As a fitting monument to speed, Jeremy decides to create a shrine in his garden. He thinks a Lightning Supersonic Jet Fighter - the fastest jet ever flown by the RAF - would be the ultimate mark of respect. His wife, on the other hand, has other ideas! Great clip from the series 'Speed', presented by Jeremy Clarkson. Go to / topgear to see a full list of all high quality videos available on the Top Gear KZbin channel and don't forget to visit www.topgear.com for all the latest news and car reviews.

+bbqroast Unfortunately, they would be unfit for flight. An aircraft Can't sit around for 20 years without servicing and still meet FAA regulations. Checks would need to be done yearly, and the maintenance costs on an old plane like that could easily run into £2000000 per year. Not to mention renting a hangar at your local airfield may cost £2000 per month, or more. Then there's the fuel. For a couple of hour's flight you've probably spent another £10000ish on avgas, increased maintenance costs, and spent more money (£2000 PER DAY!) renting a hangar at your destination. I would rather have the new Audi R8 V10 and a castle in the south of France lol.
@PDZ1122
@PDZ1122 8 жыл бұрын
+Adam Pardoe As far as FAA regulations go, these would be classed "Experimental - Exhibition" and the usual regulations don't apply. Your neck to risk. What airfield do you know that charges 2000 pounds a month?? 200 more likely. Jets don't run on Avgas, they run JetA or plain old kerosene. Sure, with full afterburner a Lighting will burn a gallon a second, but you don't buy a jet fighter of you can't stand the fuel cost. Where do you get the figure for 2,000,000 a year for maintenance?? You're not a pilot or aircraft owner, are you? If an Audi can give you 1/1,00000 the pleasure an aeroplane can, go for it.

XM172 first flew on 10th October 1960 and was delivered to 56 Squadron at RAF Wattisham in December. When 56 formed a Lightning display team named 'The Firebirds', XM172 was one of the team aircraft. In February 1965 the aircraft left Wattisham for RAF Coltishall and joined 226 OCU (65/145 Squadrons) until October 1973 when she was delivered to RAF Leconfield for disposal. Her last flight was in June 1974, to Coltishall in preparation for static display on the gate, wearing 145 Squadron marks initially but later changed to 226 OCU's own markings. In 1989 she was put up for disposal as the dreaded 'one gate guard' policy was put into force. Thankfully Wensley Haydon Baillie bought her, and asked that she remain on the gate at Coltishall. When he became bankrupt in 1998, XM172 was once again put up for disposal and in 1999 Barry Parkhouse bought her and had her removed from the gate and transported to his facility at Booker. On removal from Coltishall she was damaged in several places, faded, and had the tail and outer wings cut off. XM172 spent a brief period in Jeremy Clarkson's garden for his TV show 'Speed', but didn't stay there no matter what you might have been led to believe! She also showed up in the static park at the 2000 SBAC display at Farnborough, but soon returned to Booker. A plan to display her on a roundabout in Farnborough came to nothing, and she was placed in imminent danger of being scrapped because British Airways (owners of Booker) wanted the aircraft removed from the site. Anyway, thankfully Neil Airey stepped in and bought her, moving her to a new home at Spark Bridge in Cumbria. This was made a needlessly urgent and hurried task by the airfield owners wanting her off site by the end of April 2006 or she would be scrapped! Thankfully the task was completed in time and she now sits resplendent in Neil's back garden - viewable by appointment. She's in good hands, that's for sure. Copied from Thunder-and-Lightnings.co.uk

Well done Jeremy. Bravo to you. I found a Klingon D7 Battle Cruiser in perfect condition in a remote salvage yard, and I could get it for practically nothing. A minor problem would be relocating power poles in the back yard, and cutting down the tree line seventy five feet behind the house. All of that is a matter of municipal paperwork. Since it has a salvage title, the disruptor cannons were removed, but due to a loophole, the forward photon torpedo launch system remains in place and can easily be made functional. What killed the deal is the unavailability of dilithium crystals and a small amount of anti-matter to get the warp engines started to pilot it to my house under impulse power. A surplus jet fighter in the back yard is out of the question, albeit much easier to aquire. With all the nooks, holes, and recesses, the militarized red wasps at my house would turn it into a giant nest.

These things were EXTREMELY fast...and could outclimb almost anything else..One even managed to intercept an American U2 spyplane at 88,000 feet (where the US pilots thought they were safe from interception).. it also frequently came out on top in various 'war games' against other allied war planes of the day. Concorde was offered as a 'target' for NATO fighters including F14s..F15s...F16s..Mirages and F104s...but only the Lightning could catch (and overtake ) it.

+celt67 the u2 was at 60,000 feet and nothing could reach it and they had a huge shock when they realized a lightning had hit 88,000 feet and DIVED down onto it!
@fredlougee2807
@fredlougee2807 4 жыл бұрын
@@eatthisvr6 That was flying a parabolic trajectory. It took advantage of the Lightning's ability to supercruise, that is go faster than sound without using the afterburner. The procedure was to refuel in flight and then climb to about 20,000 ft.-ish, put the plane into a shallow dive and go as fast as it could without afterburner, and then pull almost vertical on command from ground control. At this point the pilot would light the afterburner, and from there it would be about like a free throw in basketball. Well, except the rim is moving, but basically the same thing.

@@eatthisvr6 I actually read about the maneuver with a different plane, a Mirage, in a novel by South African adventure writer Wilbur Smith. In "Eagle in the Sky", published in the mid-1970s, Smith took some liberties with aircraft performance, to have a scene wherein the main protagonist, a South African of English and Jewish heritage who had emigrated to Israel after five years as a fighter pilot in the S.A.A.F. and acquired a commission in the I.A.F., shoots down a high altitude spy plane, ostensibly an Ilyushin knock-of of the U-2. In the years since reading the book I have never learned of the Russians actually having any such plane, and do know for a fact that during that time period they used the MiG-25 for high-speed tactical reconnaissance.

I wonder how many conversations that began with.... 'Hello darling!' resulted in marriage counseling? I survived one such conversation which began in this very line when I purchased a ME109 G propeller hub for an undisclosed sum and tried to explain it could, at the very least, be used as a large plant pot!? (with the 20mm cannon hole as a water drainage outlet I added!) Didn't go down well - at all. But marriage survived it. Although she did make me plant some Geraniums in it just to piss me off. Looked ridiculous although it did work rather well as a plant pot.
