Rifkin has helped me understand our humanity better and I am deepy grateful for this. My worry is the focus on Western Civilisation as the centre of the empathetic movement. He mentions other civilisations only in passing. When talking of extending empathy, he talks of women getting the vote, then empathy to people of colour, then to those of different sexual orientations, etc. The centre of the discourse seems to be the white, Western male. Please correct me if I have misunderstood.

western civ is not just the potential centre for the empathy movement: it has for some time been the center of so much cultural change, probably a result of the colonial age. the west is the de facto leader, and I think just might lead in a better direction (rifkin a great example) than for instance the chinese, however great they are at organizing.

As for #2 cause of global warning - beef etc. - they do say eating habits are the last thing people will give up? Well it does amaze me how people are so stuck in their eating habits that nation leaders dare not suggest that beef consumption should be significantly reduced. Then again, many deny global warming as a serious threat to begin with so why would they bother reducing meat intake. *sigh*

A huge amount has changed since then and as you point out a lot of big things like the COVID-19 pandemic and Brexit (none of which I am glad about)...the world is going through a lot just now...perhaps this is the time for a shift in how we as humans have been living and mistreating the planet?? I have hope that humanity will be better - if not then this human civilisation may be wiped out (as Jeremy says...just like many civilisations that have gone before us). Time will tell...

Empathy is not rooted in mortality. It is our natural social tendency that is responsible. It has nothing to do with death or fear. We desire happiness, security, and fulfillment. Thus when we see others struggling we feel empathy for them because we wish others to have what we desire as well.

In southern california, solar panels on roofs don't pay back for 15 years, & the solar cells lose efficiency over time. Also, if not regularly cleaned, efficiency drops further. But note that a roof of solar cells will not completely power the typical home. Only the sun belt states in the USA have this limited potential. It is not thought that solar cell efficiency will rise much based on limits of silicon. We must be sober about current alternative energy sources.

Yet more on the importance of knowing some stuff: few need a supercomputer. the internet is too slow relative to local processor-to-memory transfer. cloud computing applications only make sense if they offer such amazing features that one could not afford to buy the software. And cloud applications charge for use - where is that money coming from, except via some use of energy resources. So it is probably wise to own the software and use it locally, and turn off the puter when not using it.

The drop in efficiency of solar cells, need for cleaning, & expensive battery change (varies according to system size) after 10 years makes solar rather lackluster. I plan to install solar on on my home, but my point is simply that it's no panacea, and barely more than a snack.

I don't think it's fair to assume that across the globe people will only support an idea passively or tacitly. I mean, Jeremy Rifkin advises the EU, which often acts on his advice. How is that passive? Even if everyone everywhere was committed to inaction, how does that lead to the breakdown of civilization? What would the common man do otherwise apart from live out his life as he has previously?

I think it's more the point that we acknowledge that we can be empathetic toward one another, and use that to our combined advantage, rather than rely on the simple premise, however asserted, that because we are empathetic creatures we automatically coexist for mutual benefit. More on the importance of knowing some stuff: while it is probably true that many humans eat too much beef, free range cattle convert photosynthesis to edible protein on land not good for water intensive agriculture, so in that way beef is very good use of solar energy. Also, grazing cattle need little human effort, freeing the human to do other agriculture or work of another kind. Lets not through out the baby with the bathwater.

@rh001YT I held a brokers license. I was a registered FA. 10 to 12 % is near historical average growth stocks simply put. In order to aim for that return, you would build a portfolio that would be considered high risk meaning you will have to have the discipline to ride out the boom/bust cycles. If you take the average over the past 15 years of the top 100 growth mutual funds, you won't come close to that return.

@rh001YT Solar paying back in 15 years is a 4.6% return on investment. That is a return that bond funds would kill for. Savings accounts, money market funds, and the like are all well below that return. That is also saying the price of fossil fuels(current electricity source) never increase in price, and inflation isn't accounted for. That greatly increases the return of 4.6% over time. You are stating a very narrow minded argument.

The stench can be eliminated by careful attention to hard facts, such as in science, understanding how math connects (usually) with science, studying history, and then noting what causes what, not just in the simple physical realm but also in the complex human realm, and if you would do such difficult study (not likely) then you would see that empathy counts for very little.

It helps to know some facts rather than take Rifkins word on certain matters. For instance, by 3000 BC Hindus, mostly tribals at that time, had postulated that all people are brothers and sisters & share a common soul, the atman. empathy was part of their worldview, including empathy with animals, which they mostly stopped eating. That did not help much, as the history of india clearly shows - lots of war and very limited prosperity.

things may not be as bad as Rifkin thinks they are. China has greatly slowed population increase, as have Caucasians everywhere. Reforestation can sink excess atmospheric carbon. led lighting is going to be a game changer. Americans can cut 20% of gas use by elminating option car trips, like to the restaurant or special store on the other side of the city. But global empathy? People spend the same on a pet instead of on a child in a poor country, when many charities are set up to facilitate.

Not popular in the land of his birth, India, the Buddhist teachings did travel east very quickly for the time, without the invention of the printing press.
