, they use facts and reasoning before drawing conclusions.
